It is central to a firm’s ability tocompete effectively. As global competition in both goods and services increases, a firm’s survival dependsupon how well it integrates the operations function into corporate planning and strategy. Thus, it isessential for all business managers to acquire an understanding and appreciation of operations.In this course, we will discuss commonly occurring application problems such as capacity planning,production scheduling, line balancing, inventory management, quality management, supply chainmanagement concepts, etc. The field of operations management was originally concerned withmanufacturing systems, but many of the same ideas apply to service organizations like health care,insurance, hotel management, airlines and government related operations. It is assumed that eachstudent will complete the assigned reading before the class session. This method enables thestudent to utilize the lectures to clarify difficult material.Assignments: Practice is essential in learning the material covered in this course. If you expect agood grade you must work the problems! Homework will be assigned weekly. Part of it will begraded. Iurge you to complete the assigned readings, problems, and cases promptly. Reading before andafter the lecture is necessary due to the dependence of the lectures on each other. Attendance/Participation: You are required to attend all the lectures. You are responsible for anymissed announcements or handouts due to your absence. Attendance will be taken randomly. Youare encouraged to participate by sharing your thoughts or experiences.Grading policyYour final grade will be determined from the total of the two exams, homework andattendance/participation in the following MidtermFinal Exam10%20%30%40% Midterm Exam: an eighty-minute midterm exam covering all material through the previoussession will be held as shown on the schedule further below. The exam will be closed everything(notes, materials, computer, etc.) Bring paper, pen/pencil, a calculator and Scantron paper. Final Exam: The final exam will cover the material that is taught after the midterm.
