WEEKLY REFLECTIONS FROM OUR PASTORDear Friends.December 21, 2014“Don’t miss the message,” seems to be the telecommunication warning of our day. Homesare jam- packed with devices to ensure that even the most trivial message gets through. Homeshave multiple telephone lines, message recorders, call waiting, call forwarding, cell phones, smartphones, internet, email, fax machines, pagers and various other devices for making sure nothingis missed. It makes you wonder what messages are suddenly and routinely so important thateveryone is so afraid of missing them.God’s messages are the ones that are really important. In this week’s readings God sends a message to ususing four different delivery systems to make sure we get it. In 2 Samuel 7, God sends the message through hisprophet Nathan to David. The message was an important promise that God would establish an everlastingkingdom, not just a temporary, man-made kingdom, and that he would do it through a descendent of KingDavid. This promise was critically important because this descendent would also usher in the means of apersonal relationship with the Father based on loving forgiveness.Years later, God sends another message through a different means, by the angel Gabriel. In this instance itis not delivered to a king but to a lowly maiden, Mary. God’s message to Mary is that she was especially chosento bear this promised descendent of David, who is coming to establish God’s kingdom. In this message she isgiven additional insight that this descendent of David was to be the Son of the Most High, the Son of God. Whata message! Thankfully, we don’t have to miss it for God recorded it on the pages of his eternal sacred Scripture. As Mary received the angel’s message she then became a unique message bearer herself. For Mary did notsimply deliver this message from God, as did Nathan the prophet, or Gabriel the angel, instead she deliveredboth the final message and the final messenger, as it says in Hebrews, “In the past God spoke to our forefathersthrough the prophets at many times and in various ways, but in these last days he has spoken to us by hisSon, whom he appointed heir of all things, and through whom he made the universe.” (Hebrews 11:1,2) Jesusis both the final, most thoroughly revealing message of God’s love, and the quintessential messenger. AndMary, full of grace, delivered both God’s Message and God’s final Messenger, her son and our Savior, Jesus.“And if after the announcement of the heavenly messenger the Virgin of Nazareth is called ‘blessed amongwomen’ (cf. Lk. 1:42) it is because of that blessing with which ‘God the Father’ has filled us ‘in the heavenlyplaces’ in Christ. It is a spiritual blessing which is meant for all people and which bears in itself fullness anduniversality (‘every blessing’) At the same time, it is a blessingGod’s Plan for GivingWeek of Dec. 14, 2014poured out through Jesus Christ upon human history until the end:upon all people.” (Mother of the Redeemer, Pope Paul VI). 11,475.00God went to a lot of trouble in the days before telecommunication Stewardship Income Last WeekOnlineGivingLastWeek: 255.00to insure that we didn’t miss the Christmas message; sending it throughFlowers: 387.00a prophet, an angel, a lowly maiden, and finally an only Son. The Pope’s CornerJOHN PAUL IIHomily Given to theUniversity Studentsof Rome,(Tuesday, 11 December 2001)Scripture Reflection for TodayMary said, Yes!How does Mary respond to the word of God deliveredby the angel Gabriel? She knows she is hearingsomething beyond human capability. It will surelytake a miracle which surpasses all that God has donepreviously. Her question, "how shall this be, since Ihave no husband" is not prompted by doubt orskepticism, but by wonderment! She is a true hearerof the Word and she immediately responds with faithand trust. Mary's prompt response of "yes" to thedivine message is a model of faith for all believers.Mary believed God's promises even when theyseemed impossible. She was full of grace because shetrusted that what God said was true and would befulfilled. She was willing and eager to do God's will, even if it seemed difficult or costly. Mary is the“mother of God” because God becomes incarnatewhen he takes on flesh in her womb. Jesus, whom theFather sent from heaven, is true God and true man.St. John of Kanty,December 23John Cantius was born in the year1397 in the Polish town of Kanty(whence his surname). One day, after robbers had deprived him ofall his effects, they asked himwhether he had anything more. The saint said no, but hardly hadthey gone when he remembered having sewn somegold pieces inside his clothing; immediately hefollowed and overtook them. The robbers, astonished at the man's sense of truthfulness, refused to accept the money and returned to him thestolen luggage. To guard himself and his household from evil gossiphe wrote upon the wall of his room (after theexample of St. Augustine): "Guard against causingtrouble and slandering others, for it is difficult toright the evil done." His love of neighbor was mostedifying. Often he gave away his own clothing andshoes; then, not to appear barefoot, he lowered hiscassock so as to have it drag along the ground.Sensing that his death was near at hand, hedistributed whatever he still had to the poor anddied peacefully in the Lord at an advanced age.Year of Consecrated LifeWhat is the difference between secular (diocesan)priests and religious (consecrated) priests?AnswerSecular—or better, diocesan—priests are priests whoare ordained for a particular diocese and who serveordinarily in parishes. This is their main work, although some are engaged in other ministries aswell. At their ordination as deacons they incardinate(affiliate) with a particular diocese or archdiocese. At this time they make a promise to obey theirbishop and, in the Western Church, to remaincelibate.Religious (consecrated) priests are not necessarilymore spiritual than diocesan priests. The wordrefers in this case to the form of life these priestslive. All men and women who make public vows in areligious order are called religious. It means that bytheir vows of poverty, celibate chastity, andobedience, their lives are oriented in a special way tothe virtue of religion so that all they do becomes acontinual act of the worship of God.MINISTRIES AND SACRAMENTSDo not keep quiet aboutChrist's truth: cry it out loudly!Let me repeat once again, especially to you: "Do not beafraid!". "Put out into the deep", and go tomeet Jesus confidently, since in him you will be freeand safe, even when the paths of life become steepand threatening. Trust in him, young universitystudents from various European nations. Welcominghim means that you open to him the treasures ofeach culture and nation, with its originality, in thedynamic process of a dialogue enriched by a peacefulexchange of the rich cultural multiplicity yourepresent."A voice says, "Cry'" (Is 40,6). The Prophet'sexhortation rings out strongly in our congregation. Itis addressed to you, who make up the university andcultural world. You too must cry out, dear friends.Indeed, it is impossible to keep quiet about Christ'struth. It asks to be announced, not arrogantly butfirmly and proudly. This is the parrhesia of which theNew Testament speaks; the cultural allegiance ofChristians must bear its mark.Cry out, young university students, by witnessing toyour faith! Do not be satisfied with a mediocre lifewithout spiritual enthusiasm that is bent only uponachieving your own immediate personal advantage.Saint of the WeekThis is true of all religious, sisters and brothers aswell as priests. Ordinarily they live and pray incommunity. Many of them wear a religious habit.Often they are engaged in a specialized form ofministry.Sacred Heart Catholic Church and School and St. Gerard Mission3

Here are some strategies to boost ouramazing immune systems.EAT HEALTHY! Even though it is okay to indulge,it should be done in moderation. Make sure you balance thosewonderful "not so good for you dishes and sweet things" with wholegrains, fresh fruits and vegetables, lean proteins and low fat dairy.EXERCISE! Exercise increases circulation of disease fighting whiteblood cells. Physical activity flushes bacteria from the lungs. When youexercise the body temperature rises which can keep bacteria fromgrowing. Activity may also lower stress levels, which can lower the riskof illness. We a so blessed to have Laura, Father Bill and Brother Chrisleading the chair exercises on Tuesday and Thursdays in our socialhall. Join them, you will be happy you did and will help to prevent illnessas well.SLEEP WELL AND STRESS LESS! Lack of sleep reduces the amountof antibodies that fight disease and infection. Some people need moreor less sleep, find what is right for you. You should wake up feelingrested. Reducing your stress levels is very important in order to staywell. Prayer, deep breathing, laughter and even a leisurely 10 minutewalk can help.MAKE POSITIVE LIFE STYLE CHANGES! If you still smoke, quit.Maintain a healthy weight and drink in moderation. Remember goodhand washing!Stay well, blessings and peace, Dianne Barr, RN FCN-Parish NurseSacred Heart Catholic Church and School and St. Gerard Mission 6
