Studbook DescriptionScopeThis studbook database includes all known specimens of Amur (also known as Siberian) tigers held in North Americanfacilities with lineages traceable back to wild-caught tigers, beginning with imports into the U.S. in the 1930s andcurrent through 1 June 2013. Privately owned tigers with unknown or unverified pedigrees are not included either inthis regional studbook or in the international studbook. There is only one tiger with unknown parents in the regionalstudbook (SB 1163); this tiger is believed to be an Amur tiger unrelated to other specimens in the studbook and has noliving descendants in the managed SSP population.ConventionsThe International Tiger Studbook is maintained by Peter Müller through Zoo Leipzig, Germany. International studbooknumbers are used here as permanent regional studbook numbers. When necessary, temporary studbook numbers(prefaced with “T”) are assigned until international studbook numbers are known.Wild-caught tigers are assumed to be unrelated except for those instances when sets of cubs are captured on the samedate and location (see Parental Assumptions below). If an animal is estimated to be an adult at capture, then rearingtype is assumed to be parent-reared.Date estimates generally follow conventions outlined in the Guidelines for Data Entry and Maintenance of NorthAmerican Regional Studbooks. Given no other information, the age of wild-caught tigers at capture was estimated to beone year. Unknown capture dates are estimated to have occurred two weeks before the first known transfer. Transferdates are recorded as the date on which a specimen arrives at the receiving institution.Data Field DescriptionsThe following standard SPARKS data fields are used:Studbook #: Unique number assigned to each individual in the studbookSex: M male; F female; U unknown sexBirth Date: Animal’s birth date (‘ ’ indicates an estimated date; ? indicates date is unknown)Sire/Dam: SB#s for animal’s sire and dam. WILD tiger that never entered captivity; wild-caught tigers haveWILD parents; UNK identity of parent is unknown; MULT more than one possible sire or damLocation: Institution holding the tiger at the time (Ltf lost to follow-up; fate subsequent to that date is unknown)Date: Date on which the event occurred (‘ ’ indicates an estimated date)Local ID: Accession or other identification number assigned by the institution (institution specific)Event: Capture, birth, transfer, death, or releaseRearing: Parent, hand, foster, peer, supplemental, none (stillbirths), unknownName: House name at the institution (may be institution specific)Status: SSP part of SSP population; EXCL permanent non-breeder/excluded from SSP genetic analysisParental AssumptionsTwo pairs of tiger cubs were wild-caught at a young age and are known or assumed to be siblings. For these specimens, the parents have been designated as follows to indicate this relationship:WILD1/WILD2: Parents of 3622 and 3623, brought in as wild-caught cubs and believed to be littermates.WILD3/WILD4: Parents of 3957 and 3958, brought in as wild-caught littermates upon dam’s death.Hybridization IssuesThis regional studbook (and the international studbook) contain records of several tigers now thought to be hybridizedwith Bengal tigers as evidenced by the production of white cubs at Seoul Zoo upon inbreeding of this line. SB 1915born at CENTERHIL is believed to have carried the Bengal white coat allele. Thus, offspring SB 2537 and 2538, andF2 tigers SB 2882-85 and SB 2961-63, are also considered to be hybridized. These tigers are now dead with nodescendents in North America, with the exception of SB 5566 and 5565 recently imported from the Seoul Zoo. Thesetigers are italicized in the studbook report.1

Status in the WildThe Amur tiger (Panthera tigris altaica), also known as the Siberian tiger, is one of six remaining tiger subspecies(three other subspecies went extinct in the last century). As a subspecies, the Amur tiger is generally the largest, asmight be expected for a northern, cold climate taxon; however, there is significant morphological variation amongindividuals within each tiger subspecies.Listed as Endangered by the IUCN Red List, wild Amur tigers primarily occur in the Russian Far East in the PrimorskyKrai region, although a few individuals may live in northern China and North Korea. The population is believed tohave gone through a severe bottleneck of 20-30 individuals in the 1930s, and exhibits low genetic variation comparedto other tiger subspecies. Molecular studies suggest that the global captive Amur tiger population now contains greatergenetic variation than the wild population (Russello et al. 2004; Luo et al. 2010).Poaching of tigers and their prey remain the primary threat to wild Amur tiger populations, although habitat loss andassociated activities (e.g., roads, fires) are also a threat. Anti-poaching and other conservation efforts enabled thepopulation to expand to 400-500 tigers by 2005. Monitoring efforts and partial surveys, however, suggest a populationdecline in recent years. In the winter of 2010 Wildlife Conservation Society (WCS) researchers reported a suddenchange in the behavior of several radio-collared tigers, postulating the possible existence of a disease, possibly caninedistemper, affecting hunting ability and resulting in increased tiger-human conflicts and associated mortalities. There isconcern that disease-related mortality combined with existing poaching losses may result in significant risk for the wildpopulation. Conservation efforts continue, including anti-poaching activities, increased law enforcement, diseasemonitoring, and monitoring of tiger populations. The AZA Tiger SSP’s Tiger Campaign currently supports severalWCS tiger conservation projects in Russia. For more information, see:Chapron, C., D. G. Miquelle, A. Lambert, J. M. Goodrich, S. Status of the North American Captive PopulationThere are currently 155 (62.93) Amur tigers registered asliving in 52 North American zoos, all but 5 of which aremaintained in AZA institutions and are managed as part ofthe SSP. Two (0.2) of these tigers are considered to besubspecific hybrids (see p.1, Hybridization Issues). The North American Amur tiger population began withimports in the 1930-1960s, and grew substantially in the1960s. The population peaked around 230 tigers when theTiger SSP was established in 1981. Since then the NorthAmerican population has been slowly managed to meet thetarget population size of 150 individuals for the SSP population. The current sex ratio is female-biased, although the sex ratio hasfluctuated over the past few decades. The current SSP population is genetically derived from 57 foundersand represents about 96.2% gene diversity. Inbreeding levels are low, with an average inbreeding coefficient of 0.0109. Stochasticprojections suggest that the population can maintain about 91% genediversity for 100 years under current population managementstrategies. The WAZA Amur Tiger Global Species Management Plan (GSMP)was established in 2012 and held its first meeting in May 2013.Wild-caught Amur tigers (e.g., orphaned cubs, unreleaseable conflict tigers) periodically enter the EARAZA tigerprogram and provide opportunities for occasional genetic supplementation of the Amur tiger ex situ global andregional populations. For more detailed demographic and genetic population information, see the most current Population Analysis andBreeding Plan for the Amur Tiger Species Survival Plan, produced annually and available on the AZA website.Additional Amur Tiger Studbooks / Management ProgramsThis studbook represents the North American Regional Amur Tiger Studbook maintained under the Association ofZoos and Aquariums (AZA), and in conjunction with the AZA Amur Tiger Species Survival Plan (SSP), coordinatedby Tara Harris, Minnesota Zoo.
