CDHD ProvidesServices toStudent AthletesWhen athletes in MountainHome, Boise and Meridian takethe field this fall, they’ll beable to play defense againstdisease thanks to the effortsof the Central District HealthDepartment. CDHD organizedimmunization records reviews atthe high school sports physicalsevent at Boise State UniversityJune 9th. Students from Meridian and Boise were invited tothe event. CDHD staff reviewedthe immunizations records ofthe athletes and provided Tdapand Meningococcal vaccine forthose needing it. Staff reviewedthe records of 170 athletes andprovided 107 MCV4 vaccinationsand 98 Tdap vaccinations.CDHD provided the same serviceat Mountain Home High Schoolfor the district-wide sportsphysicals event on August 11th.Eighteen students receivedMCV4 vaccinations and 11 gotthe Tdap vaccination.Based on this record of success,CDHD plans to continue beinga partner in school physicalevents.Boise Hawks andImmunizationsThe Immunization program at Central DistrictHealth teamed up with the Boise Hawks thissummer to reward kids who’ve hit a homerun with their immunizations. Through a newand innovative program, kids ages 4 – 13 whowere up-to-date on immunizations got a freeticket to one of two Hawks Immunizationnights at Memorial Stadium. Area providersand CDHD gave vouchers to the kids with allthe shots they need for school enrollment. The program was very successful, with 101vouchers being used. The summer-long campaign also included a billboard in the park. The Hawks organization also posted information on its website and made announcementsin the stadium during the games and duringradio broadcasts.Based on the success of the program thisyear, CDHD plans to be back with the boysof summer again next year.“The Boise Hawks really helped us geta message to parents about the importanceof immunizations before school starts. The team’s unique demographics areexactly the audience we hoped to reach.” Teresa Collins, CDHD Immunizations ManagerJust a ReminderCheck the brand of Hib vaccine your office uses and review the records brought in fromother providers very carefully to see what brand they’re using. The brand used determinesthe timing and number of doses of vaccine needed, based on the age of the child whenvaccine was first administered. This is especially important because the different brandsmay have the same CPT code.ACIP – Recommended Haemophilus Influenza type b (Hib)Routine Vaccine ScheduleVaccine2 Months4 Months6 Months12–15 MonthsPRP-T ActHIBDose 1Dose 2Dose 3Dose 4PRP-OMP PdevaxHIBDose 1Dose 2Dose 3Note: Hiberix brand PRP-T vaccine is approved for the last dose of Hib series among children12 months of age and older.Page 4

Booster DoseConfusionQuestions & AnswersQuestion:Question:Have you been confused withthe new recommendation fora booster dose of Meningitis/MVC-4? CDHD’s Melissa Sanders,LPN put together the followingchart which has been a big help.It is based on the age of the teenwhen they received their firstdose. Our practice has an 18 month old who hasa grandmother on chemotherapy. The childneeds MMR and Varicella vaccine. Is it okayto vaccinate the child when grandma isimmune-compromised?Our child care has several children underage 5 who have had four doses of PVC7.Does this meet the new State Law ChildCare requirement or do they still need adose of PCV13?Answer:Answer:Yes, giving the child MMR vaccine is not aproblem. Varicella can also be given, but thechild needs to be watched for a presumedvaccine-related rash outbreak 7—25 daysafter vaccination. If a rash does develop, thechild should avoid direct contact withgrandma until the rash dries up. This is alsotrue for parents and siblings. We do wantthese children protected, because havingthem expose an immune-compromisedperson to the disease would be much worse. We went to Carmela Kerns-Gupta, MPH,School and Childcare ImmunizationCoordinator at the Idaho ImmunizationProgram for answers. She states thataccording to Idaho Code (IDDAPA 16.02.11)children attending licensed childcare facilitiesin Idaho must be age-appropriatelyimmunized with all required immunizations.Furthermore, these immunizations mustbe administrated age-appropriatelyaccording to the “ACIP RecommendedSchedule.” As Pneumococcal vaccine isrequired for licensed childcare in Idaho,Children aged 14 through 59 months whohave received a completed 4-dose or otherage appropriate series of PCV7, must alsoreceive a supplemental dose of PCV13.11–12Years OldBoosterRecommended 16 years oldBornReturn1 99720131 99820141 9992 0152 000201613–15Years OldBoosters 3years fromthat dose16–18Years OldNo BoosterNeededPage 5Source: Quick Guide to CommonlyMisperceived as Contraindications toVaccination
