Mission and objectivesThe Mission of the School of Accounting is to provide leadership in accounting thought and practicethrough excellence and relevance in teaching, research and community engagement.Our objectives are: To provide high quality, relevant accounting education which is responsive to the challenges of aknowledge economy and the needs of key stakeholder groups; To contribute by way of internationally recognised research thus furthering knowledge andimproving practice in the accounting discipline; To encourage excellence in the accounting discipline through active participation and partneringwith government, community and the private sector debates and decision-making; To foster and sustain the curiosity, creativity, lifelong learning and development of our staff andstudents.First class researchers and teachersThe School of Accounting at UNSW Australia is internationally renowned for its innovative research. Inseveral published rankings, it is seen as the top accounting research institution in Australia and one ofthe premier Schools in the Asian Pacific region. We are also known for our high-quality teaching atboth undergraduate and graduate levels. Our staff has won international and national teaching awardsas well as Vice-Chancellor’s Teaching Awards.Cutting-edge coursesOur courses are constantly revised to meet new challenges in a globalised and social media drivenworld. Most Accounting students complete double majors or double degrees where in the case of adouble degree an accounting major being a significant portion. We encourage our students tounderstand the links between business strategy and processes, offer advanced courses in financialstatement analysis, and help them appreciate global influences on financial reporting andmanagement, including reporting on climate change and sustainability.Smart studentsUNSW Australia takes the largest number of the brightest HSC students in NSW having highest ATARin the country. Over half of the top 500 students applied for plans at UNSW Australia this year. TheSchool of Accounting has produced two Rhodes Scholars, both of whom were First Class Honoursgraduates majoring in Accounting and one of which has returned to the School and is now a professorin the school.Excellent student support and growth opportunitiesThe Peer Assistance Support Scheme enables advanced students to assist groups of first-yearstudents succeed with their studies and adjust to life at university. An important and growing activity isin the significant number of internships offered in the pen-ultimate year of study. This facilitates aneasy transition on graduation into full-time placements in the most prestigious accounting and bankingfirms. Our exchange study program also offers opportunities to study overseas at the top universitiesin the US, Europe and Asia. The Honours Alumni Network is also an important element in sustainingour professional relationships with some of our brightest graduates holding key positions in toporganisations. In 2015 we introduced an alumni mentoring program, the Career Accelerator, foraccounting students. This program is now introduced across the Business School.1

The year in review2015 has been another rewarding year with many significantachievements with all members of the School contributing yet again tomake this a successful year – Thank you to allA significant event saw the retirement of Peter Roebuck not only as Headof School but also from UNSW Australia. Peter was Head of School from2010 and was a strong supporter of all those in the school. He was amost active member of university, being elected to the Academic Boardduring this time and serving on a number of University Committees andworking groups. His last contribution to faculty was to play a significantrole in the development of the 2020 Strategy paper and to revitalise thefaculty budget process. A final recognition of Pete’s strong associationswith the Accounting Professional Bodies was made in December by CPAAustralia in awarding him the New South Wales Division Presidents Award for Excellence,(Achievement in Academia). For his service to the School he was also recognised by the Faculty inbeing given an Honorary Associate Professorship. We all wish Peter the best and thank him for hiscontributions over five years as Head of schoolWe have once again performed strongly in the most recent QS World University Rankings,Accounting and Finance was ranked 12th in the world and the highest in Australia. This is a verysignificant result, helping demonstrate that Accounting is an area of strength for UNSW Australia.The QS subject rankings are based on reputation surveys, research citations and a research impactmeasure.Another important measure of our success is demonstrated by the continued outstanding researchperformance: the Bringham Young Accounting Rankings which measures research published inquality journals over the last 6 years Auditing was ranked 1st in the world (2013 equal first), and 9thoverall, again with no other Australian institutes being represented in the top 20 institutions overallAgain it was wonderful to see staff successes in publishing in leading journals, receiving grants,completing research supervisions as well as seeing our research having a demonstrated impact ona broad range of stakeholder groups.A further highlight in research was Wei Chen receiving a Discovery Early Career Research Award(DECRA) from the Australian Research Council. These are most rare in Accounting with Wei beingthe first recipient in the Accounting discipline area.Our staff continue to demonstrate a strong commitment to improving the student learningexperience. Several of our subjects have made use of advanced education technology and haveadopted a “flipped classroom” approach, using the state of the art facility at The Place. Our studentevaluation scores continue to be exceptional, with student satisfaction rating exceeding 95% acrosssubjects. Two staff members received the Vice Chancellor’s Teaching Awards in 2015, and onestaff member received a Faculty teaching award.The School is also committed to engaging with the business communities. In 2015 the School, inpartnership with Chartered Accountants Australia and New Zealand, hosted a series of lecturesaimed at knowledge exchange with “downtown” business professionals. As in previous years, theSchool also partnered with CPA Australia to present the Bill Birkett Memorial Lecture as part of theCPA Australia Annual Congress.3

The year in reviewSelected and notable Awards and AchievementsResearch Awards and achievements Dr Kathleen Bentley was acknowledged for her service as an Outstanding Reviewer for Auditing:A Journal of Practice and TheoryDr Natalie Buckmaster received a citation for developing professional capabilities of herpostgraduate students through, ‘The Living Classroom’ which inspires by immersing students in‘real world’ accounting activities.Mr Brian Burfitt and Mr Jeff Coulton continued to play a significant role in mentoring studentsand participating in international inter-university business case competitions. For the first time aninternational business case competition was held this year at UNSW and the organising team leadby Brian and Jeff are to be congratulated.Professor Elizabeth Carson was granted the UNSW Australia Goldstar Award “Will Long-Formaudit reports improve audit quality?”Dr Demi Chung won the best conference paper in the not for profit category at AFAANZ 2015;Dr Victoria Clout won the People’s Choice Award at the Faculty’s eLearning Showcase on 3rdNovember for her presentation on “Redesigning a Large First Year Course for Active Learning”.Professor Clinton Free and Associate Professor Paul Andon were granted UNSW SilverstarAward “Looking through the fraud triangle: Insights from fraud protectors”Dr Andrew Jackson was a Conference Chair at AFAANZ 2015.Professor Baljit Sidhu was elected to the Board of AFAANZ.Scientia Professor Roger Simnett received the AFAANZ Outstanding Contribution toAccounting and Finance Research Literature AwardScientia Professor Roger Simnett, Professor Elizabeth Carson and Research Student, DaleFu, won the Best Conference Paper using SIRCA data ( 5,000) at AFAANZ 2015Scientia Professor Ken Trotman won the 2015 UNSW Business School OutstandingPostgraduate Research Supervision Award. Academic staffProfessorsElizabeth CarsonBCom (Hons)MCom (Hons)PhD UNSW (2005)FCAMandy ChengHead of SchoolBCom (Hons)MCom (Hons)PhD UNSW (2005)CPA, AMAElizabeth Carson is a Professor in financial accounting and auditing.Elizabeth teaches at postgraduate level in financial accounting andauditing, as well as supervising research students in the Honours, MPhiland PhD programs. She has received both national and faculty levelteaching awards for her teaching in the Masters of Commerce andMasters of Professional Accounting programs. Elizabeth's researchinterests include economics of global and national audit markets, industryspecialisation by auditors and audit reporting. Her PhD investigatingglobal audit firm networks and global industry specialisation by audit firmswas awarded the American Accounting Association Auditing SectionOutstanding Dissertation Award. Her work has appeared in leadingacademic journals including The Accounting Review, Auditing: A Journalof Practice and Theory and Accounting and Finance. Her researchis supported by Australian Research Council (ARC) Discovery Grants andby the International Auditing and Assurance Standards Board. Prior tojoining UNSW Australia, she worked with PricewaterhouseCoopers (PwC)and is a Fellow of the Institute of Chartered Accountants in Australia.Mandy Cheng joined the school in 1998. Prior to joining UNSW BusinessSchool, Mandy worked as an accountant with BHP. She was appointedHead, School of Accounting, in July 2015. Her research interests includestrategic performance management systems such as the balancedscorecard, capital investment decisions, incentive and compensationscheme designs, the use of accounting information in negotiations, andIntegrated Reporting. Mandy has served multiple editorial roles, includingEditor of Accounting and Finance (current), Deputy Editor of AustralianJournal of Management (current), member of the Editorial Board ofManagement Accounting Research (current), and Associate Editor ofBehavioral Research in Accounting (2011-2013). She has been a Directorof AFAANZ (Accounting and Finance Association of Australia and NewZealand) from 2011 to 2015, and is currently the Selection CommitteeChair of CIMA Australasian Centre of Excellence, and the Chair of theAdvisory Board of AFAANZ Management Accounting Special interestGroup. Mandy regularly presents at international and national accountingconferences, and has publications in leading accounting A* journals(ABDC ranked) including The Accounting Review, Accounting,Organizations and Society, Management Accounting Research, andAuditing: A Journal of Practice and Theory. Her successful external grantsinclude ARC Discovery and Linkage grants. She is one of the coorganisers of the Global Management Accounting Research Symposium an annual conference hosted by UNSW Australia, Michigan StateUniversity and Copenhagen Business School. Academic staffProfessorsClinton FreeBCom (Hons) UNSWLLB UNSWPhD (Rhodes Scholar)Oxford (2005)Gary MonroeBS Northern MichiganUniv.PhD Massachusetts(1978)6Clinton Free is a Professor who holds a doctorate from Oxford Universitywhere he was a Rhodes Scholar and Commerce and Law degrees fromUNSW Australia. He is currently the Director of the Full-Time MBAprogram at the AGSM. Dr Free teaches and researches in the areas ofmanagement accounting, fraud and corporate governance. He wasrecently awarded a Future Fellowship from the Australian ResearchCouncil to investigate a range of issues related to fraud and corruption.He is also currently conducting research into fraud and white-collar crimeas well as management control systems. Dr Free has published widely ininternational journals including Accounting, Organizations and Society,Journal of Business Ethics and Contemporary Accounting Research. Hehas presented at, as well as organized, a variety of internationalconferences and sits on several editorial boards including ContemporaryAccounting Research, Accounting, Organizations and Society andAccounting, Auditing and Accountability Journal. Dr Free has consulted toa variety of organisations in both the private and public sectors and hasbeen involved with executive education for over a decade. His clientsinclude Merck Sonoma, Goldcorp, BMW, Canada Post, Clarity Systems,3M and Jacques Whitford. He has won several awards for teaching bothundergraduate and post-graduate courses. Prior to joining UNSWAustralia, Dr Free held academic positions at Oxford University (UK) ceWaterhouseCoopers and Allens Arthur Robinson.Gary Monroe is a Professor at the School. He is a past President of theAccounting and Finance Association of Australia and New Zealand(AFAANZ). He received a PhD in Business Administration (accountingand information systems) from the University of Massachusetts in 1978.Prior to taking up his appointment at UNSW Australia, he worked at theAustralian National University, Edith Cowan University, University ofWestern Australia, University of Hawaii, Duke University and theUniversity of Massachusetts. He has taught financial and managementaccounting, auditing, accounting information systems, behaviouralresearch in accounting and research methods at both the undergraduateand graduate levels. Professor Monroe is an internationally renownedresearcher in auditing with an emphasis on audit judgment and theeconomics of auditing, and financial reporting. He has published articlesin journals such as Auditing: A Journal of Practice and Theory, Journal ofBanking and Finance, Journal of Business Ethics, Behavioral Research inAccounting, Journal of Accounting and Public Policy, AccountingEducation, British Accounting Review, Australian Accounting Review, andAccounting and Finance. He currently serves as Editor of Accounting andFinance and is also on the editorial board of a number of journals, suchas Auditing: A Journal of Practice and Theory, Australian AccountingReview, Accounting Research Journal, Managerial Auditing Journal, andInternational Journal of Auditing. He has received several teachingawards for his undergraduate teaching and his extensive PhDsupervision. In 2013, he was made a Life Member of the Accounting andFinance Association of Australia and New Zealand in recognition of hisoutstanding contributions to the accounting academic profession inAustralia.

SidhuMCom OtagoPhD Sydney (1993)FCA, FCPA, ACA(NZ)Roger SimnettMEc MonashPhD UNSW (1992)FCPABaljit Sidhu has taught on several undergraduate and postgraduate programmesincluding AGSM MBA and Executive Programs. Her research and teaching focuseson corporate reporting, in particular the informational role of accounting data incontracting and firm valuation with a special emphasis on standard setting andpolicy issues. She has attracted significant external research funding from theAustralian Research Council (Linkage and Discovery Grants), the AustralianSecurities Exchange and from the Centre for International Finance and Regulation.Baljit is currently the Editor-in-Chief of the Australian Journal of Management andserves on the Editorial Boards of Abacus, Accounting and Finance and theAccounting Research Journal. Her own research has appeared in several A* and A(ABDC) rated journals including the Journal of Accounting Research, the Review ofAccounting Studies, Accounting and Business Research, Abacus, and severalothers. She is currently on the Board of the Accounting and Finance Association ofAustralia and New Zealand, and also serves on the Academic Advisory Panel tothe Australian Accounting Standards Board. Baljit has held appointments at severalleading universities in Australia and New Zealand and visited at Rice and StanfordUniversities, the Universities of Michigan and Rochester, the London School ofEconomics and the London Business School. Baljit has extensive industry andconsulting experience, including as Head of Facilities and Research in CorporateBanking at NatWest New Zealand. She conducts in-company training in thecorporate market with clients including NatWest Bank and DHL International, andprofessional accounting firms (KPMG and Deloitte Touche Tohmatsu). Her coursesdemonstrate how to extract performance information from financial statements,what might represent unrealised potential, and where to look for lurking dangerRoger Simnett is currently the Macquarie Group Foundation Chair, and holds ahalf time appointment as Academic Director of the Centre for Social Impact, andProfessor of Accounting at the UNSW Business School. He was previously theAssociate Dean of Research for the Australian School of Business from 2011-2014and Head of the School of Accounting from 2006-2010. Roger's research interestscover a range of international auditing/assurance issues, aimed at improvingaudit/assurance quality and making policy recommendations, and his work coversboth auditor decision-making and the economics of auditing and well as examiningcredibility-enhancing mechanisms for non-financial information. He is recognised asa leading academic in auditing and his work has appeared in the leading academicand professional journals, including The Accounting Review, Accounting,Organizations and Society, Auditing: A Journal of Practice and Theory, Abacus,Behavioral Research in Accounting and Contemporary Accounting Research. He isalso currently serving on the editorial boards of a number of journals, including themain three specialist auditing journals: Auditing: A Journal of Practice and Theory,International Journal of Auditing and Managerial Auditing Journal. Roger is heavilyinvolved in standard-setting as a member of the Australian Auditing and AssuranceStandards Board for two terms and was the first elected academic on theInternational Auditing and Assurance Standards Board from 2002-2005. He hasrecently held the appointments of Chairman of the Sustainability Expert AdvisoryPanel of the International Federation of Accountants, Co-chair of the task forceproducing an assurance standard on Carbon Emission disclosures for the IAASBand is currently a member of the International Integrated Reporting Committee’sassurance task force. Roger is a Fellow of the Academy of the Social Sciences inAustralia.7

Academic staffProfessorsKenneth TrotmanMCom (Hons)PhD UNSW (1984)FCA, FCPA8Ken Trotman is Scientia Professor and he was Head of the School ofAccounting from 1991 to 2000. He has held visiting appointments at a rangeof overseas institutions including Cornell University, the University ofMichigan and the University of Illinois at Urbana Champaign. His maincurrent research interests are concerned with auditor judgments, use ofaccounting information in decision making and sustainability reporting andassurance. Ken has published in leading international research journals forover 35 years including The Accounting Review, Journal of AccountingResearch, Contemporary Accounting Research, and Accounting,Organizations and Society. He is a Fellow of Chartered AccountantsAustralia and New Zealand and a Fellow of CPA Australia. Ken was the1993/94 President of the Accounting and Finance Association of Australiaand New Zealand (AFAANZ) and was awarded life membership of AFAANZin 2002. In 1998 he received the AFAANZ 'Outstanding Contribution to theAccounting Literature' award and was elected as a Fellow of the Academyof Social Sciences. He received the 2000/2001 'Outstanding AuditingEducator Award', the 2008 Notable Contribution to the Auditing LiteratureAward the 2009 Notable (Lifetime) Contribution Award in BehavioralAccounting Literature from the American Accounting Association and the2014 Behavioral Outstanding Doctoral Dissertation Supervisor Award. Hewas editor of Auditing: A Journal of Practice and Theory from 2008-2011.He holds an ARC Professorial Fellow Grant 2011-15. In 2011 he wasinducted into the Australian Accounting Hall of Fame.

Academic staffAssociate ProfessorsPaul Andon has curriculum development and teaching experience in arange of management accounting and introductory financial accountingcourses at both undergraduate and postgraduate levels. Paul's researchconcentrates on strategic performance measurement, the rise of newassurance services, and the commission of occupational fraud. Paul haspublished in internationally refereed journals, presented his research at arange of international conferences, and has contributed to books oncontemporary management accounting practice. Prior to joining UNSWAustralia, Paul was employed at PricewaterhouseCoopers in theirAssurance and Business Advisory Services division, specialising intechnology, communications and entertainment clients. He is also a Fellowof the Chartered Accountants Australia and New ZealandPaul AndonBCom(Hons)MCom(Hons)PhD UNSW (2009)FCAChristina BoedkerBA (Hons) LondonMetropolitanUniversity,MCom UNSW,MBA MGSMPhD UNSW (2008)Christina Boedker Born in Denmark, Christina has over 18 years ofresearch and industry experience with UK, US and Australianorganisations. She has led research projects on High PerformingWorkplaces, measuring intangible assets, accounting controls andemotionality, business strategy and innovation with organisations such asMicrosoft, the Department of Finance and Deregulation, CSC, WestpacBanking Corporation, Department of Education, Employment andWorkplace Relations, Foxtel, the Victorian Government, the BusinessCouncil of Australia, and others. For two years, Christina was the CEO ofthe Society for Knowledge Economics, a not-for-profit organisation set upby Australian businesses to advance leadership, culture and managementpractices in Australian workplaces. Her work with industry and policymakers culminated in the Workplaces of the Future Forum, hosted by thethen Deputy Prime Minister in July, 2009, for which Christina authored apaper. From 2009-2013, Christina has led a 1 million research projectwith 86 Australian organisations on High Performing Workplaces. Theresults were launched at the Prime Minister's Futures Job Forum inOctober 2011. Christina holds a 1st class (Honours) in Economics, aMaster of Commerce in Accounting, an MBA in Financial Management,and a PhD in Accounting. She did her honours thesis on economic growththeory, her master thesis on the measurement and reporting of intangibleresources, and her PhD on accounting controls and emotionality9

Academic staffAssociate ProfessorsJane BaxterBCom W’gongMCom (Hons)PhD UNSW (1995)FCPAWendy GreenBCom (Hons)MComPhDUNSW (1999)FCA10Jane Baxter rejoined the School of Accounting in 2006, having workedpreviously at the University of Sydney. Jane’s main research interestis understanding and theorizing management accounting practices inprivate sector firms and public-private partnerships. Jane has beenawarded research grants from the Australian Research Council, CharteredInstitute of Management Accountants (UK), and CPA Australia. Herresearch has been published in internationally recognised journals such asAccounting, Organizations and Society, ABACUS, Australian AccountingReview, Behavioral Research in Accounting, Critical Perspectives onAccounting, Management Accounting Research, Journal of ManagementAccounting Research, Journal of Management Studies, and QualitativeResearch in Accounting and Management. She is a recipient of theFMAC/IFAC Article of the Year for a paper published jointly in AustralianAccounting Review. Jane has edited a book for Sydney University Pressand contributed chapters to books published by Oxford University Press.She has a sustained record of course design and innovation, having helpedto establish the reputation of management accounting courses at UNSWAustralia. Jane also supervises postgraduate research students interestedin applying qualitative field research methods to the study of managementaccounting.Wendy Green is an Associate Professor who came to academia from theauditing profession where she qualified as a Chartered Accountant. Wendyteaches Auditing and Assurance Services at the undergraduate andpostgraduate levels as well as Reporting for Climate Change andSustainability at the postgraduate. In 2011 Wendy received a ViceChancellor’s Award for Teaching Excellence in recognition of her sustainedexcellence in both teaching and course development. Wendy researches inthe discipline of auditing and assurance, and her research focus to datehas been on factors affecting audit and assurance quality in both financialand non-financial assurance. Wendy's research includes work examiningthe determinants and impacts of audit qualifications in Australia and inemerging markets, auditor switching, audit committees, as well as factorsaffecting auditor judgment quality such as auditor specialisation. Morerecently, Wendy's research has focused on informing the regulation ofauditing and assurance in the areas of assurance of carbon emissions, andthe assurance of integrated reports.
