I actually started doing genealogy research in1980s when my mother couldn’t answer some of myquestions about the Tices. Eventually I realized wehad missed our opportunities to question the familymembers who had already passed away. I thendragged both my mom and sister Liz into a searchof the Greeks since there were some still alive, (mymother and her sisters ). The rest is history as theysay. We often check death certificates and other deathrecords on our ancestors for dates and other information. Consider looking for cause of death aswell.I Be aware many of the medical terms used in olddocuments for various conditions are notwhat we are using today.II Some diseases and conditions do reoccur infamilies. Awareness of those diseases canbe minimized or prevent health problems.III Common disease that reoccur in families:1 High blood pressure, high cholesterol, foodallergies2 Auto immune diseases3 Certain types of cancer4 some have a known genetic componentIV ExamplesV Manage your own health1 Regular check-ups2 Exercise3 Weight management4 Take medication as prescribed. As always, our regular meetings and program areopen to the public.Upcoming ProgramsMarch 12th - Thomas Branigar "First Murder Mystery inPolk County"April 9th - Helen Wand, author "Where Eagles Nest" , ahistorical novel about immigrants to OregonMay 14th - "Using genealogy software programs, Legacyand Roots Magic", Doug Crosby and ChristopherRumbaughJune 11th - Kerry Wymatalek "A Trip to Ireland"July 9th - Fritz Juengling "German Research"Questions about Autosomal DNA?Denise Sproed, member of the Association of Professional Genealogists, will be available to answer yourquestions about Autosomal DNA testing on February25th from 5 pm to 7 pm at the Genealogy Desk atSalem Public Library.Membership DuesOur membership year is from January 1st to December 31st each year. Start with a general, broad search. Based on whatyou receive in search results, then use the searchlogic associated with the particular website searchengine to narrow your search.Starting with a name. The search engine will first look for an exact namematch, followed by common variants, misspellings, and nicknames. For example, a search for Bill Smithmight return “William Smith,” “Wm Smith,” “BillSmith,” and “B. Smith.”Filling in the blanks. When you are entering the data for your search, youmust have at least the last name. The other fieldscan be blank. You don’t have to fill in all the fields ofyour query.Be careful with abbreviations. Search engines find only exact matches. If you haveused abbreviations, retype your search string usingalternatives—for example, PA, then Penn, thenPennsylvania. Avoid abbreviations for descriptiveterms (such as Sgt., Co., Reg’t., Dr., or Jr.). Do notenter titles (like Dr., Earl, or Queen) or suffixes (3rd,III, or Jr.). Just search for the name without the titleand then check the results for the ones you want.Use of quotation marks ” “. Quotation marks are used in searches to denote thatyou are specifically looking for these words in thisorder. For example, you are looking for John Lee inFlorida, then in your query you would enter John LeeFlorida. Chances are, you would receive all the Johnsin Lee County, Florida. By using quotations, you areable to make the search more targeted and avoid alot of unwanted search results. The query now becomes “John Lee” Florida. The search will includeresults that include both John Lee and Florida. By using quotation marks, you tell the search enginethat you want the words surrounded in quotationsto be in exactly the order you have them.
