2008-09 Shasta College CatalogPage 5The CollegeA Brief HistoryIn the Centennial year of California and Shasta County (1950), ShastaCollege opened its first campus. As part of the state’s Centennialcelebration, President Harry S. Truman spoke at the college’sThompson Field. There were 26 original faculty members.Shasta College extends its educational, cultural, and recreationalfacilities and services to all people in Shasta, Tehama, and TrinityCounties, including parts of Lassen, Modoc, and HumboldtCounties, an area that is more than 10,000 square miles, which islarger than the State of Massachusetts. An eight-member Board ofTrustees, which includes a non-voting Student Trustee, representsthe Shasta-Tehama-Trinity Joint Community College District.Shasta College was founded in 1948 as part of the Shasta Union HighSchool District. The Shasta College campus was originally a fur andtrading center of the Wintu Indians, later owned by a soldier and hisfamily after the Mexican-American War. After opening its doors onEureka Way in the fall of 1950, with 256 day students, Shasta Collegegrew so rapidly that, in 1964, voters approved a bond issue forconstruction of a 337-acre campus at the main campus location. Astate-of-the-art 1.5 million Early Childhood Education child carecenter and instructional facility opened in the fall of 2005. A new44,000 square foot Health Sciences and University Center opened inthe fall of 2007, which houses the college’s Dental Hygiene andNursing Programs. It also serves as host to baccalaureate degreeprograms offered by both public and private universities.Shasta College is part of the California Community College system,which is the largest system of higher education in the world, with109 colleges organized into 72 districts and research has shownthat students who have an A.A. or A.S. degree will make anaverage yearly salary which is 50% higher than a person with lessthan a high school diploma. Also according to that Census,students who have an A.A. or A.S. degree will make an averageyearly salary which is 24% higher than a person with only a highschool diploma. The college has articulation agreements tofacilitate transfer to the University of California and California StateUniversity systems, and many private college campuses.The Shasta College mascot is the Knight. In 1955, the Shasta CollegeMotor Knights Club, built a knight with a suit of armor and lance. Hisname is “Oakey Doaks” (named for a cartoon character of the time).Because of the diversified goals and needs of its students, ShastaCollege offers a wide range of programs and services, includingcounseling, tutoring, financial aid, performing arts and athleticevents, student activities, veterans’ services, cultural events, lectureseries, workshops, and art exhibits. Shasta College has extensiveofferings on the Internet and through Interactive Television (ITV).Shasta College also offers instruction and student services at theDowntown Campus, Intermountain Campus, Tehama Campus, andTrinity Campus and each location utilizes ITV and computerassisted learning to supplement on-site courses.Fall 2000 was the 50th Anniversary of Shasta College, serving thenorth state with pride and distinction.Welcome Everyone!Motor Vehicles on CampusOperation of motor vehicles on the Shasta College campusmust be conducted in a manner which ensures the safety of thedriver, passengers, pedestrians, and/or any others, and whichprevents damage to college property. The college is notresponsible for loss of any property or damage to any propertysustained by any person parking on campus.Parking on Campus: PARKING PERMITS ARE REQUIREDTO PARK ON CAMPUS. ALL PARKING IS ON A FIRSTCOME, FIRST-SERVED BASIS. PARKING PERMITS ARESOLD WITH NO GUARANTEE OF SPACE AVAILABILITY.Parking on campus is a privilege extended by the Board ofTrustees to those who have college-related business. Drivers ofvehicles on college property shall comply with the rules andregulations of the college. Parking privileges can be withdrawnfor violations of parking and traffic regulations. Permits may be obtained at registration or from theCashier’s Office.Cost of Parking Permit: Refer to the Schedule of Classes orcall (530) 242-7911.Daily Parking Permits are available from parking permitmachines in various locations throughout the campus parking lots.These are valid for the day on which the permit is purchased.Parking permits must be displayed in plain view in theappropriate location according to Parking Regulations or acitation will be issued. There are no exceptions. Should youreceive a citation, follow the written instructions on the front ofthe citation. Restricted parking where regular permits arenot valid: 30 minute zones, staff spaces, handicapped spaces(blue) and car pool spaces.Car Pool Parking requires the purchase of a student permitand an additional permit which can be obtained withoutadditional cost through the Security Department.Enforcement: Campus parking and traffic safety regulations areenforced by Shasta College and the Redding Police Department.Security issues parking citations for violations. For Businesses, we offer one-on-one consulting servicesavailable through the Small Business Development Center(SBDC) at Shasta College. From business start-up, toexpanding your business, the SBDC is your one-stoplocation! In addition, the EWD provides custom developedBusiness and Employee Training programs to improveyour businesses’ profitability and operational efficiency.The Center for Nonprofit Resources offers grant researchfacilities, member support, and courses to enhancenonprofit operations.
