Most robes were black to symbolize the democracy of scholarship, sincethey cover any dress or rank of social standing worn beneath. Bachelors’ gowns are cut withlong pointed sleeves; masters’ gowns feature closed slit sleeves, and doctors’ gowns arefull-cut with double-belled sleeves and bars of velvet trim. Some universities haveauthorized doctoral gowns in a single color that is representative of the institution, such asBarry University’s scarlet. The hood, originally a simple cowl attached to the gown, bears the heaviest symbolism of theacademic costume. The hood’s lining displays the colors of the university that granted thedegree. Silver, black and red in the inner lining of the hood denotes a Barry University degree. The bordering color indicates the field of learning (or faculty) in which the degree wasearned. The square cap, or mortarboard, originated in the 13th Century at the University ofParis and came to England in Tudor times. Earlier caps were round and reserved for doctoraldegree holders. This velvet cap is still worn by doctors, except those with degrees in theology.Doctoral tassels are usually gold and other degrees are represented by black, but in recentyears tassels have come to match the border of the hood to indicate the field of learning. Some of the colors you may see today are:Arts, Letters, HumanitiesBusinessEducationFine ArtsLawMusicNursingOccupational Therapy-WhiteDrabLight BlueBrownPurplePinkApricotInkPhilosophyPhysical EducationPodiatric MedicinePublic AdministrationPublic HealthScienceSocial WorkTheology-Dark BlueGreenNile GreenPeacockSalmonGolden YellowCitronScarlet
