2A message fromFr. Mark MurphyDear Parishioners,We have arrived at the Third Sunday of Advent. This midpoint of Advent is traditionally celebrated asGaudete Sunday. Gaudete is Latin word meaning “Rejoice.” Our theme is joy and rejoicing as we continueour Advent preparation for the coming of Christ. The rose-colored candle on the Advent wreath that welight starting on the 3rd Sunday of Advent is meant to be a color of joy.Our readings speak of this joy. Our first reading from the Book of the Prophet Zephaniah begins by tellingus to “Shout for joy, O daughter Zion! Sing joyfully, O Israel.” The reading concludes by telling us the Lord“will rejoice over you he will sing joyfully because of you.” With our first reading, both God and God’speople are given a reason for joy.Our responsorial psalm emphasizes this joy by telling us to “Cry out with joy and gladness.”Then in our second reading, we again hear of joy: “Rejoice in the Lord always. I shall say it again, rejoice!”In this reading from the Letter of Saint Paul to the Philippians, Paul writes the Lord is near, this being thereason for their joy.Today’s Gospel doesn’t specifically mention joy, but as a joyful people with a joyful Lord, today’s Gospelgives us a way to act as a people of joy.In the Gospel, “the crowds” ask John the Baptist what they should do in response to his preaching. Johnsays: “Whoever has two cloaks should share with the person who has none.” A people of joy should sharewith the poor. Then the “tax collectors” ask John what they should do. John says, “Stop collecting morethan what is prescribed.” A people of joy should be content and happy with what God has provided. Finally, the soldiers ask John what they should do. John says, “Do not practice extortion, do not falselyaccuse anyone, and be satisfied with your wages.” A people of joy use what God has given them for thebetterment of others, not of themselves. Our God is a God of joy. God wants people to be a people of joy. Our joy is from the Lord because he isnear. As ambassadors of God’s joy, as we prepare for the fulfillment of our joy when Christ comes again,we should act in a way that shows our discipleship and desire for conversion. When I am joyful, what am I more likely to doto show my love of God or my neighbor? Father Mark MurphyThursday, December 23, 2021 Eucharistic Adorationwill begin at 12:00 PM (not at the regular 8:00 AM).Evelyn Oldridge, mother of Steve OldridgeCome spend time in the Real Presence of Jesusanytime between 12:00 PM - 9:00 PM on this day.SUNDAY, DECEMBER 12, 2021 3RD SUNDAY OF ADVENTMay the Lord grant her eternal peace. 3How to worship at Holy MassA series of short articles about the Mass, written by Archbishop Jackels, will be republished weekly in our bulletin. We invite you to read and to reflect on the following article as one way to grow in the faith.Week 17: Liturgy of the Word: First ReadingA lot of Sacred Scripture is read at Sunday Mass over the course of a year. Even so, the Bible as a whole is not read cover-to-cover,and no particular book of the Bible is read from beginning to end.The First Reading at Sunday Mass is usually from the Old Testament. We read from the Old Testament because it helps us tounderstand Jesus (who was raised as a religious Jew), as well as his teachings and example.Part of the plan for the selection of the Bible passages is to pair the First Reading and the Gospel, perhaps because they have similarthemes, or because the Gospel talks about the fulfillment of what is spoken of in the First Reading.Read the entire series at dbqarch.org/the-4th-hKnights of Columbus Christmas PartySt. Jude Advent BINGOThe Knights of Columbus Adult Christmas Party returns. 5Praying the O Antiphons at ChristmasThe O Antiphons are a series of seven verses dating back to at least since the eighthcentury and are prayed during evening prayer (vespers) during the last week ofAdvent, December 17 - December 23. You may recognize the O Antiphons from thepopular Advent hymn, “O Come, O Come Emmanuel”.Each antiphon is based on a different title for Jesus from the Old Testament. Therepeated use of the vitally important “Come!” gives voice to our longing for theMessiah, both at Christmas and at the Second Coming. At the conclusion of eachantiphon, there is a plea for Jesus to do powerful work in our lives.During the last week of Advent, you are invited to pray the O Antiphons, tomeditate on the scripture readings listed .December 17 - O Wisdom, O Holy Word of God, you govern all creationwith your strong yet tender care. Come, let nothing keep you from coming to our aid.(Isaiah 11:1-4; 45:23; 52:13; Luke 1:32-33)December 20 - O Key of David, O Royal Power of Israel controlling at yourwill the gate of heaven: come, break down the prison walls of death forthose who dwell in darkness and the shadow of death; and lead yourcaptive people into freedom. (Isaiah 22:22; 42:6-7; Luke 4:16-19)December 21—O Radiant Dawn, splendor of eternal light, sun of justice:come, shine on those who dwell in darkness and the shadow of death.(Malachi 3:20; Isaiah 9:1; Psalm 107:14)December 22 - O King of All the Nations, the only joy of every humanheart; O Keystone of the mighty arch of man, come and save the creatureyou fashioned from the dust.(Isaiah 28:16; Genesis 2:7; Matthew 21:42;1 Peter 2:4-5)December 23 - O Emmanuel, King and Lawgiver, Desire of the Nations,Savior of all People, come and set us free, Lord our God.(Isaiah 7:14; Malachi 3:1; Matthew 1:21-23).Sources: The “O Antiphons”, United States Conference of Catholic Bishops“Praying the O Antiphons of Advent”, The Word Among UsSUNDAY, DECEMBER 12, 2021 3RD SUNDAY OF ADVENT Individual Reconciliation Timesat St. Jude Church During AdventSaturdays: 3:30 PM - 4:00 PMSundays: 7:30 AM - 8:00 AMMondays: 6:15 PM - 7:00 PMTuesday, December 21:12:00 PM - 1:00 PMTuesday, December 21:5:30 PM - 6:30 PMWednesday, December 22:5:30 PM - 6:30 PMThursday, December 23:12:00 PM - 1:00 PMCommunal Reconciliation withIndividual Confession* Thursday, December 16 at 6:30 PMat St. Ludmila Church* Saturday, December 18 at 9:00 AMat St. John XXIII ChurchWhat is General Absolution?General Absolution is a form of theSacrament of Reconciliation. It is usedduring extraordinary times, such aswhen a group of people are in dangerof death, or when it is extremelydifficult or impossible for people toreceive the Sacrament ofReconciliation. At a General Absolutionservice, people still gather, but insteadof going to individual priests andconfessing their sins as we do during acommunal reconciliation service, apriest prays the Prayer of Absolutionover the gathered people, and throughthe Holy Spirit and the ministry of theChurch, their sins are forgiven. DuringGeneral Absolution, one does notspeak aloud their sins. However, if onehas committed a mortal sin, when oneis safely able to do so, one must stillconfess that sin at individualReconciliation.Pope Francis has allowed bishops toauthorize General Absolution due tothe coronavirus pandemic. When was the last time youever felt like doing that? Fear, uncertainty, pressure, negativity, disappointment, andmyriad other human experiences can rob usof joy. We can never predict what life willbring. As unsettling as that can often seem, life’s unpredictability is also the very thingthat allows it to be exciting andadventuresome! We know that life can bedifficult, and it is unrealistic to expect it to beotherwise. God never promised an easy road. But, when a person truly falls in love withGod and discovers the peacefulness andassurance of God’s presence, then a depth ofunderstanding will be brought to everythingthey do and experience. Nothing will be ableto rob them of joy! When we realize thatGod, the King of Israel, is in our midst andwith us, there is no further misfortune tofear. We celebrate the beauty and wonder ofGod’s gift of joy today as we ready ourselves, even more excitedly, for the coming of ourSavior. Do not fear and do not be discouraged. There is a power and presence withinus, our God, who has made us, who loves usand who will keep us. What more do weneed? Rejoice! LPiST. JUDE CHURCH CEDAR RAPIDS, IA

Dec 12, 2021 · Our theme is joy and rejoicing as we continue our Advent preparation for the coming of Christ. The rose-colored candle on the Advent wreath that we light starting on the 3rd Sunday of Advent is meant to be a color of joy. Our readings speak of this joy. Our rst reading from the
