Learn about the many places it can be used offcampus as well.Student Health Services – Learn about the wide range of clinical care available to WCU’s students through the on-campusHealth Center.TODAY’STERMINOLOGYLike most schools, WCU has its own lingo. Some of these terms you may alreadyknow, some you may not. Here’s a list of terms you’re likely to hear today andwhat they mean.Academic TermsCurricular – Activities students participate in that are directly related to theircoursework and academic curriculum.Detailed information about WCU’s academic curriculum can be found in theUndergraduate Course Catalog.Enrollment Portal – Overseen by theRegistrar’s Office, the enrollment portal isa series of online surveys and placementtests students complete in myWCU. Academic departments use this informationto build each new first-year student’s fallclass schedule. Students are not scheduled for classes until they complete theirenrollment portal.First-Year Experience (FYE) – A generaleducation course that all new first-yearstudents are required to complete intheir first semester at WCU. This courseprovides students with the skills andknowledge to grow and thrive at WCU.FYE courses are dynamic and engagingbecause they are developed by teamsof faculty from across the University.Students learn about core academicconcepts and skills as well as about disciplinary trends and research.Student Success Coordinators – Eachacademic college has dedicated StudentSuccess Coordinators who provide students with accurate information abouttheir program and help them navigateWCU’s resources so they can makewell-informed decisions about theireducation.Student Success Coaches – Any student who needs one-on-one supportwith skills including time management,test prep, study habits, stress reduction,note taking, self-care, goal setting, andmore are encouraged to sign up fora Student Success Coach at any timeduring their academic career. SuccessCoaches provide individualized supportto guide students toward academicand personal success at WCU. Studentscan meet with a Success Coach weekly,bi-weekly, or monthly, or they can meetfor a specific need.

Housing TermsAffiliated Housing – University StudentHousing LLC (USH) owns and operatesAllegheny, Brandywine, Commonwealthand University Halls, as well as TheVillage and East Village apartments onSouth Campus. These are collectivelyknown as affiliated housing. First-yearstudents are only eligible to live inAllegheny, Brandywine and Commonwealth Halls.WCU-owned Housing – West ChesterUniversity owns and operates Goshen,Killinger, Schmidt and Tyson Halls. WCUalso operates the College Arms Apartments on North Campus and the SouthCampus Apartment complex. WCUowned housing is sometimes referredto as traditional housing. First-yearstudents are eligible to live in Goshen,Killinger, Schmidt and Tyson Halls.Desk Assistant (DA) – DAs are undergraduate student staff members whowork at the front desks of the variousresidence halls.Resident Assistant (RA) – RAs are undergraduate student staff members whoplay a vital role in facilitating an atmosphere of community on their specificfloor, wing, or apartment building.Residence Hall – WCU uses the termresidence hall in place of the term dorm ordormitory. The term residence hall is preferred because a student’s hall is not just aplace to sleep. It also provides opportunities for personal and educational growth.Other TermsCo-Curricular – Activities beyond a student’s normal coursework or academiccurriculum that contribute to their learning outside the classroom. Examplesinclude athletics, community service,Greek Life, student clubs and organizations, and student government.FERPA – The Family Educational Rightsand Privacy Act of 1974 which governsthe privacy and confidentiality of students’ education records.First-Generation College Student(First-Gen) – West Chester considers astudent First-Gen if none of their parents or guardians completed a bachelor’s degree. WCU celebratesthese students and their successes,while providing specific resources tohelp these students and their familiesnavigate college.First-Year Student – New studentsentering their first year of college.WCU uses this term in place of “freshman” as part of our commitment togender equity.Title IX – This is a portion of the Educational Amendments of 1972 thatprohibits discrimination based onsex. “No person in the United Statesshall, on the basis of sex, be excludedfrom participation in, be denied thebenefits of, or be subjected to discrimination under any education programor activity receiving Federal financialassistance.” The Title IX Coordinator isdedicated to ensuring equity on thecampus of West Chester University.Technology TermsLegacy – A legacy student is someonewith a parent, sibling, grandparent and/or guardian who is a West Chester University alum.D2L – The learning management system(LMS) used at WCU for course materials,assignments, syllabi, grades, etc.New Student – Any student startingWCU for the first time, including firstyears, transfer students, and adultlearner students.myWCU – Where students access bills,view holds on their account, scheduleclasses, and view final grades, GPA, andunofficial transcripts.Orientation Leader (OL) – Thesestudent leaders will guide you andyour new Ram through the orientationexperience. OLs acclimate students andguests to the WCU campus communityand offer new students supportthroughout the summer andwelcome week.Navigate – Launching in the fall, Navigate is a student success platform thatallows students to schedule advisingappointments, view their class schedule,find campus resources, and more in oneconvenient app.Ram Card – Students’ official WCU IDcard used to access residence halls,meal plans, printing, library services,and more.Public Safety – WCU has its own policedepartment that oversees primary lawenforcement jurisdiction on all areas ofcampus. Public Safety at WCU includesPolice Services, Security Services, Parking Services, Electronic Security, RiskManagement and Emergency Services.Ram Plan – The Ram Plan is a co-curricular transcript that mirrors students’academic transcript. In place of trackingcoursework and grades, the Ram Plantranscript documents students’ co-curricular learning and can be used forvolunteer, job, internship and graduateschool searches.RamConnect – WCU’s online studentinvolvement center and student organization management platform wherestudents can check out upcomingevents, sign up for leadership programs,explore student clubs and organizations,and more. RamConnect is a student’sone-stop shop for getting connectedwith campus life.WCU Alert – Free service that sendsdirect text messages with WCU announcements including on-campusemergencies, inclement weather cancellations, delayed openings, and Universityclosings. Students can add parents/guardians to their WCU Alert account.WCU email – WCU’s primary means ofcommunicating with students. Studentsshould check their WCU email daily.Family and Guest Orientation 7
