FIRST MULTISTANDARD PLATFORMFor automotive, broadcast, navigation and wireless applicationsModern RF signal generation with direct digital RFupconversion conceptPowerful internal baseband generatorThe R&S SMCV100B vector signal generator features anew direct RF DAC concept for RF signal generation. Thisconcept enables I/Q modulation and upconversion in thedigital domain which eliminates I and Q imbalance errorsand LO leakage as known from traditional analog I/Qmodulators.The direct RF DAC concept is used up to a frequency of2.5 GHz. For RF frequencies 2.5 GHz, an analog mixingconcept is used to bring the signal to the desired outputfrequency. The R&S SMCV100B provides powerful hardware for internal baseband signal generation. The R&S SMCV100B either generates signals in real time in FPGAs or it uses theARB generator to directly generate I/Q signals for d igitalcommunications standards. The R&S WinIQSIM2 signal simulation software can also be used to generate I/Qsignals.Real-time signal generation in FPGAs is especially used forbroadcast standards. This technological approach enablescontinuous and very long uninterrupted signal generationwith different data content (audio, video, data, PRBS) fordecoding. Such long sequences are required for testingthe performance or EMC of tuners.Measured SSB phase noise for different carrier frequenciesSSB phase noise in dBc (1 Hz)With the R&S SMCVB-K709 low phase noise option100 MHz500 MHz1 GHz2 GHz3 GHz4 GHz6 GHz7 101102103104105106107Frequency offset in Hz4

Internal I/Q streaming capabilitiesR&S WinIQSIM2 waveform generationThe playing time of arbitrary waveform generatorsdepends on the available hardware memory size and onsignal parameters such as the signal bandwidth. Thiscombination usually limits the playing time of conventionalARB generators to a few seconds, which is a problemfor measurement applications that require a longer signalduration.Modulated signals for different standards can be generated with the R&S WinIQSIM2 simulation software. Thesimulation software supports wireless standards such as5G and LTE and the generation of noncellular signals suchas Wi-Fi (IEEE 802.11xx) and many others. For such applications, the R&S SMCV100B offers theoption of playing back I/Q waveforms from the internalsolid state hard disk (64 Gbyte SSD). The maximum RFbandwidth is 56 MHz. A playing time of almost 4 minutescan be achieved with a 60 Gbyte sequence stored on theSSD. For signals with a lower RF bandwidth, the playingtime is extended accordingly. A 100 kHz wide FM signal, for example, can be played over a period of several days.If it is necessary to play even longer I/Q signals,it is possible (via the digital I/Q interface) to usethe R&S SMCV100B in combination with otherRohde & Schwarz instruments such as the R&S IQWwideband I/Q data recorder.Navigation standards for functional Go/NoGo testsWith the R&S WinIQSIM2 simulation software, theR&S SMCV100B supports the GPS, GLONASS, Galileo, and BeiDou navigation standards for functional Go/NoGo tests.Signal content for each navigation standard can be generated with a single navigation satellite. The output of thissatellite signal makes it possible to quickly perform asimple functional Go/NoGo test of the navigation receiver. For a functional test with a position fix, predefined waveforms of limited length can be played. This makes theR&S SMCV100B ideal for production applications.GNSS signals supported by R&S WinIQSIM2 Power spectral density of the most important GNSS signalsL2G2E6/B3L1/E1/B1G1QuadraturephaseIn phaseL5/E5/B2GPSGalileoGLONASSBeiDouRemark: Galileo E6/B3 on roadmap for future release.Rohde & Schwarz R&S SMCV100B Vector Signal Generator 5

CENTRAL RF SIGNAL GENERATIONAND CABLE DISTRIBUTIONDue to the high RF output power, the signals generated bythe R&S SMCV100B can also be fed into cable distributionnetworks. In this scenario, several R&S SMCV100B instrumentsgenerate the same or different signals at different frequencies. The R&S SMCV100B signal generators are typicallyall located in one room, the central transmitter room. The receiver under test receives all signals fed into thecable at its RF input and can perform the test with theintended signal by simply switching to the respectivereceiving frequency. The permanently available signal at each test station is adistinct advantage since the individual production lines donot have to be synchronized and production is thereforenot subject to time dependencies. From this room, the R&S SMCV100B signal generatorsfeed the generated RF signals at different frequencies intoa common distribution network. The signals are combinedin a single cable and can be distributed to several production lines and test stations.Central transmitter room application with R&S SMCV100B and manufacturing line distributionCentral transmitter roomCable distributionnetwork SMCV100BManufacturing linesAM on f1FM1 on f2Test station 1HD Radio on f3DAB on f4Test station 2With diplexer,RF combiner,RF splitter, etc.XM Radio on f5Test station 3Test station 4GNSS on f6Test station 5AM7oFM n 1f1oHD n fRa 2DA dioB oXM on n fRa 4f 3GN dioonSBl S on 5fue fto 6oth onfBluetooth on f7Frequency12

BASIC GNSS RECEIVER TESTINGThe R&S SMCV100B GNSS solutions cover all production testing requirements for GNNS receivers.Using GNSS waveforms for basic receiver testsMany Rohde & Schwarz signal generators can be used toplay back GNSS waveforms. This approach is ideal forsetting up a basic and cost-efficient single-channel testenvironment for GNSS receiver manufacturing and forperforming basic sensitivity tests. GNSS waveforms canbe created using the R&S WinIQSIM2 simulation software and are also available for the R&S SMCV100B.For more information, seewww.rohde-schwarz.com/product/winiqsim2GNSS production testerThe R&S SMCV100B GNSS simulation capabilitiesaddress specific needs for GNSS chipset testing and speed-optimized production testing of GNSS receivers.During such tests, the basic GNSS signal reception andthe connection between the antenna and GNSS chipsetneed to be verified. Two types of tests are typically usedfor this purpose.Go/NoGo tests on the physical layerThe GNSS receiver is stimulated with a navigation standard signal. Since the simulated signal represents just onesatellite in the navigation standard, the receiver cannotcarry out positioning. This is a pure Go/NoGo test that canbe used to test different aspects of the overall system, forinstance the cabling between the GNSS receiving antennaand the navigation receiver. The R&S WinIQSIM2 simulation software is used for thissimple test. It generates a single GPS, GLONASS, BeiDouor Galileo satellite signal. The base configuration of a 3GHz R&S SMCV100B with 64 Msample ARB is sufficientfor this test.Functional tests with positioning fixThe GNSS receiver needs simulated signals from at leastfour navigation satellites in order to fix a position basedon the information transmitted in the signals. The GNSSreceiver has to be synchronized with the signals beforeit can process the position data and fix the position. Thedifferent GNSS standards require different waveformlengths to perform a position fix. The R&S SMCV100Bwith the R&S SMCVB-K511 option with 512 Msamplecan handle such position-fix sequences for each of thesestandards. For long position-fix sequences, the R&S SMCV100B isused with the R&S SMCVB-K505 waveform streamingoption together with predefined waveforms. Each waveform contains a defined navigation scenario with a fixed, unchangeable position. Proprietary I/Q sequences canstill be used and played out. The I/Q sequences playedout with the waveform streaming option are modulatedand transmitted on the selected navigation standard’sfrequency.EXAMPLES OF ARB MEMORY DEPTHS NEEDED FORGNSS WAVEFORMSGalileo E1 has the largest memory requirements with about25 Msample for a playing time of one second and an over sampling factor of two. A 64 Msample ARB would result in amaximum playing time of 2.5 seconds.GPS L1 has a much simpler signal structure and only needs a2 Msample memory depth for a playing time of one second. A64 Msample ARB can broadcast a GPS L1-signal for 32 secondswithout interruption. This R&S SMCV100B configuration isideal for functional tests such as signal tracking and sensitivitytests that only need short playing times.Rohde & Schwarz R&S SMCV100B Vector Signal Generator 13

WAVEFORM STREAMING FROM INTERNAL SSD FOR EMC TESTINGAND VALIDATIONWith its waveform streaming functionality, theR&S SMCV100B also supports users working with EMCtest applications. When performing EMC measurements on receivers, it isessential to feed an uninterrupted wanted signal to theDUT to detect possible effects of an interferer. Unlike thereal-time coder approach, which can generate an uninterruptible signal, ARB generator approaches are mostlybased on a limited memory from which the signals areoutput.Depending on the signal properties, an uninterruptedsignal can usually only be provided for a short playingtime. The R&S SMCV100B waveform streaming functionalitycan stream long I/Q waveform sequences from the internalSSD, from an external hard disk via the USB 3.0 inter face or from an I/Q playback device (e.g. an R&S IQW)via the digital I/Q interface. The stream is output at theR&S SMCV100B RF output.Waveform streaming via digital I/Q interface on an XM radio frequency14Use of the Linux operating system means there are norestrictions on the maximum manageable file size in theR&S SMCV100B. The USB 3.0 interface supports playbackfrom external storage media. The R&S SMCV100B can be used to generate both thewanted signal and the interferer.
