The BSN faculty determined that the Essentials ofBaccalaureate Education for Professional Nursing Practice (AACN, 2008) best reflects thefuture professional nursing role. The University and nursing leaders recognize the myriad ofchanges taking place in health care. Patient safety, evidence-based practice and informatics arejust a few of the areas receiving intense focus. Nurses are uniquely positioned to play a key rolein transforming health care delivery and influencing health care policy. In addition, nursingleaders and Midway University Nursing faculty acknowledge the importance of educating nursesto care for the increasing number of older adults. The Essentials framework was first introduced and adopted by the American Associationof Colleges of Nursing in 1998 with a revision in 2008. The Essentials document emphasizessuch concepts as patient-centered care, interprofessional teams, evidence-based practice, qualityimprovement, patient safety, informatics, clinical reasoning/critical thinking, genetics and3

genomics, cultural sensitivity, professionalism, and practice across the lifespan in an everchanging and complex healthcare environment. The Essentials document meets the Institute ofMedicine’s recommendations for core knowledge needed for all healthcare professionals(AACN, 2008)The nine Essentials are: Essentials I: Liberal Education for Baccalaureate Generalist Nursing Practiceo A solid base in liberal education provides the cornerstone for the practice andeducation of nurses. Essential II: Basic Organizational and Systems Leadership for Quality Care andPatient Safetyo Knowledge and skills in leadership, quality improvement, and patient safety arenecessary to provide high quality health care. Essential III: Scholarship for Evidence Based Practiceo Professional nursing practice is grounded in the translation of current evidence intoone’s practice. Essential IV: Information Management and Application of Patient CareTechnologyo Knowledge and skills in information management and patient care technology arecritical in the delivery of quality patient care. Essential V: Health Care Policy, Finance, and Regulatory Environmentso Healthcare policies, including financial and regulatory, directly and indirectlyinfluences the nature and functioning of the healthcare system and thereby areimportant considerations in professional nursing practice. Essential VI: Interprofessional Communication and Collaboration for ImprovingPatient Health Outcomeso Communication and collaboration among healthcare professionals are critical todelivering high quality and safe patient care. Essential VII: Clinical Prevention and Population Healtho Health promotion and disease prevention at the individual and population level arenecessary to improve population health and are important components ofbaccalaureate generalist nursing practice Essential VIII: Professionalism and Professional Valueso Professionalism and the inherent values of altruism, autonomy, human dignity, integrity, and social justice are fundamental to the discipline of nursing. Essential IX: Baccalaureate Generalist Nursing Practiceo The baccalaureate-graduate nurse is prepared to practice with patients, includingindividuals, families, groups, communities and populations across the lifespan andacross the continuum of healthcare environments.o The baccalaureate graduate understands and respects the variations of care, theincreased complexity, and the increased use of healthcare resources inherent in caringfor patients. The prelicensure QSEN competencies are: Patient-Centered Careo Recognize the patient or designee as the source of control and full partner in4

providing compassionate and coordinated care based on respect for patient’spreferences, values, and needs. Teamwork and Collaborationo Function effectively within nursing and inter-professional teams, fostering opencommunication, mutual respect, and shared decision-making to achieve qualitypatient care.Evidence-Based Practiceo Integrate best current evidence with clinical expertise and patient/family preferencesand values for the delivery of optimal health care.Quality Improvemento Use data to monitor the outcomes of care processes and use improvement methods todesign and test changes to continuously improve the quality and safety of health caresystems.Safetyo Minimizes risk of harm to patients and providers through both system effectivenessand individual performance.Informaticso Use information and technology to communicate, manage knowledge, mitigate error, and support decision making. The curriculum encourages students to think in greater depth, to question preconceivednotions and entertain dialogue among their peers and faculty about the complex theoretical andconceptual basis for patient care. Course work in the BSN program is built upon the technicalknowledge of the practicing nurse and the liberal arts and sciences. Nursing courses provide thestudent with theoretical and clinical content for implementation of therapeutic nursinginterventions, communication, application of research evidence, and critical thinking.Further, this program of study is designed to prepare students to address key issuesconcerning gender, sexual orientations, ethnicity, race, religion, socio-economic status and otherspecial populations as well as to involve students in rigorous intellectual endeavors. Providing afoundation for graduate study, the emphasis of study encompasses the development of criticalthinking, independent decision-making, creative problem-solving abilities, refinement of writtenand verbal communication, self-sufficiency, leadership behaviors, moral and ethical insights, andactive professional commitments. The principle of Adult Learning Theory is utilized throughout the curriculum, becauselearning is a life-long process in which the learner acquires new knowledge, skills, understanding, and attitudes. Learning is an interactive process between the learner and theenvironment. How the student learns varies greatly in rate of learning and style, requiring avariety of teaching/learning strategies and activities to enhance the process. Learning is notdirectly observed, but can in part be inferred from behavior changes which occur as a result ofexperience (Knowles, Holton, & Swanson, 2014).In the learning process, the student assumes the autonomy inherent in the professionalrole and accepts its attendant accountability. A willingness to be receptive to new experiences in5

often unfamiliar and unpredictable settings is essential in the socialization to expandedprofessional roles. The baccalaureate learner fosters interdisciplinary collaboration in planning andcoordinating high quality health care to individuals, families, and communities. Becauselearning is a life-long process, a foundation must be developed to facilitate continuing selfdevelopment. Self-development implies an openness to diversity, a willingness to change, andan ability to incorporate new knowledge and understanding into one's value system.Baccalaureate education lays the foundation for graduate nursing education and continuing lifelong learning.American Association of Colleges of Nursing.
