Backup is broken and needs a revolution to fix it Most big corporations have their backup houses well in order; theycan afford high-end SANs powered by top disk arrays. They oftenhave multi-tier backup and disaster recovery systems in place. Theyhave the money to buy more space when they start to run out,and the smartest ones are using the cloud as an additional layer ofsecurity. Many small to mid-sized businesses and similar organizations like non-profits and schools aren’t so wealthy orprepared. Few can keep pace with the growth of storage and far too many lack proper policies or employeeswith enough experience and time to do the job properly. They struggle with substandard equipment anddon’t know if their backups will work when the time comes to restore the data.A catastrophic failure can put them out of business faster than you can ever imagine. There’s a vast need for efficient, affordable data backup that satisfies enterprises and smallbusinesses alike. The current model isn’t cutting it.FOLLOW US & SHAREBackup is Broken 3

Backup is BrokenDon’t believe backup is broken? Then maybe you should listen to Dave Russell, the Vice President of storagetechnologies and strategies for research giant Gartner. He penned the presentation “The Broken State ofBackup”.Russell argues that companies “should expect to fundamentally change their backup/recovery investmentstrategies.” He supports his claim by noting today’s most common issues, including: backup failures andtechnology obsolescence. Why Gartner thinks backup is broken:Too much faith in backupsLack of consistent testing and verificationBackup failuresAge and deterioration of mediaTechnology obsolescenceWhat are the obstacles to efficient backup?Businesses going for long stretches between backups, meaning files are outdated at the timeof backupReliance on only one tier of backup, posing problem if it failsMultiple technologies in use which don’t necessarily integrateIssues backing up the virtual machines being addedAvailability needing to be maintained at historically high levels to satisfy increasinglyimpatient customersIncrease in compliance standards that must be adhered toBackup is slow and unreliableEven when a backup seems to go fine, it may well have failed. According to Gartner, in the average datacenter, backups only succeed around 85% of the time. In the average remote office, that drops to 75%.Unfortunately, many failures aren’t discovered until the data needs to be restored.Again, you need a revolution to solve your customers’ backup issues – one that involves backing up theirdata in the cloud, paired with exceptionally fast backup software.Backup speed is critical to help you deliver the best possible service to your customers.FOLLOW US & SHAREBackup is Broken 4

Restoration RevolutionWith MAX Backup, there are several ways to restore a server that irrevocably lost all its data due to acatastrophic crash, natural disaster or theft. If data recovery isn’t time-sensitive, a physical disk containing thedata can be mailed out.But waiting isn’t always the optimum choice for your customers. In most cases, they will want you to restorehigh-priority data from the cloud to ensure critical operations are up and running quickly. Then, lower-priorityfiles can either be shipped physically or restored from the cloud. MAX Backup ensures a fast return ofoperations by quickly restoring Exchange – which is the lifeblood for many companies – and recovering coreapplications. The process is often completed before workers notice there’s a problem. In fact, you can fine-tune restores on behalf of your customers, starting as small as just one file, and movingup to a directory, group of files, or a complete restore. For files so important they just can’t wait for a restore,MAX Backup offers a virtual drive where you can retrieve files from a backup without going through arestoration process. End users can even use the virtual drive to get back their own lost files, a form of selfservice that appeals to you as a service provider and end users alike. Even better, this self-service restore worksright from Windows Explorer.Recovery is fast with MAX Backup because only priority data is coming back right away. The data has alreadybeen compressed to 70% of its original size, using the technology’s deep deduplication technique.FOLLOW US & SHAREBackup is Broken 5

Disk-To-Disk-To-Cloud (D2D2C)Top storage experts believe the right way to do backup is disk-to-disk-to-cloud (D2D2C). Here, you back upyour primary disk – usually a server but it could be a client – to a backup disk. There is a secondary backup tierin the cloud. The beauty of this approach is that you don’t have to buy and manage the actual infrastructurefor the second tier. With MAX Backup’s Local Speed Vault feature, there are a number of ways to implement D2D2C withoutincurring a lot of extra software fees. Local Speed Vault simultaneously places backup data on a local disk andthe cloud. Locally, the data can reside on a NAS, network share, or even a client computer. Each case offersfast local access. In the event of a recovery, MAX Backup will figure out the best place to restore data from, whether from thecloud store or locally over the LAN.Think FreshThe status quo has ruled the storage roost too long. Nimble companies like MAXfocus are moving the needlewith ultra-high performance, D2D2C, and the efficiencies that come from deep deduplication. In Gartner’s analysis, key innovations have indeed recently come from more agile players.Key innovations in backup/recovery tools:Increased efficiencyScalabilitySuccessful backupSuccessful restoresEasy management & upgradesFOLLOW US & SHAREBackup is Broken 6

ConclusionAt the core, the problem with providing backup services tobusinesses is there are too many moving parts: pieces need to bebought, configured, managed and upgraded. Since backupdoesn’t generate revenue like an e-commerce site or customerrelationship management (CRM), making a business case for it hasbeen a challenge. But that logic no longer applies. Fast, secure, reliable backup is now business-critical. Finding the rightarchitecture and vendor partner to help you deliver it as a service in a cloud-based environment is absolutepriority. To find out more visit our website.FOLLOW US & SHAREBackup is Broken 7
