Discussion among CF participants from 6 university partners during CFT in Ho Chi Minh City.Sustaining Robust Faculty DevelopmentThis Playbook reviews ongoing interventionswithin Vietnam’s BUILD-IT university network. The playbook is a manual for faculty to ensurethat The Certified Facilitator and Master TeacherTraining program is effectively facilitated andsustained. It is a starting point to inspire facultyto become trained, engaged, and to maintaina highly adaptable, scalable, and sustainabletraining model. This Playbook was developed by membersof the BUILD-IT staff along with faculty fromBUILD-IT partner universities. The CFT/MTTwas developed to create a high yield of trainedfaculty in a short duration of time who will bebetter prepared to improve project-based andstudent-centered learning in the classrooms. The CFT/MTT produces champion educatorswho will be the drivers of success in theuniversities. The CFT/MTT training model and curriculumprovides universities with a robust and effectivefaculty training experience that helps facultyreimagine their teaching practices by infusingmodern teaching methodology and bestpractices in tertiary pedagogy, soft skills, andflipped classroom techniques.BUILD-IT PLAYBOOK November 2021“I really like the way that thecourse is organized through the LMSsystem, online, face-to-face, andcommunication during the MTT class. As one of 25 lecturers participatingin an MTT at Lac Hong University,I learned a lot from the CFs andcolleagues about how to improvelearner’s engagement and motivation. In addition, I realize that organizingappropriate learning activities helpsstudents become more active andengaged in discovering knowledge.”Dr. Nguyen Thi Nhu QuynhDean of Faculty of PharmaceuticalLac Hong UniversityCreated and Facilitated byBUILD-IT Partner Faculty3

As the CFT/MTT program continues toevolve at your university, please continueto consider the objectives and outcomesthat were mutually established duringthe design and implementation of theprogram. These objectives and outcomeswere at the core of the program and bydefining these ensured the continuedsuccess of the program. These objectivesand outcomes will help CFs remaincentered and grounded as they continueto evolve the program.Lecturer participants work on an activity for “everyday examples” in a Faceto-Face during a Master Teacher Training (MTT).CFT/MTT Objectives: Demonstrate a design-thinkingentrepreneurial mindset using appliedcurriculum that reflects workforce andindustry priorities, utilizing active teaching/learning techniques and problem/projectbased learning within their courses andprograms. Utilize measurable course learning outcomesand utilize robust assessment and evaluationprocedures in support of continuous courseand program improvement as well asinternational accreditation and recognition. Incorporate digital pedagogy and bestpractices while evaluating instructionaltechnology to achieve course and programoutcomes, share resources, and collaboratewith other faculty. Integrate professional (soft) skills into theirinstructional model and improve theirteaching practices and courses utilizing anunderstanding of pedagogy, educationaltheory, and best practice combined withanalysis of assessment.CFT/MTT Outcomes: Demonstrate the ability to effectively utilizemodern pedagogy and instructional methodsin STEM courses. Demonstrate the application of relevanteducational theory and practices, in theVietnamese educational context, to increasestudent engagement, and facilitate retentionand achievement of learning outcomes intheir primary STEM course. Demonstrate effective instructorpresentation, communication, and facilitationtechniques. Clearly articulate the need for educationchange in Vietnam using written and oralcommunication methods. Identify and outline opportunities tocollaborate with STEM faculty on studentprojects. Sustain the viability and execution of thisprogram after curricular migration has beencompleted. Continue to offer, at a minimum, 1CFT and 3 MTT per year.4BUILD-IT PLAYBOOK November 2021

Certified Facilitator TrainingBuilding a Facilitator CommunityThe CFT is the foundation of this training programand the key driver to the success of the trainingprogram. Current and trained CFs should continue tocertify faculty members at their university who havepreviously completed the Master Teacher Training. TheCFT should be viewed as a pool of faculty who all havethe ability and knowledge to facilitate an MTT on theirown. Partner universities should: Strive to have between 1-2 CFTs per year A CFT should last 1 or 2 days Recruit 10-15 new CFs per year Organize and facilitate CFTs on campus Be responsible for the CFT and MTT Moodle shellsand all documents and supplies needed to conductMTTs. Be responsible for maintaining and keeping trackof all digital tools and applications used to trackprogress during MTTs.Managing Content and Innovating CurriculumIn order to provide a rich learning experience forfaculty year after year, CFs should convene periodicallyto discuss changes or revisions to the curriculum, workto coordinate trainings with the university, and identifyfaculty to engage in the program. The content could beexpanded to satisfy the needs of the departments orareas of student need. The BUILD-IT CFT/MTT is veryheavily structured towards STEM content. Universitiesshould try to certify faculty from other departmentsoutside STEM departments to demonstrate value tofaculty from other departments.Activity for lecturer participants to experience designingclassroom activities at different level of Bloom’s Taxonomyled by Dr. Hoang Trung Kien, CF lead from HCMUTE.“The training helps enhanceoutcome-based educationwhich is at a very initialstage in Vietnam. It providesfaculty a practical approachto implement better teachingand learning activities to helpstudents achieve higher orderthinking learning outcomes.”Dr. Ngo Van ThuyenChairman of University CouncilHo Chi Minh City University of TechnologyActivity for lecturer participants to experience designingclassroom activities at different level of Bloom’s Taxonomyled by Dr. Hoang Trung Kien, CF lead from HCMUTE.BUILD-IT PLAYBOOK November 20215

Master Teacher TrainingA training session led by Dr. Nguyen Huy Phuc, CF lead from IUH.Producing Trained FacultyIn the Spring of 2020, partner universities havecultivated and maintained their own Moodle MTTMoodle course. The sustainability of the MTT isreliant on the institution’s Certified Facilitatorsshould: Curate the MTT Moodle Shell, curriculum,e-tool accounts, and materials Update content periodically to meetthe demands of the university’s facultydevelopment strategy Expand curriculum to be inclusive of othernon-STEM related programs Strive to have 2-3 MTT per year Organize and facilitate MTT on campus Enroll participants in Moodle course Facilitate F2F sessions using MTT coursecurriculum Recruit MTT graduates into CFTSince 2017, over 300 faculty fromBUILD-IT partner universities havebeen trained through the MasterTeacher Training Program.6The CFT is the foundation ofthis training program and thekey driver to the success of thetraining program.Facilitating Cohorts Since the Fall of 2020, each university hasbeen successfully conducting autonomousrounds of the MTT. In order to continue thisprogress, CFs should convene regularly tomap out an annual training schedule to target45-60 faculty per year. With a 3-week, intensive training program,CFs should be giving applicable faculty afew weeks of lead time to work the traininginto their schedule. While the structure ofboth the CFT and MTT remains unchangedsince inception (see diagram below), oncethe training was moved into an autonomousstate, some universities have experimentedwith alternative schedules and deliverymodalities. It is up to each universities’ CFs todecide how best deliver the training. The CFT/MTT has been a successful trainingprogram because of the faculty who havedeveloped and facilitated it. It is a Vietnamesedesigned program for Vietnamese faculty.BUILD-IT PLAYBOOK November 2021
