Contents2Chief AcademicOfficer’sMessage10The BSLDoctoralSchoolChief AcademicOfficer’s MessageSolving a problem: what a DBA is ultimately about! If you are wondering whether a DBA journeyis the right thing for you, you need to readwhat follows!A DBA research and dissertation is anincredible experience that enables you toestablish a bridge between two worlds: theworld of business and the world of research. How is that so?At Business School Lausanne, we considerthat every DBA research and dissertationaims to enable you to transform businesswhile advancing academic research at thesame time.In other words, the objective of everyDBA research lies within a transformativecontribution to your industry on a two-foldlevel: the level of business and the level ofacademic production through research donein the area of business administration relatedto your research topic. What is special about the problem you wantto solve?Every DBA journey should start with aproblem that you have identified in yourprofessional environment and practiceand that you want to solve. This problemcan be of any nature related to businessadministration. What makes solving this problem differentfrom a consulting practice, is that withina DBA research you will have to make anadvancement of the theory that will lead toor is caused by a transformation of businesson an operational or a strategic level.Your research will attempt to offer a solutionat the academic level of your business2problem. For example, it may be a newproblem or a problem that no one has everseen before, or the solution which exists doesnot lead to the expected results and could beimproved, or the solution is not able to solvethe problem anymore. The DBA research is also different in terms ofproblem-solving from the consulting practicebecause we do not want you just to imaginenew solutions to apply from which you thinkthat they might work to solve the problemyou have identified. We want you to validate the solutions andcollect data in the field with a scientificmethodology, regarding the proposedsolution to the problem, so that your solutionbecomes backed with academic rigor.Sometimes the problem is evident and easyto identify. Sometimes it is blurry, complexand intricate. Sometimes the problem isrestricted to one research field. Sometimesthe problem has multi-disciplinary aspects.Sometimes the problem comes from a changeof paradigm. Sometimes the problem hasbeen addressed many times already but witha non-satisfactory solution, and sometimesthe problem you think you have identifiedis not the problem you will end up solving inyour DBA journey. The two key ideas to remember are that:the starting point of every DBA journeylies within the identification of a problem, and the problem you may have identified isnot necessarily the problem you will end upsolving in your research. So why is the problem you have identified, not necessarily the problem you will end upsolving?3

Chief AcademicOfficer’s MessageBecause the second and central componentof your DBA journey is related to the level onwhich you are going to solve the problem youhave identified. This level is the level of the advancement oftheory and academic research. You will notsolve the problem you have identified from aconsulting perspective, staying at the level ofyour business or company in terms of impact. You will solve the problem on a larger scale, contributing to transforming the theory, andthus having an impact on your industry, andnot a on a specific company. The DBA research bridges the gap betweenthe academic need for advancement oftheory at the level of Doctoral studies andthe actual transformation of the businessworld. In this respect, DBA research is verydifferent from the Ph.D. research, which staysat the level of the advancement of the theoryonly, most of the time. Therefore, you will have to make sure thatyour doctoral journey digs into the existingliterature to see how the problem has beenaddressed or analyzed on an academic levelso far. What ?Exploitation ofTheoryAdvancement ofTheoryMasterPHDConsultancy(MBA)DBABusiness School Lausanne 2020And this is also where your researcher’s’ journey starts.4What can you expect to do in the course ofyour research? The difference the advancement of theorymakesOnce you have identified a gap in theory thatis related to the problem you want to solve, you can use different research methodologiesthat you will discover and learn to masterthroughout your DBA journey, to fill that gapwith a new piece of academic research. It is very important to understand thatthe results of your research are going toconstitute your findings and that thesefindings are going to be the central part ofyour thesis dissertation. This way you will, at the same time, contributeto solving a business problem and advancingtheory.A DBA journey leading to the writing of aDoctoral dissertation is not a linear processand is difficult to time precisely.Your journey starts with the first piece ofyour dissertation, the literature review, showing that you master and can challengeand question the current state of academictheory.Observationof the WorldWhat for ?DBA thesis versus Ph.D. thesisTransformationof the WorldDIFFERENTIATING FACTORSBETWEEN DIPLOMASIN THE FIELD OF ACADEMICRESEARCH FOR BUSINESSADMINISTRATIONChief AcademicOfficer’s MessageAs a Doctoral journey aims to contribute to the advancement of theory, you need to find a gapin the existing academic theory. This gap can consist of a blind spot, for example, or of partialresearch done on the business topic related to the problem you want to solve.Based on the literature review and on thegaps you have identified in the theory, youwill be able to select the methodologies(qualitative and/or quantitative) that canhelp you fill the theoretical gap and developa new solution that will be of a transformativenature for your industry.Your findings will either validate or invalidatethe solution you think should be applied tothe problem you identified when startingyour researcher’s journey. That is how you become a researcher! You donot presuppose the solution:You humbly look for the solution having astarting point in mind. You are ready to challenge your intuition andyour assumptions. You are prepared for the fact that yourfindings might contradict your beliefs on howto solve the problem.Throughout your Doctoral journey, you willbecome a game-changer in your industry, aswell as an accomplished academic.Following the literature review, the casestudy methodology most commonly usedat BSL, (as a first step to get back to thebusiness problem you want to solve), enablesyou to conduct action research in the fieldand within your industry. The findings of your first case study will thenlead you to choose a research methodologyto either confirm your findings or dig intoanother direction. The results you get from your researchand the help of your supervisor guide youconstantly towards the next steps of yourresearcher’s journey and ultimately to thesuccessful completion of your DBA thesis.Dr. Dominique BourquiChief Academic Officer &Director Doctoral School5
