September 17, 2021Fellow New Jerseyans:On behalf of Rutgers, The State University of New Jersey, I present our 2021 InstitutionalProfile Report—a means by which to share timely, objective data about our educational andadministrative operations.Although for a second year we faced tremendous challenges related to the ongoing COVID-19pandemic, we were still able to award 19,000 degrees, offer instruction to more than 70,000students, and provide valuable service to the people of New Jersey, such as conducting clinicaltrials for coronavirus vaccines now in use around the world.Rutgers is dedicated to our mission of teaching, research, and service to New Jersey. It has a unique history: from itsinception as one of the nation’s nine colonial colleges, Rutgers grew to become the land-grant collegeof New Jersey in 1864, and to assume full university status in 1924. Legislative acts of 1945 and 1956designated it “The State University of New Jersey.” The University of Newark merged with Rutgers in1946, and the College of South Jersey in Camden joined in 1950. In 2013, most units of the formerUniversity of Medicine and Dentistry of New Jersey were integrated into Rutgers.
