Inside, the teachers setthe goal of enabling preschool-aged children to enjoy aworld of discovery and to reach their social, academicand physical potential. Over the past thirty-plus years, the school has grown and evolved. No longer a one-roompreschool, the Academy now boasts a large campus, housing students ages six weeks through middle school.Manhattan Academy is proud of the reputation it hasbuilt in the community as a premier environment foryoung students.Through the progression of ourprogram, from infants to middle school, our studentshave been able to build consistently on the foundationthey have developed at the lower grades, constantlyexcelling at every stage.PhilosophyThough two trees might be planted side by side, they will still grow at different rates. So it is with children. It isfor this reason that Manhattan Academy is committed to providing a program that answers the needs andinterests of the individual child. The school is a place where independence, creativity, free choice and selfassessment are encouraged. It is a community devoted to illuminating a child’s sense of importance and value, where uniqueness and self confidence can flourish – a place where individuality and differences are celebrated.Once students enter our doors, they embark on a world of discovery where they experience the joy of learningand have their imaginations ignited. They develop a reverence for education and are given the tools to begin theirjourney as educated, productive, successful citizens.StaffThe staff at Manhattan Academy consists of educated, experienced and nurturing professionals with one goal incommon: creating an environment where students’intellectual capabilities are stimulated and their emotionalwell-being is maintained. Montessori Community: Toddler and PrimaryThe Montessori philosophy of Manhattan Academy’s Toddler and Primary programs attempts to capitalizeon the natural hunger for knowledge that each child possesses in order to cultivate a lifelong motivation tolearn and grow. This method of education will enhance the potential of your child by using stimulatingmaterials to ensure that the classroom is an exciting place for each student to learn. Education atManhattan Academy’s Montessori Community is driven by each child’s independent curiosity and selfmotivation, helping him/her develop a strong self-concept, along with cognitive abilities and social skills.Practical Life:The Montessori philosophy stresses practicallife activities as a premier method fordeveloping fine motor skills and coordination.Such activities include wet and dry pouring, cutting, stitching, sorting, and more advancedactivities, such as self-buttoning, zipping, sweeping, polishing, greetings, serving, andflower arranging. These activities encourage asense of independence and self-confidence andalso help to build concentration skills, a senseof order and an attention to detail that will beused in language arts and mathematicslearning.Sensorial:Children at this age learn best through directcontact with their environment by means oftheir senses, and the Montessori philosophycapitalizes on this. We expose children tospecific materials intended to teach throughthe use of different textures, multiple shapesand sizes and varying sounds and smells. Byisolating one particular attribute of an object(i.e: smell, shape, texture) we help the childrendistinguish and categorize the wealth ofinformation before them.“I am so impressed with how much funthe school makes learning; most of thetime they are having so much fun, theydo not realize how much they arelearning!I feel I have given mychildren a strong foundation for theirschool years to come.”- Julie Carew (MA Parent)

Montessori Community: Toddler and PrimaryLanguage:Here at Manhattan Academy, we infuse our languagecurriculum into our sensorial and practical life activitiesin order to create a solid foundation for these youngstudents. The children begin to associate each activity, symbol, and tool with a word, reinforcing their languageacquisition through use of the object. Additionally, thecoordination skills developed in the practical life andsensorial activities will also begin to stimulate thosemuscles used in writing. The plethora of excitingMontessori language materials facilitates a greater easein the mastery of letter recognition, phonetics, wordformation, and grammar rules.Students grasplanguage concepts early on, all while having fun.“I love school I really do!”- Heidi RobleyPrimary“Everyone is your friend here.”- Drew Beimel7th gradeMath:In the area of mathematics, our philosophy stresses the introduction of concrete, hands-on methods oflearning and a gradual shift to more abstract concepts as the student progresses. Each child masters amathematic skill at his/her own pace, utilizing the specific Montessori materials to propel them into a higherlevel of understanding. The materials make math more intelligible and fun. Mathematics is infused intomany daily activities here at Manhattan Academy, such as identifying the date on the calendar, usingnumber puzzles, or properly ordering numbers in succession.Music and Art:Along with our emphasis on self-motivation, comes our stress on individual creativity and imagination. Eachday, our students sing and dance, expressing themselves musically, playing musical instruments anddiscovering the concepts of rhythm. Our art sessions are also a time for our students to utilize theirimaginations, while exploring the concepts of texture, color, shape and hand-eye coordination. The children’smusical and artistic abilities are showcased yearly at our Art Gala and vocal concerts.,

Because of the interactive, concrete approach we take in the earlier years, mathematics becomes a topic that entices andmotivates students, enabling them to conquermore complicated and abstract concepts as theyears progress.Social Studies: Our children become young, worldly scholars as our program tracks thedevelopment of societies from ancient civilizationthrough current times.
