Back PUBLICATION OF THESIS AND DISSERTATION TITLESAs a service to all SWST members (and other readers), within the next several issues of Woodand Fiber Science, we will begin publishing titles submitted to us by graduate students who havecompleted their programs. In many cases, this information is not readily available outside of theparticular university. Often the information is published substantially later or in some cases, notat all.A prescribed format for submissions by students is given on the SWST web page(http://www.swst.org/thesis.html) Also on the web page are links to the relevant tml). If your university isn‘t listed and you would like itto be, please contact Vicki Herian (vicki@swst.org). Students should submit their ―title‖ to theEditor, Wood and Fiber Science (frank.beall@nature.berkeley.edu). Back NEW SUBSCRIBER TO W&FSSWST has a new subscriber to our journal, Wood and Fiber Science: the National Forest Libraryand Information Centre at the Forest Research Institute in Dehra Dun, India. We offered a special incentive to them to begin subscribing: a printed copy of all past issues ofthe journal for their library.SWST welcomes this new subscriber. The invited delegates were comprised of a select group ofprofessionals from the disciplines represented by our member organizations and other essentialinterested parties. More details for both of these programs can be found at the RNRF website―www.rnrf.org”The first was a Roundtable with the 16th Chief of the Forest Service, Abagail (Gail) Kimbell, andher Deputy Chief for the National Forest System, Joel Holtrop. The Chief talked of her emphasison 1) Climate change and its impact on our Nation‘s forests, 2) the importance of water (58% ofall municipal water goes through Forest Service lands), and 3) the loss of a connection to nature, especially for kids(rectify by programs such as National Get Outdoors Day in June). Herconcern of the increasing cost of firefighting and its impact on Forest Service programs was alsodiscussed.

Joel Holtrop, Gail Kimball, Barry Starke (Chairman RNRF Board) Myself, Bob Day (ExecutiveDirector RNRF)Dr. David CleavesThe next day at RNRF‘s Spring Meeting, a panel of experts at the American Geophysical Unionspoke on the preparation for the impacts of climate change. Dr. David Cleaves, Acting DeputyChief for FS Research and Development spoke on implications of land management. Daveemphasized the changes in range of specific species located in the United States and how thesechanges have affected wildlife habitat and water runoff. He also emphasized measures theForest Service might take to adapt to these changes. Other panelist included Dr. Mathew Larsen,Associate Director for Water for the U. S. Geological Survey; who addressed climate change‘simplications for water management and Dr. Paul Higgins, Senior Policy Analyst for theAmerican Meteorological Society; who discussed implications to biotic populations. All panelistpointed out that mitigation and adaptation to climate change were important, but mitigation wasthe more difficult to achieve politically. A lively discussion between panelists and the delegatesfollowed.Howard N. RosenSWST RNRF Representative
