CLASS NOTES1950sAnthony J. Grezik ’53 is celebrating 50years in the practice of law.Donald F. Castor ’56 and Mickey Adamswere married on Dec. 28, 2002 in AltamonteSprings, Fla. Bay Area Legal Services hasendowed the Judge Don Castor CommunityLaw Center to honor his dedication andservice as an advocate for Bay Area LegalServices. The Community Law Centerencompasses several existing projects, suchas the affordable housing initiative, community outreach/training, the faith-based initiative program and the Community Counselpro bono program at Bay Area LegalServices. Judge Castor was the originalexecutive director of Bay Area Legal Serviceswhen it was created in 1967.Robert E. Beach ’58, a Sixth Judicial Circuitsenior court judge, continues to compile astring of open-water swimming successes. Hehas recently traveled to Morocco, Tibet, Nepal,Bhutan and crossed the U.S. on Amtrak.Bruce R. Jacob ’59, dean emeritus andprofessor of law at Stetson, presented hisreflections on the case of Gideon v.Wainwright as part of a week-long celebration of the 40th Anniversary of the landmarkcase. On March 18, 1963, Dean Jacobargued the case before the U.S. SupremeCourt as an assistant attorney general forstate of Florida. Former U.S. Supreme CourtJustice Abe Fortas argued the ex-bank robber’s case, which led to the decision thatcreated the public-defender system in Floridaand many parts of America.1960sJoseph G. Donahey Jr. ’61 retired as aSixth Judicial Circuit court judge at the endof December 2002. Judge Donahey wasappointed to the circuit bench in 1995 byGovernor Lawton Chiles. In 1999 he becameblind after a problem in surgery. Ten monthslater, Judge Donahey returned to the benchwith a cane and his service dog, Radar. Heis the only blind judge in Florida. He alsoasked to be transferred to the juvenile divi-sion to improve the way that the systemhandles delinquency and dependency cases.Judge Donahey serves on the board ofdirectors at the Watson Clinic for the VisuallyImpaired in Pinellas.In MemoriamW. Rogers Turner ’61 retired as a NinthJudicial Circuit court judge in January 2003after 34 years on the bench. He was firstelected to the bench in November 1968. Heplans to return as a senior judge. While onthe bench, he handled cases in every division except juvenile. He plans to spend moretime with his first grandchild, Evelyn Rose.William A. Dicus ’49Aug. 22, 2001, Dunedin, Fla.John R. Blue ’63 retired as a SecondDistrict Court of Appeal judge on Jan. 31.Judge Blue was appointed to the Court in1992 and served as its chief judge prior tohis retirement. He has joined the law firm ofCarlton Fields P.A.Luther M. Taylor ’63Dec. 12, 2002, Palm Beach, Fla.Paul B. Steinberg ’63 has become thepresident-elect of the American TechnionSociety South Florida Chapter. The AmericanTechnion is an American organization supporting higher education in Israel. Mr.Steinberg served as a Florida Senator from1972 to 1982.Joseph P. D’Alessandro ’64 retired as the20th Judicial Circuit State Attorney aftermore than 33 years in office. GovernorClaude Kirk appointed him as an assistantstate attorney for Lee County in 1967 andas the first state attorney for the newly created 20th Judicial Circuit in 1969.Howard P. Ross ’64, a shareholder in the St.Petersburg firm of Battaglia, Ross, Dicus &Wein P.A., was recently named chair-elect ofthe St. Petersburg Chamber of Commerce. Hecurrently serves as dean for the Chamber’sEntrepreneurial Academy. Mr. Ross practicesin the areas of complex business litigationand business transactional law.J. Bert Grandoff ’65 has been namedpresident-elect of the American College ofConstruction Lawyers at its recent meetingat LaCosta, Carlsbad, Calif.
