Academic RegaliaThe academic costume worn todayat Florida Gulf Coast Universityoriginated in the universities ofthe Middle Ages when a warmgown and hood were useful forscholars and clerics in unheatedbuildings. The distinctive gownalso served to set the studentsapart from their fellow citizens ofthe community.Until the Civil War, students atmost American universities worecaps and gowns daily while inresidence. These varied in designuntil they were standardized in1894. At that time it was decidedthat all robes would be black;bachelor’s gowns of silk with longclosed sleeves; master’s gowns ofsilk with longer sleeves; doctoralgowns of silk with longer sleevesand faced with black velvet bandsaround each sleeve above theAcademic Hood ColorsThe color lining the hoodindicates the following:Apricot – NursingBlue (dark) – PhilosophyBlue (light) – EducationBrown – Fine ArtsDrab – BusinessGreen – MedicineGreen (sage) – Physical EducationOrange – EngineeringPink – MusicPurple – LawSalmon – Public HealthScarlet – TheologyViolet – ArchitectureWhite – Arts and LettersYellow (citron) – Social WorkYellow (golden) – ScienceYellow (lemon) – Library Serviceselbow. Hoods, made of the samematerials as the gowns, werevaried in length with the degree. The lining of the hood indicatedthe academic discipline in whichThe MaceThe mace represents the University’smission and purpose. The University’seagle symbol identifies the SouthwestFlorida physical environment andthe University’s environmentalmission. The eagle embodies thecharacteristics of freedom, strength, spirit, intelligence, and grace. Theupswept wings form a laurel wreath,a symbol of FGCU’s pursuit ofexcellence. The original Florida Gulf CoastUniversity mace made its debut atcommencement in December 2000and started the tradition of theFaculty Senate president as macebearer in academic processions. Thetradition of a mace bearer dates backto the Middle Ages when officialswere escorted by a mace bearerduring official ceremonies and courtsessions.the degree was earned. Membersof the FGCU Board of Trusteeswear ceremonial gowns regardlessof the degree they hold.In the past few years, severaluniversities have decided toreturn to a distinctive gowndesign, particularly in the colorof the garment. There has beenno change, however, in thestandard colors that represent thedisciplines.Tassels on the caps (mortarboards)worn by the faculty may be black,or of a color indicating the degree. Those who hold a doctorate maywear a gold tassel. It is traditionalfor degree candidates to wear theirtassels on the right and for thoseholding degrees to wear them onthe left. Graduates transfer theirtassels to the left after conferringof the degrees by the President. The MedallionTraditionally, colleges and universities use medallions onceremonial occasions. This custom dates back to the MiddleAges when religious orders used medallions to indicateaffiliations and to commemorate events. The Florida Gulf Coast University presidential medallionidentifies the president as a distinguished scholar and anesteemed academic leader. The medallion is embossed with the university seal thatdisplays a natural scene of the sun’s rays, palm trees andthe stylized eagle representing FGCU’s environmentalconservation mission. The University’s pursuit of Knowledge,Truth and Wisdom is represented by the words printed on aninverted pyramid with a mortarboard at the bottom tip. Thepresident is given the responsibility to develop and maintainan atmosphere in which these noble pursuits thrive. The medallion is suspended from an actual chain calledthe chain of office. On the left side of the chain, four platescontain the names of each FGCU president in chronologicalorder. On the right, four plates display the tenure dates of thepresidents. The chain contains blank plates for future FGCUpresidents to be added to the chain of office.13
