Food For Free ProgramsSchool Markets and Market in the ParkSchool Markets are free farmers’-market-style foodprograms held at public schools. Food For Freeholds 8 markets at each of four schools duringthe academic year, with additional school marketsduring the summer. These markets are open toall members of the school community and servedabout 400 families in the last year.By meeting families where they are, School Markets offer access to healthy foods while side-stepping many barriers that can prevent families fromparticipating in other food programs, like limitedtransportation, not enough time, embarrassment, and fear of deportation.Market in the Park is held at public parks and atpublic housing complexes.» School MarketsDr. Martin Luther King Jr. SchoolGraham and Parks SchoolKennedy-Longfellow SchoolPeabody School» Markets in the ParkDanehy Park808/812 Memorial DriveThis year we wanted to expand our “Market inthe Park” program to better reach Cambridgeresidents in public housing. Our friends at Homeowners Rehab Inc. (HRI) were there to help. HRImanages several of the buildings where our HomeDelivery clients live, and was already helping usmake deliveries to these clients. With a shared vision for access to healthy food, the folks at HRIstepped in to help us create a free produce market at 808/812 Memorial Drive. The program wasincredibly successful and we are looking forwardto continuing it next summer! Thank you, Homeowners Rehab!5

Food For Free ProgramsFood RescueRescuing and distributing food that would otherwise be wasted has been the heart of Food ForFree’s work since 1981. Our Food Rescue programpartners with grocery stores, farms, universitiesand other businesses to collect fresh and preparedfood that might otherwise be discarded. We get thisfood to the people who need it by partnering withemergency food programs, youth programs, andother programs that reach low-income individuals. We supplement this rescued food with fruits andvegetables purchased wholesale, much of the funding for which comes from the City of Cambridge. From July 2016 through June 2017, we distributed2.1 million pounds of food—that’s the equivalent of about 1.7 million meals. Of this, 2 millionpounds was rescued food that might otherwisehave gone to waste. This program serves more than 30,000 individualsin partnership with more than 100 food programsin Arlington, Boston, Cambridge, Chelsea, Everett,Lynn, Malden, Medford, Peabody, Somerville, andWatertown.RescuedMeat, Dairy,GroceryItems514,914Rescued Produce150,1836For Free has been a huge support in“Foodensuring the smooth running of the HarvardSquare Homeless Shelter.
