DISTINGUISHED FACULTY SCHOLAR AWARDThis award was established by Manuchair Ebadi, ’60, Ph.D., in 1998 to honorDelta W. Gier, Ph.D., former chair of the Department of Chemistry who servedPark from 1948 to 1990. The award pays tribute to a faculty member who showsevidence of commitment to high standards of excellence in the area of scholarship:teaching, discovery, integration and/or service. The recipient also shows effective andinnovative connections between teaching and research, especially by undergraduatestudent involvement and participation. HONORS ACADEMYThe Honors Academy is a special program for which formal application is required.The Academy is open to undergraduate students from all disciplines. Incomingfreshmen, current students, and transfer students with a cumulative GPA of 3.75and an ACT score of at least 28 can apply for admission. The Honors Academy seeksstudents who desire to learn not only for self-satisfaction, but also as a means throughwhich they may contribute to their campus, city, national, and global communities insupport of the University and Academy mission statements. The program is designedto challenge academically well prepared students while introducing and reinforcingthe experiential learning outcomes Park University’s Literacies. The fund continues to grow throughgifts from members of the Alumni Association and friends of Park University. CEREMONIAL SYMBOLSPresidential MedallionThere have been two presidential medallionsin the history of Park University. The first,bestowed upon Acting President H. MeltonMohler by the student council in 1964, is apolished brass cross pattée with a sextant,representing the navigational mission ofthe president to guide the University, in thecenter. The insignia is surrounded by two redand yellow concentric circles and the wordsFides et Labor, the University’s motto. Thepresidential medallion of today, presented inApril 2002 to President Beverley Byers-Pevitts,Ph.D., is made of gold-plated bronze, withthe names and dates of tenure of each formerpresident engraved on the links of the chain.The medallion symbolizes the president’sresponsibility for the welfare of the institution.Ceremonial MaceThe ceremonial mace is among the oldestsymbols of authority. Once used as weaponsby royal bodyguards to protect kings, cities andparliaments eventually began using them, andthe heads of medieval universities later followedsuit. In academia today, the ceremonial macehas become one of the treasured symbols ofoffice and is representative of the power of aninstitution. Park University’s 42-inch ceremonialmace was commissioned by President GregGunderson, Ph.D., in 2017. In the centerof the mace head is Park University’s MackayHall clock tower and the school motto, Fideset Labor. The antique bronze, octagon-shapedplatform that supports the mace head has acherry wood upper disk and a lower disc madewith limestone mined from Park University’sParkville Campus, serving as a representation ofPark University’s strong foundation.- 20 -
