In 1996, it assumedthe name of Multi-Purpose Bank Berhad. In response,the Malaysian government launched morethan RM300 billion worth of economicstimulus packages. The central bankalso introduced loan modifications andmoratoria to ease the financial burden ofMalaysians and cut overnight policy ratesto stimulate the economy.OUR FY2021 PRIORITIESManaging the Impact of COVID-19By the end of April 2021, the Bank had provided over RM5.5billion in Payment Relief Assistance packages and RM1.4 billionin extended moratoria to our customers. We simplified theapplication process for SMEs, so that they could quickly obtainBank Negara Malaysia’s Special Relief Facility. As a result, wewere able to disburse over RM600 million from this facility.We also undertook several initiatives to provide practical help toSMEs. 2021 ANNUAL REPORTPERSPECTIVES13Accelerating DigitisationWe rolled out several innovative digital applications,for example, the Alliance BizSmart mobile appand Alliance BizSmart eTrade for business owners.In addition, we introduced the digital Know YourCustomer (e-KYC) solution, which enables individualsto open and activate a savings account or obtain acredit card or personal loan conveniently anywhereand anytime via their own via mobile phone, withoutphysically visiting a branch.In December 2020, Alliance Islamic Bank Berhad, awholly-owned subsidiary of the Bank received a capitalinjection of RM200 million in new ordinary shares fromthe Bank. The Bank also successfully reissued RM1.2 billionof new Tier-2 Subordinated Medium Term Notes inOctober 2020. This was utilised to fully redeem ourexisting RM1.2 billion Tier-2 Subordinated Medium TermNotes at their earliest call dates.The Bank will continue to prioritise capital conservationto support business expansion as we navigate theCOVID-19 pandemic.SHAREHOLDER VALUE CREATIONDespite the challenges of an unprecedented operatingenvironment, we recorded improvements across keyperformance metrics. Our pre-provision operatingprofit increased by 15.3% year-on-year (“YOY”) toover RM1 billion for the first time. Our balance sheetremained healthy, and we further strengthened ourcapital levels from the preceding year.Revenue increased by 7.6% YOY to RM1.8 billion.However, the challenges of the external environmenthave compressed our net interest margin.We generated earnings per share of 23.2 sen and returnon equity at 5.9%. Our net asset value per share wasRM4.04. For FY2021, the Bank declared dividend of 5.79sen, representing a dividend payout ratio of 25%.The Bank remained vigilant in managing its creditrisks throughout FY2021. We were more selective inacquiring new clients and focused on helping ourexisting customers weather the economic challenges.OUR GOVERNANCESince the beginning of the COVID-19 pandemic, theBoard held all its meetings via video conferencing.We also increased the frequency of our meetings withSenior Management to manage the uncertainties ofthe situation.In a nod to the health and safety concerns of theshareholders, the Bank held its 38th Annual GeneralMeeting (“AGM”) on 19 August 2020 virtually. Giventhe continued uncertainties surrounding the COVID-19pandemic, we will also hold our 39th AGM scheduledon 25 August 2021 virtually.We welcomed Ms Cheryl Khor to the Board on1 June 2021. She brings with her more than 23 years ofexperience covering financial, operational and internalaudits, as well as governance, controls, sustainabilityand risk assessments across a broad range of industries.Her appointment to the Board brings us closer toachieving our gender diversity target of 30%.CONSERVATIVE CAPITAL MANAGEMENT FOR FUTUREBUSINESS EXPANSIONINTEGRATED REPORTINGThe Bank maintained a strong capital position dueto its conservative capital management. We haveone of the strongest capital levels in the industrywith Common Equity Tier-1 (“CET 1”) ratio at 16.2%,Tier-1 Capital ratio at 17.2% and total capital ratio at21.6%.As part of our commitment to good governancepractices, the Bank is taking its first step in adoptingIntegrated Reporting this year.
