According to Stephen, the counselinghe received at CSM proved to be helpful in planninghis course load and direction. Stephen comments,“Attending Ed Seubert’s graphic design courses, inparticular, provided me with excitement for andknowledge of graphic design as well as the requiredskills it would take to excel in that field.”“The nurturing environment and diversity of courseofferings gave me confidence that I could develop skillsthat would allow me to get a good job. Also, I mademany good friends while attending CSM.”In addition to classroom learning, Stephen realized thatat CSM, he also was learning to be a good student and hisgrade point average soared well beyond that which heearned in high school. Consequently, he graduated fromCSM with highest honors, earning an associate degreein graphic design (now referred to as “digital media.”)“My accomplishments at CSM made it possible for meto transfer to San Jose State University (SJSU) to furthermy graphic design studies.” He continued his academicsuccess as a transfer student at SJSU where he earneda bachelor’s degree in design.Today Stephen is the principal and creative directorof his own graphic design company, Duuplex, whichfocuses on brand identity, web and mobile userinterface design and book design. He has given backto the profession by mentoring several graphic designinterns, from CSM and other design programs; he hasalso taught Photoshop and HTML classes in San Mateo’sAdult School program. Among his accomplishments ishaving designed over 20 illustrated coffee table books, including Photo by Sammy Davis, Jr. which was awardeda First Place Photography Book prize in the New YorkBook Show. (Photo provided by Stephen Schmidt)CSM’s Commitment to SustainabilityOver the last five years, College of San Mateo has undergone the most significant construction activity since theCollege Heights campus was completed in 1963. We arevery grateful to the voters of San Mateo County for passing two capital improvement bond measures: MeasureC in 2001 and Measure A in 2005. The proceeds fromthese bonds were used to fund our construction projects.Every construction project at CSM was built “on budgetand on time.” Furthermore, an independent financialauditor has issued an unqualified opinion for each andevery year that taxpayer-approved construction fundshave been expended. What this means is that all construction expenses incurred by our college were madein accordance with the provisions of the bond measures.Just as the financial auditor’s unqualified opinion provides independent proof regarding the fiscal integrityof our campus construction projects, the United StatesSee “Sustainability” on page 22Support CSMYour opportunity to participatecollegeofsanmateo.edu/supportcsm
