They are available ininch series coarse and fineand metric series, coarseand fine. Inch series ScrewLock inserts are dyed red foridentification.sion formed screw thread coilsworked into a diamond shape.The resultant surface finish isa mirror-like 8-16 micro inches.This wire is then wound into aspiral coil which when installedinto Heli-Coil tapped holes, provides permanent conventional60º internal screw threads.This assembled insert accommodates any standard bolt orscrew (MIL-S-7742) and MIL-S8879 (UNJ controlled radiusroot) male threaded members.(See page 8 for material availability.)Heli-Coil inserts are larger indiameter before installationthan the tapped hole. Duringinstallation the inserting toolapplies torque to the tang reducing the diameter of theleading coil permitting it to enter the tapped thread. The uniquedesign features of the insert offermany benefits Stronger Assemblies.Tapped threads are strengthened because the inherentflexibility of the insert providesa more balanced distribution ofdynamic and static loadsthroughout the length of threadengagement. This flexibility alsocompensates for variation inlead and angle error allowingeach coil to carry its share of theload. No Thread Wear.Thread life is dramaticallyincreased even after repeatedassembly and disassembly,because the insert hardnessand surface finish practicallyeliminate erosion of thethread form due to friction. Corrosion Resistance.Under normal environmentalconditions, Heli-Coil insertsminimize galvanic actionwithin the threaded assemblybecause of their superior corrosion resistance. Design Flexibility.Bolt tensile strength can bebalanced against parent material shear strength, assuringbolt failure rather than parentmaterial damage. Five insertlengths are available in eachthread size.locking, swaging or keying inplace — the outward spring-likeaction of the insert holds it inplace. Minimize Space & WeightHeli-Coil inserts allow use ofsmaller bosses, flanges andfasteners than any other insert.Heli-Coil inserts can generallybe incorporated in existingdesigns, where no provisionhas been made for an insert,without increasing boss size. Heli-Coil screw locking thread insertsLOCKING FEATURES & BENEFITS Heli-Coil offers three types oflocking inserts for multiple applications Screw-Lock Inserts: Positive self-locking torque,complying with NASM 8846,MA1565 and MIL-N-25027. A resilient locking mechanism(applies to Heli-Coil screw-lockinserts) that grips the bolt andprevents it from looseningunder vibration or impact. Repeated assembly and disassembly without appreciableloss of self-locking torque. Savings in space, weight andmoney, through the elimination of lock wiring, lock nuts,lock washers, chemical compounds, plastic pellets/patchesand other locking mechanisms.Hi-Torque Inserts: Similar to Screw-Lock excepthigher prevailing torque compensates for reduced friction inhighly lubricated applications. Ideal for higher vibrationapplications. Approximate 40% increase inprevailing torque levels. Whenthe bolt enters the “grip” coil, these chordal segments flexoutward, creating pressure on the bolt.
