Thatcrab wants to get in your crab pot and geta free meal. You have to make it easy forthat crab to enter the pot. If the crab getsto the entrance and has to jockey aroundto get in, he will go elsewhere for a freemeal. It only makes common sense thatthe easier for the crab to enter the pot, themore crab you will catch.Nobody will ever convince me that theshape of the pot make a difference. I usethe Danielson pot CTO3R which is anoctagon pot. Before I used that pot, I wasusing the inexpensive FTC Danielsonpot. The only thing that those two potshave in common is the width of theentrance doors. Both crab pots caught melimits of crab on a regular basis. There are three crab pots that Irecommend that meet the 10”-11” gatecriteria: Danielson CTO3R (Click Hereto See), Danielson FTC (Click Here toSee), and the Kufa CT110 (Click Here toSee),. The Kufa CT110 is a new pot forthis year. I sell it fully assembled or youcan purchase this pot unassembled. Theunassembled CT100 is much lessexpensive to ship than some of the largerone piece pots.Crab BaitI have extensively used both chicken andsalmon for bait. I can't really tell whichone is the better bait. Both work quitewell. I am not convinced that turkey legsare as good chicken or salmon. One wordof caution when you use salmon: Theheads and tails are not very good bait.Neither has enough flesh to make themsuperior bait. Will they work? Yes, butthere are better choices that I have alreadymentioned. Using as much bait aspossible makes a world of difference inattracting crab over to your pot. Stuff thebait box with as much bait as possible. Iwould also recommend soaking the baitovernight with crab attractant oil.Procure and Ace of Baits both make goodcrab attractants.People are really getting creative atcrabbing different depths. It isinteresting hearing the stories about thedifferent depths that people catch crab at.A customer recently told me this crabbingstory, “I saw a buoy in the channel by HatIsland in 300 feet of water. I pulled thepot up because I thought it was a pot thatdrifted off of Mission Bar. I kept pullingand pulling on an endless length of rope. The pot did not drift off. Whoever put outthe crab pot, intentionally set it in 300 feetof water. The pot was full of giganticDungeness Crab. The next time I wentcrabbing, I set my pots out in the samespot and had the same results.”If you are looking for an inexpensive wayto get started crabbing: I sell theDanielson FTC Crab Pot with 100 feet ofleaded rope, bait bag, harness, buoy andcrab measure for 39.95.Ourcompetitors sell this same set-up for I am not making a case for setting your 59.95.pots in 300 feet of water. Agood rule of thumb is this for setting yourcrab pots: Make sure that you have atleast 25 feet of more rope that it is deep. This is the 2nd biggest reason whycrabbers lose their crab gear: They throwtheir pots into deeper water than theyhave rope attached to their crab pot.Have you done that? It is kind ofhumiliating watching your buoy sink outof sight 10 seconds after you have thrownthe buoy overboard.never a disappointment. At this spot, putyour pots in 60 feet of water. This was the all timerecord dating back to 1970. The 2012season is expected to be another strongreturn.Fishing for Sockeye in a lake is mucheasier than fishing for them in a river. Ina lake, Sockeye strike from aggression orfrom a latent feeding habit. There is onething for certain if you want to get in on“the bite”, you better plan on getting upearly because Sockeye only bite the firsthour of the day. That's real early in July! The Skagit River is going to be the firstplace that anglers will get a crack atcatching these popular sport fish. Thismay prove challenging. However, I amsure that Skagit anglers will quicklycatch on to river fishing for Sockeye. There is a big debate on whether Sockeyeactually bite/strike at a fishing lure in ariver environment. I will let you decidethat.I got my first experience fishing Sockeyein a lake on Lake Washington. Iremember that it was quite a few yearsbefore anglers got real adept at catchingthese critters in the lake. when I firstfished Lake Washington, I was using asize #0 Les Davis Dodger/Chrome Prismwith a chrome U20 Flatfish that I paintedwith red spots. This rig was actuallyquite good. When the limit was 4Sockeye one year, we had no troublecatching a limit of 12 Sockeye for threeof us.In Alaskan Rivers the preferred methodfor catching Sockeye is with a five footleader, a red yarn ball and a redGamakatsu hook. Not long after that, it was discovered thata plain red hook trolled behind a #0Be careful, Washington State law states Chrome prism dodger worked about asthat the hook cannot be more than ¾” good as anything. Later, I discoveredfrom the tip of the hook to the shank of putting a red Power Bait Egg made thatthe hook (the gap). For weight, you can rig even more effective. I discovereduse ¼” pencil lead or a slinky. Use the that while fishing Sockeye in Lakeappropriate amount of weight to gently Wenatchee. Through the years, I havebump to bottom of the river. Youhave to have the ability to trollbetween .5 and 1.5 mph. It isimpossible to troll that slowly withouta 10 horse kicker motor or an electrictrolling motor. I just can't emphasizeenough how critical this is!At daylight the fish will be at 30 feetdeep.
