March 2019Meet TheInstructorAPC(AccreditedProfessionalCoach) BHSStage 4 SeniorCoach inCompleteHorsemanship,BHS Stage 5StableManager, UKCCLevel 3, Cert. Ed., EquineSports& RehabilitationMassage Therapist (ESMT)I have been riding since I was 4 atriding schools in Delph (Dr Moore’s,and at Highmoor Riding School whenolder) but never lucky enough to owna horse until I was 16 and left schooland paid for his upkeep myself! Iused to help mucking out and leadingon lessons all day at Liz Bridge’s(now Longden) at Highmoor on aSaturday in order to gain a freebareback ride whilst leading poniesdown to the fields – this is where youlearnt about horses and theirbehaviour!! I used to take a ponycalled Billy down to PC for their rallieson Armit Road, Friesland andremember crying when he bit MrsBoon’s finger when she was testingme for my D test as I thought thatwould cause me to fail!!I soon progressed to takingFirecracker (who was aptly named!)for rallies and shows and vividlyremember Ian Ratcliffe putting us allthrough our paces when trying out forjumping teams – basically if youcouldn’t jump 4ft you weren’t on theteam and there was only 1 team! Idesperately wanted to work withhorses when I left school at 16 butmy non-horsey parents wouldn’t allowit so I started a 5 year apprenticeshipas a Dental Technician (must havebeen the boxes I ticked at a careersday!) My small wage though did allowme to buy my first horse – Charlie –which on reflection was completelyunsuitable – he couldn’t canter, wasbad in traffic, hated being in a stablewould climb or jump out and he wasSPS Newsan ex trotter too!! However I fell in lovewith him and had to have him – I sold mypiano to buy him (much to my mum’shorror!) He was definitely my horse of alifetime and I quickly gained his trust andtrained him to jump - he ended up beingone of the best jumping horses aroundlocally and I could even manage to hackdown Platting Road and Oldham Road inthe end without incidence!! Sadly probablydue to his earlier trotting career hedeveloped pedal osteitis which at the timehad no cure - it broke my heart.I finished my apprenticeship at a similartime and then went to work with horses!! Igained my BHSAI whilst in Kent trainingas a working pupil at a private boardingschool and then going on to work for anadvanced event rider who had extremelyhigh standards – this is where I learnt howto truly care for horses. Not an easy life soI came back home a little sick of horsesand had various jobs such as being aDental Technician again, working forBritish Airways on reservations, and thenfor North West Auto Trader selling anddesigning advertising space to the motortrade (don’t ask me how I blagged my wayinto that job?!) At the same time as thesejobs I still did some teaching at weekendsand evenings which I loved. I was ChiefInstructor at Saddleworth around 1989 Ithink for about 4-5years when Kathy Scottand Bernie were joint DC’s and lovedinspiring the children – we had a largemembership and held rallies on Tuesday’sat Friezland and Wednesday’s atRochdale on Roch Valley Way, we had alot of team success too! I particularlyremember taking Ernie Connell teamjumping on his famous Irish pony Willy! Iwas Chief Instructor again when DotHarrison and Janice Phethean were DC’sand we were instrumental in gainingPlatting Road as our PC field when ArmitRoad was being built on. Some of the PCmembers came and did a guard of honourat my wedding in 2000 which was lovely.I then decided to bite the bullet – train formy BHSII (now rebranded as Stage 4Senior Coach) and go self-employedteaching, riding horses, basically doinganything to do with horses!! And I’ve neverlooked back! I went on to gain my BHSStable Manager and then later doing myUKCC coaching qualifications which Ithink has had the biggest impact on myteaching and then going back to collegeand summer school at HuddersfieldUniversity to gain my Cert Ed allowingme to teach Equine courses in FEColleges.I was very lucky to have the late ChrisRoberts train and inspire me, she let mehave lessons on her PSG horse Benj soI learnt all the movements such as halfpass, 1 and 2-time changes and piaffeand passage and am eternally gratefulto her, she was so generous with hertime.I’ve had various horses along the way –Fly who taught me about contact as shewas so difficult in her mouth, the madMabel who was quite bad - tempered inthe stable but wonderful to jump (askStacey!) and Rose who was just Rose! none of them straightforward but that’show you learn!! I now have a smalllivery yard on our farm and teach atcollege as well as freelance and I lovemy job! I’ve recently qualified as aSports Massage therapist which is reallyhelping horses and their owners. At pony club it’s wonderful that I nowteach the children of children I used toteach – yes I am that old!! Pony Clubhas given me great friendships and it’slovely to see new partnerships blossomand the camaraderie is the best!! Longmay it continue!!3

March 2019SAFETY TIPS - Debbie SykesWhen out and about lately I’ve seen afew near misses and been involved insome rescues so thought I wouldshare some safety tips!!TIP 1If you have an Ifor Williams trailer carrya tool like this:-!!!If you then need to take down thebreast bars quickly you can do it fromthe outside of the trailer safely!!TIP 2NEVER tie your horse or pony to ahaynet or just a tie ring – if they panicthey’ll either pull back and slip or justpull back – either way they will reallydamage the cervical vertebrae in theirneck.Tie to baler twine that has been splitthough as baler twine that’s used thesedays on large round bales or Hestonbales won’t snap as its too thick!!!!TIP 3Always carry either a knife, pair ofscissors or scalpel blades in your kit –that way if a horse or pony gets stuckand caught up in a haynet (puts a legthrough it) you can quickly cut net freeas it’s surprising how tight knots getwhen they’re pulled on and then youcan’t undo them quickly!SPS NewsMERCHANDISERachel GuarinoAt all the Indoor Rallies Iaim to set up a little Shopfor people to buy anyitems needed or placeorders for the SpecialOrder Merchandise (thatwe don’t keep in stock). Itis still helpful if you cantext me with anyrequirements so I cancheck we have the itemsand get them ready foryou as it massively speedsthings up, especially as itcan get busy at times. When the indoor ralliesend all orders need betexted or emailed to me (Ican advise about sizes, orcan exchange unwornitems if needed), I will thenmessage you back withthe price and we canarrange getting the itemsto you at the next rally/event you will be attending– I usually have at leastone child at most things! Then please bring thecorrect cash (preferably ina named envelope) orBACS the payment –stating the child’s nameand MDISE (abbreviationof merchandise) so wecan allocate the payment.Saddlecloths for TeamsMost of our teamSaddlecloths are too smallfor anything bigger than asmall pony and thenumber we have hasdwindled when peoplehave failed to hand themin after competitions so weare now going to do thingsdifferently.Everyone is going to owntheir own, but whenresearching what to buy Ifound I couldn’t pleaseeveryone as there are somany sizes, styles andtypes for all the differentsaddles out there. I havedecided that it is best ifyou buy your ownfavourite style and size, bring it in to me and I willget it embroidered for you.Saddlecloths for dressageshould be plain White thatwill be embroidered withBlack (that can also beused for Show Jumping)or alternatively for ShowJumping Black that will beembroidered in white. The cost of embroidery onboth sides is 10 in total. The only thing to bare inmind is if they are verythick he might not be ableto fit it in the machine butsometimes washing it afew times flattens itenough to fit in.Please look on the websitefor Special Order Items,we have loads of excitingstuff from Cross CountryTops to Gillets and WoolyHats!!!Coming soonA what to wear section on thewebsite for all New Members5
