SummaryThis program gives WU-UCR students a unique academic-year (9-month) study abroad experience atthe University of California, Riverside. WU-UCR students who have met the academic and languagerequirements may enroll in UC undergraduate credit courses, Extension credit certificate courses(offered mainly in the evenings), and/or UC Extension English as a Second Language (ESL) creditcourses, all or part of which credits may be transferred to Waseda. The UCR WU- CS-L AcademicAdvisor will help you choose your classes and guide you through the enrollment process. Enrollment inundergraduate courses is on a space available basis (some impacted classes will not be open; TheAcademic Advisor will help you select alternative classes that suit your needs).On-going Academic SupportWU-UCR students will receive appropriate information both in the field of academic and campus lifefrom UCR Extension Japan CAP Office (UCR-JPO) as well as implementation of pre-departureorientation. (UCR-JPO) will also assist with all the necessary procedures for applying for studenthousing or the homestay program. UCR has organized a series of events, orientation sessions, trips,and other activities as a part of the two week post-arrival orientation as well as during their one yearstudy program at UCR. UCR’s advisors’ team for the WU-UCR students includes an Academic Advisoras well as additional support for activities, transportation, housing, etc.The CS-L Academic Advisor on campus provides academic counseling throughout the academic yearto assist WU students in personalizing a program designed to best suit their language level and helpthem meet their academic and career goals. The Academic Advisor also coordinates all Post-arrivalOrientation sessions and stays in touch with the students throughout their stay to mentor them for allacademic needs.Student ServicesBefore WU-UCR students leave Japan, our UCR Extension Japan CAP Office (UCR-JPO) will assistyou in many ways. (UCR-JPO) will give you information about campus life at UCR help you withapplying for student housing or for UCR’s homestay program provide a pre-departure orientation.(UCR-JPO) is there to help answer your questions before you leave Japan. Once students arrive atUCR, the Academic Advisor will assist them in personalizing a program to best suit their language leveland your academic interests.The program also includes airport transfer from LAX program orientation one-on-one conversationpartners a special credit class (credit awarded by Waseda) on adapting to an American university andto American culture housing application fees student service fee housing assistance immigrationassistance up to 10 hours of tutoring per quarter as recommended or requested by the ProgramSpecial Advisor social activities and many other things to help make the year at UCR memorable.The UCR CommunityThe 1,200-acre Riverside campus of the University of California is conveniently located approximately50 miles east of Los Angeles within easy driving distance to most of the major cultural and recreationalofferings in Southern California. In addition, it is about an hour drive from the desert, the mountains,and the ocean.The city of Riverside, with the UCR campus on its eastern edge, is accessible by several mainhighways. The nearby Ontario International Airport has daily flights to most of the nation's major citiesas well as connecting commuter flights to the Los Angeles International Airport. Metrolink train serviceis available to Los Angeles.Enrollment at UCR is presently about 19,800 undergraduates and 3,100 graduate students. Thecampus continues to expand, with a number of buildings being constructed or remodeled. Theseinclude academic settings such as laboratories, libraries, and performing arts studios, as well ashousing and recreational facilities. Students will enjoy UCR’sfriendly and warm atmosphere and have many opportunities to meet and socialize with bothinternational and American students, as well as local Riverside residents. Students may use thestate-of-the-art recreation facilities and libraries on UCR campus and participate in parties, picnics,camping trips, hiking, social events, shopping trips, cultural presentations to local schools, etc. They willalso be able join student excursions to some of Southern California’s famous attractions with localstudents. Occasionally, we will also offer customized trips and transportation to local places of interests.Students living in dorms will have ample occasions to socialize with staff families and other localfamilies in Riverside through our extensive community here. Students will have weekly check-inopportunities to meet and talk with the Program Special Advisor. and learn about American culture.While this is rare, it is still a possibility.Facilitation PlanIn addition to the regular orientations for international students, students will have a special academicorientation and meet regularly with an assigned Academic Counselor. The UCR TSA advisors team willmonitor students’ progress carefully ensuring their success in the program. UCR will also providecounseling services designed to help students adapt to life in Riverside and assist them with anyproblems or concerns.Following is a list of some special academic features that we will be offering as a part of their stay here.In addition, we will be offering trips and activities customized to the students’ interest and led by theirstudent liaisons or conversation partners to make their stay more valuable and interesting.1. Clear course descriptions will be provided for each course.2. A certificate of completion will be provided at the end of their stay at UCR.3. The Academic Advisors will be available to participate in the sessions with the students to offerany clarifications or follow up.4. Student liaisons will help the WU-UCR students to connect with campus activities and life ingeneral.5. All programs will be evaluated by students and teachers.6. Students will be offered an additional long-term portfolio preparation program through WasedaUniversity (up to 20 hours of instruction over the one year period) to document theirstudy-abroad experience in an effective way for future credits and reference.Credits (36 – 48 quarter credit hours):Students are required to complete a minimum of 12 units per quarter in order to maintain F-1 visastatus. English as a Second Language courses will count toward the requirement. Students enrolledin UCR campus or Extension classes may take ESL classes as part of the 12 credits. UCRundergraduate classes and ESL classes are generally held on weekdays. Extension classes aregenerally offered in the late afternoons, evenings and on the weekends. Students wishing to begintheir program early may enroll in UCR’s three-week American Conversation and Culture Program orfour-week Intensive English Program (for an added fee). It may be possible to arrange schedulingduring the first three weeks of September.
