The Society of Thoracic Radiology hosts its 36th Annual Meeting March 4-7, 2018 at the new Fairmont Austin,in Austin, Texas. The program committee, headed by President-Elect Cristopher Meyer, MD, in collaboration withEducational Committee Chair, Jeffrey Kanne, MD has designed an outstanding, comprehensive postgraduate radiologycourse in cardiothoracic imaging. The course curriculum covers a variety of cardiothoracic imaging topics including lung cancer screening, diffuse lungdiseases, quantitative imaging, big data and deep learning, pulmonary infections, oncologic imaging and interventionalmanagement, evidence-based imaging and educational topics, cardiothoracic emergencies, and cardiovascular imaging.Self-assessment modules (SAMs) will provide important opportunities for maintenance of certification and life-longlearning needs.Highlights of the 2018 meeting include: The Benjamin Felson Memorial Lecture, “IgG4 Related Disease,” will be given by Jay Ryu, MD, Professor ofPulmonary and Critical Care Medicine, Mayo Clinic Rochester.president The Gordon Gamsu Lecture, “Radiation Induced Lung Injury: Detecting Recurrence and Texture Analysis,” willbe given by David Palma, MD, MSc, PhD, FRCPC, Assistant Professor, Schulich School of Medicine & Dentistry,University of Western Ontario. The Scanlon Lecture, “Emerging and Recurring Occupational Lung Disease in the 21st Century,” will be given byJames Lockey, MD, Professor of Occupational, Environmental and Pulmonary Medicine, University of Cincinnati. There will be a session hosted by Geoffrey Rubin, MD, entitled, “Cardiothoracic Conundrums: Cases that Amazeand Inform.” The cases will be solicited from the STR members and highlight diagnostic dilemmas or managementchallenges. The session will focus on learning from our collective mistakes by sharing them in a relaxed andentertaining format.from the Terrance Healy, MD, and the Awards Committee will identify several of the best posters that will be displayed atthe meeting, and the authors of those posters will present their topics in 10-minute talks on Wednesday morning. The new Fairmont Austin is a towering icon within the vibrant Central Business District. COURSE DESCRIPTIONThoracic Imaging 2018 is the 36th AnnualMeeting and Postgraduate Course of the Societyof Thoracic Radiology. This 4-day course willfeature internationally recognized experts on thesubjects of imaging of the lungs, heart, thoracicvasculature, mediastinum, and pleura.FELSON LECTURE:IgG4 Related DiseaseJay Ryu, MDGAMSU LECTURE:Radiation Induced Lung Injury:Detecting Recurrence and Texture AnalysisDavid Palma, MDSCANLON SYMPOSIUM:Emerging and Recurring Occupational LungDisease in the 21st CenturyJames Lockey, MDACCREDITATION INFORMATIONCOURSE OBJECTIVESThe Society of Thoracic Radiology is accredited by theAccreditation Council for Continuing Medical Educationto sponsor continuing medical education for physicians.1. List basic concepts in imaging interpretation includingpitfalls, anatomic variants, and frequently missed diagnoses.2. Summarize the role of imaging in the assessment of cardiacdisease, including diseases of the coronary arteries andgreat vessels of the thorax. The Society of Thoracic Radiology (STR) designates this liveactivity for a maximum of 30.25 AMA PRA Category 1CreditsTM Physicians should claim only credit commensuratewith the extent of their participation in the activity.3. Define the role of imaging in the screening, diagnosis, evaluation, and management of patients with lung nodules.FOUR SELF-ASSESSMENTMODULES (SAM)4. Explain the clinical and radiological evaluation andmanagement strategies of a solitary pulmonary nodule, including the subsolid lesion.Certified by the American Board of RadiologySTATEMENT OF NEED5. Illustrate current and emerging applications in radiography, computed tomography (CT), magnetic resonance (MR)imaging, and positron emission tomography (PET) as theyrelate to the evaluation and management of thoracic diseases.Radiologists and practitioners with an interest in the science andpractice of cardiothoracic imaging need to acquire comprehensiveknowledge of the diagnosis, imaging, and management of affectedpatients to achieve excellence in delivery of care.6. Summarize a practical and multidisciplinary approach tothe assessment and management of diffuse lung diseases.TARGET AUDIENCEThis course is designed for cardiothoracic radiologists, diagnosticradiologists, pulmonary medicine specialists, cardiothoracicsurgeons, and fellows and residents with an interest incardiothoracic imaging. Because of the prevalence of diseases ofthe chest in the general population, the course will also be ofvalue to internists and family physicians.7. Define current issues in infectious diseases of the chest.8. Discuss the current status of interventional proceduresof the chest and spectrum of post-treatment changes inthe thorax.9. Apply basic strategies for the interpretation and managementof mediastinal abnormalities.8
