Young SibsConnectEven during a pandemicyoung sibs share “Thank-y”Things in SibshopsNever underes"mate the depth ofthinking of young WisconSibs. OurNovember Sibshops explored siblinggra"tude with the theme “Thank-yThings”. Expressing gra"tude is key toresiliency and well-being.The kids a!ending Sibshop, some forthe very first "me, were full of energyand nerves. Some were pros withusing Zoom, but most were notaltogether sure and had ques"ons. Will it be like school? Will I feelweird? Will I feel I belong? Will it beboring? Right away, they got theirques"ons answered and relaxed. Thiswasn’t school. This was somethingjust for kids like them. This was fun. With paper and markers Bri!any, ourWisconSibs Youth Coordinator, gotthem crea"ng two hand “ThankyTurkeys”, tracing around their handsand decora"ng each finger like turkeyfeathers. Then she asked “What areyou thankful for?”. The children shylyresponded with typical answers,“family, friends, food.”Brittany “hands” out supplies using long tongs.In-person Sibshops held at the Building for Kidsprovides plenty of room for safety. As they became more involved incoloring the first turkey represen"ngthemselves, they eagerly jumped inwith: “I’m thankful for my new2 VOLUME 19, ISSUE 2babysi!er.” “I’m thankful for mybrother.” “I’m thankful for making myown choices.” And these: “theRevolu"onary War”, “TV”, “SibCamp”, “Sibshop”, “animals”, “myown space”, “my daddy”, “DoctorAnother sib smiledand said, “I thinkmy brother wouldbe thankful forME!”Who” (yes, these are kids ages 6-8)!Now for the other turkey, the onethat represented their siblings withdisabili"es. Bri!any asked, “What doyou think your sibling with disabili"esmay be thankful for?” The Sibs took afew moments to think about that, butsoon a Sib popped up and exclaimed“STRAWBERRIES! My sister lovesstrawberries. When we wentstrawberry picking, I think shethought she was in StrawberryHeaven.”Another sibling squealed, “Dolphins! The only movie she wants to watchis ‘Dolphin Tale’. She’s thankful fordolphins.” Another sib smiled andsaid, “I think my brother would bethankful for ME!”How do you know someone isthankful? The answers came quickly“we hug each other”, “we playtogether”, “we help each other”.Future Sibshops; A Big DillJust like pickles, sibs experiencesweet moments in life, sour ones, and somethat feel likeno big “dill”.We’re goingto have funin 2021Sibshopsexploring allkinds of “pickles” siblings can findthemselves in. Special Siblings: A Grandmother’sPerspectiveLike siblings, grandparents often are overlooked. But siblings knowgrandparents are some of their greatest supporters and advocates.By Deb Smet, Grandmother, WisconSibs volunteerMy oldest grandchild hascerebral palsy. He is 24 yearsold and can’t speak, walk, orfe himself. He has thefeedsweetest disposi"on and smiles easily. He giggles like crazy when he hears a fartor anything resembling a fart. He getsvery upset when he thinks his li!le brother is ge/ng hurt wrestling.days they take turns helping himopen presents. They know whatmovies he likes and what videogames are his favorite. They alsoget irritated with him just likethey would with any big brother.Logan has two sisters and a brother andthey’ve never known life without abrother with a disability. When Loganhad various surgeries, they went tograndma’s or stayed behind with Dad.When he came home, he was front andcenter un"l his recovery was complete. But here is what a grandmother observes. Logan’s siblings are mature beyond their years. They are confident, aware, and adapt to change be!er thansome adults. They understand medicalterms and condi"ons more than most. They will be well prepared for adulthoodbecause they have problem solved, adjusted on a dime, and have grown upknowing they are part of somethingmuch bigger and it isn’t all about them.At a young age they learned how to feedhim and give him a drink without spillingall over his shirt. At Christmas and birth-I know it hasn’t been easy for them butthey’ll be the first to tell you they’velearned more from Logan than they’vetaught him.Logan will always be disabled and will always need help. And, no ma!er what thathelp looks like in the future, his siblings willbe some of the most important people inhis life. They haven’t had it easy and some"mes they may feel sorry for themselves orcomplain, but then they move on. They willdo great things – in fact, they already have.VOLUME 19, ISSUE 2 7IRIS Consultant Agency (ICA)Contact Duane Budelier to place an ad today!dbudelier@4LPi.com or (800) 950-9952 x2525Helping Cathy to Secure a Bright Future for DavidSupporting aging caregiversof a loved one with a disabilitythrough special needs trustsand futures planning services.414-774-6255 LifeNavigators.org7203 West Center Street, Wauwatosa, WI 53210We believe in the INFINITEPOSSIBILITIES of every person. We support you to live your best lifeat home, in your community and at work.LET’S GET STARTED!Call toll-free: 844-520-1712 Email: connections@lsswis.orgVisit: connectionswis.orgTodd KlauerPresident of Programs1244 Midway Road, Suite CMenasha, WI 54952Phone: 920-232-3649Cell: 920-642-3848toddk@toddsteven.comFor ad info. call 1-800-950-9952 www.4lpi.comWisconSibs Inc., Appleton, WIC 4C 01-1475
