Wigrnans will assume hisnew post in December.Wigrnans, who has been among th 100 permanent staff physicists at theEuropean center since 1984, is intematiom lly recognized for his expertise in particle·physics."I see a new era for physics at Texas Tech with Wigrnans' appointment topursue a most fundamental area of physics. The timing is particularly good because ofthe construction of the Superconducting Super Collider," said Walter Borst, Ph.D.,chairman of the department of physics at Texas Tech.Wigrnans specializes in the physics of detectors for ultra-high energy particles.Borst said Wigrnans is recognized world-wide for his work in detector calorimetry, themeasurement of the energy a.I) the kinds of particles that come from the interactionregion of the super collider when two proton beams J Ollide nead-on.Borst headed the committee that conducted an international search and selectedWigrnans as the top candidate for the post.Borst said Wigrnans' appointment is significant because Texas Tech isestablishing a new program in experimental particle physics. Wigrnans will be involvedin selecting additional faculty members, graduate research assistants and post-doctoralfellows for the new program.Wigrnans received his doctorate in physics in 1975 from the Free University ofAmsterdam in Holland. He served from 1976 to 1984 as the senior staff physicist atthe Nuclear Physics Institute in Amsterdam. The Bucy Chair was established in the department of physics at Texas Tech in1990. Too much heat can be a serious or evenfatal health hazard, according to Anthony Way, M.D., of the TTHSC department ofpreventive medicine and community health. Heat stroke, he said, is the most serioushealth problem for workers in hot environitients. The hazard is always life-threateningbecause the person's temperature rises so higp that brain damage and death can resultif the body isn't cooled immediately. Symptoms of heat stroke include red, bluish ormottled skin, reduced sweating, mental confusion, delirium, chills, nausea anddizziness. If the worker is not removed from the heat, Way said, convulsions, comaand possible death may occur. Heat stroke and other heat-related illnesses can beprevented by concentrating on proper work clothing, employee training, education andenvironmental controls. Through increased knowledge of potential health hazardsfrom heat exposure, working conditions can be improved and the incidence of heatrelated illnesses reduced.
