Salish Word Book This book is a co-project of Salish School of Spokane,Whitworth University, and the Spokane Public Libraries. The purpose of this bookis to introduce learners to words and phrases from the four Southern InteriorFSalish languages: n̓ səlxčin̓(Colville-Okanagan), n̓ sélišcn̓ (Spokane-Kalispel),n̓ xaʔm̓ xčín̓ (Wenatchee-Columbian), and sn̓ čic̓úʔum̓ šcn̓ (Coeur d’Alene).Salish itself is a large language familythat includes 29 languages- 22 CoastSalish languages and seven InteriorSalish languages. The seven InteriorSalish languages include threeNorthern Interior Salish languages(Thompson, Lilooet, Shushap) and fourSouthern Interior Salish languages. Theword “Salish” comes into English fromthe Bitterroot Salish people ofMontana. Their name for themselves is“séliš”, meaning Salish people. As aresult of the genocide waged againstNative American people, all 29 Salishlanguages are either critically endangered or are extinct. Salish School of Spokaneand others are now working to preserve and revitalize Salish languages. For each theme listed below, we show a picture of something and then list theFSalish words for it in each of the four Southern Interior Salish languages: n̓ səlxčin̓(Colville-Okanagan), n̓ sélišcn̓ (Spokane-Kalispel), n̓ xaʔm̓ xčín̓ (WenatcheeColumbian), and sn̓ čic̓úʔum̓ šcn̓ (Coeur d’Alene). The words are color-coded bylanguage. The Salish is followed by an English nimalsweather06.07.08.09.10.food 1class/officeclotheshousefamily
