Tolman, Ph. D.In the course of a genealogical study of history, a pervasive and recurring theme is thevigorous, sometimes brutal persecution of non-Catholics by Catholic true-believers. It is amajor motivation for the move of families from one location to another. This essay concernsone of these Protestant families that fled France after revocation of the Edict of Nantes in 1685that had protected to some degree Protestants in France (called Huguenots). Those that fled toAmerica first had to proceed to England in order to obtain permission for the move to America. After their residence in England for a time King William sent in 1699 a group of over 500Huguenots under the leadership of the Marquis de la Muce to Gloucester County, Virginia (fromthe recording of children’s births in Abington Parish); this group included Jean deJarnat.1,2DeJarnat implies that the family belonged to the French nobility. The family of Jean deJarno/Jarnaud/Jarneot occupied a fortress near Poitiers as early as 1454 and acquired land in LaSeguiniere (near Cholet between Nantes and La Rochelle) at that time.3This Huguenot immigrant Jean deJarnatt married a Mary Mumford, a Virginian of GloucesterCounty in 1703 and raised a large family.4 There is no record of Jean ever leaving GloucesterCounty; his widow moved to Prince Edward County to live with her dau Elizabeth after his1Frost, Earl C. and May (Miller) DeJarnette and Allied Families in America (Redwood City, California:Pacific Coast Publishers, 1954) some sources; hereafter Frost.2Bell, John M. ‘From French Huguenots to Kentuckians’ in Kentucky Ancestors: Genealogical Quarterlyof the Kentucky Historical Society, Vol. 39, no. 1 (autumn 2003), pp. 7-12 (some sources), it focussesmostly on Elias’ descendants; hereafter Bell.3Frost, vii4Davis, Virginia Lee Hutcheson Tidewater Virginia Families Chapter 11, Gen 9 ‘Jean de Jarnat’(Baltimore, MD: Genealogical Publishing Co. Little is also known of the life of the third child, a daughter Mary.7The fourth child Daniel has not received a lot of genealogical attention; he and his descendantsare the subject of this essay. Daniel Sr. died in Nottaway Parish in Prince Edward County; hischildren included a son Daniel Jr. who was an itinerant carpenter—he married late eventuallysettling in eastern Kentucky as one of the first pioneers. The other (younger) children of Jeanand Mary DeJarnatt were Elizabeth,8 Joseph9,10,11,12 (settled Caroline County, Virginia) andEllenor13 (settled Prince Edward County); they are well studied and all three had manydescendants. The Frost genealogy (note 1) is most comprehensive genealogical source for allchildren of Jean and Mary. Some histories or family trees14 have an additional child ‘Mumford’ for Jean and Mary, somesay born abt 170015 others 1723—there is no actual birth record. It strains credulity that if theDeJarnats had a child out of wedlock in 1700, Mary Mumford would hardly have named himMumford Mumford. A son Mumford b. 1723 cannot be ruled out, but no sources are availableto substantiate his birth/baptism. A more reasonable explanation is put forth in the Torrancehistory16 of the Dejarnett family published in the William and Mary Quarterly. This history cites(p. 146) the Virginia Land Patents 1623-1774 where a Mumford Dejarnett was granted 400acres in Amelia County on Mountain Creek; this is the only citation naming a Mumford5Mathews, Mary Hodnett, from the notes of Blandford Towler Anderson (transcribed by TommyGoodwin), ‘Genealogy of the DeJarnette Family’(www.rootsweb.ancestry.com/ vapittsy/DeJarnettgen.html); ms 6pp; useful sources (accessed 26 May2017) hereafter Mathews.6Bell7See below, child 48Torrance, William Clayton Genealogies of Virginia Families (from the William and Mary Quarterly, Vol.25) ‘McGeehee Family in Virginia’ (Baltimore, MD: Genealogical Publishing Co. This is further clarified in the 1754 will of Daniel Dejarnett (1713-1754, a son ofJean and Mary Dejarnett) of Nottaway Parish, Prince Edward County devising to son Mumford400 acres on Mountain Creek and an another parcel of 400 acres to his brother Daniel (Jr.)along with smith’s tools. The only argument against this explanation is that Mumford wouldonly have been abt 5 yrs old at the time the patent was granted.17 This author has found noother evidence of a Mumford DeJarnat born in the 1700-1725 time period in the record.GENEALOGICAL SUMMARYGeneration One18,191. Jean/John de Jarnat,French Huguenot, was born abt 1680 at La Rochelle, Manche,Basse-Normandie, France and probably died abt 1720 at Gloucester County, Virginia. He wasthe son of Samuel DeJarnette (b.1640) of Poitiers, Vienne, Poitou-Charentes, France. There is afamily cenotaph near Frog Level, Virginia in the forest off route 301 that has interestingbiographical details.20 The Gloucester County records were completely destroyed in the CivilWar reducing greatly the amount of detail available about this family.Jean petitioned for naturalization in 1705.21 He married22 abt 1703 Mary Mumford daughterof Edward and Mary (Watkins) Mumford of Gloucester County, Virginia.23 The immigrantMumford was named Thomas (originally from Yorkshire, England); he apparently was acompanion of Captain John Smith on his second voyage to Jamestown before 1608.24 Hisprobable gdau Mary was born 1683 of Gloucester County and died 1765 at Prince EdwardCounty, Virginia. After Jean/John’s death she moved to Prince Edward County with herdaughter Eleanor DeJarnette McGehee.Jean and Mary (Mumford) DeJarnette had seven children all born/baptised and, except asnoted, are recorded in the Abington Parish, Gloucester, Virginia (Dejurner).25,2617Davis Gen 9; Daniel Sr. died at age 41—perhaps he foresaw this and made arrangements for thefuture of his sons.18Davis Gen 9.19Ancestry Family Trees: ‘Tom Pinkston and Lucile Hodnett Family Tree’, tree 3176659—search MemberDirectory for owner: bbarker80; some sources (accessed 26 May 2017); of the more than 20 Dejarnettetrees on ancestry, this one appears to be the best sourced, hereafter Pinkston/Hodnett Tree.20Cf the Pinkston/Hodnett Tree for more details and transcription (accessed 26 May 2017).21Frost, 122U.S. and International Marriage Records 1560-1900; online at Ancestry.com (accessed 26 May 2017).23Boddie, John Bennett Virginia Historical Genealogies (Baltimore, Maryland: Genealogical Publ.
