(Hmm, not sure I’ll be sogung-ho to hike the pali then, but we’ll see.)A Supermoon" occurs when the moon becomes full on the same day as its perigee, the point inthe moon's orbit when it is closest to Earth. The term Supermoon is borrowed from thepseudoscience of astrology but has been adopted by popular culture and astronomers.Supermoons generally appear to be 14% bigger and 30% brighter than other full moons.According to EarthSky, the November 14 Supermoon was only 221,524 miles from Earth. That’sthe closest the moon has been since January 1948. (My calculator says that was 68 years ago!)It was a SUPER moon Palihike with Chris & friends!Aloha from Rovylaine, Leticia, & Martha (Aston Hskpg), Prudelito, Roonie, and Feliciano (SGSGreen Team), and Julian (AOAO Maintenance).Letter in The MailPlease look out for a letter inthe mail from The Associationc/o Destination Maui Inc.(DMI) with regards to theproposed project to replacethe interior door locks, interior doors, and completecertain hallwayimprovements. Aumakua- Family Guardian Spirit Cont’dAloha Po’alima (Friday)Novemapa (November)Continuation on last week’s Aumakua Family Guardian SpiritNote: I have a good friend whose family “Aumakua” (Guardian Spirit) is the Mano(Shark). In my earlier years diving for fish with him, we discarded every 4 th fish wecaught for it was our belief that the “Mano” (shark) was around and would protectus from other predators if we took care of it and fed it. There were times we did seeCourtesy of Nathan Brovellisharks in the water and sometimes very close to us, but we were never harmed.(Bell Services)Another good friend of mine, his “Aumakua” is the “Pu’eo” (Hawaiian Owl). Therewere times on our hiking trips up to the hills on the island of O’ahu, we would seethese beautiful birds. His family believed that these owls were the spirits of theirancestors and in particular, his grandfather and grandmother. It was his grandfatherwho always told him as a child that when the day came, they would return to them asHawaiian Owls in an effort to protect their family. Needless to say, there were twobeautiful Owls (Pu’eo) usually near his home up in the hills. We fed these beautifulThe Hawaiian birds and he even sang a Hawaiian Song whenever we came upon them. “TheAumakua, Guardian Spirit of Hawai’i, is our Hawaiian Culture and it’s our belief”.Coconut TreeThere are many Coconut Tree species in Hawai’i. All except one were brought to Hawai’i bythe Polynesians in their ancient canoes. It is originally native to Australia and Malaysia. The true Hawaiian Coconut Tree is called the “loulu” and it has 19 different types andalmost all are endangered. The Coconut Tree is considered to be one of the most usefultrees in the entire world for almost every part of the Coconut Tree can be used for somepurpose. Hawaiians used the Coconut for food and an emergency source of drinking water.Oil from the meat was used as a cosmetic for skin and hair. Coconut shells were used forspoons, shells, bowls, cups and other containers. The fibrous husks were used to makecord and used in nets and lashings. The leaves were used for roofing and the weavingof baskets, fans, hats, and other goods. The mid-section of the leaves was used to make skewers. The trunkswere used for housing, wooden drums, and canoes. Parts of the Coconut Tree was also used for medicinalpurposes and critical to the ancient Hawaiians. The Coconuts white flesh may be eaten raw or cooked.Coconuts are ripe for eating when they turn yellow or bronze and fall to the ground. Brown or grayish coconutsare too old for eating. Some Coconut Trees can grow up to be more than 100 feet tall. The Coconut is one ofthe largest seeds known to man, and even after floating in the ocean for months, it can still sprout after makinglandfall. Unfortunately, an invasive pest was detected on Oahu a few years ago, one that damages and killsCoconut Trees and other palm trees. It is the Coconut Rhinoceros Beetle which coincidentally was discovered onthe same day the Fire Ant was found on Maui. The beetle has been a major concern forHawai’i since it was first found in Guam in 2007. The Hawai’i Department of Agriculture,The University of Hawai’i, and the United States Military have been working very hard tocombat, control, and kill these 2 pests who have already had a major impact ondestroying many plants and birds in Hawai’i. When I look at a Coconut Tree, I amreminded of all the uses it provided to the daily lives of the early Hawaiians and stilltoday. The bend of a Coconut Tree even during rough winds proves its strength, andwhen it sways from left to right in the trade winds, it reminds me of the hips of a huladancer telling a story to us all.tree kumula austrong ikaikaleaf lautall loihi

There will be substantial noise and dust, particularly at the onset because we will be making cuts intoexisting concrete. A new roof is going on, so that framing and construction will be noisy as well. Our bestestimate is that the last 45 days will be more quiet than the onset because much of the work will be inside, contained, and finishing work. The dates are firm. It's a critical shoulder season window where the job muststart and then be finished before Christmas.Letter to Rental Operators: Effective immediately, to decrease the registration processing time, rentaloperators are required to provide reservation information when submitting reservation requests.
