CROSSe a/yea/Wettit I A 1 NI144,4%.Chuck Goldenberg of the Downsview Weston News writes inhis record column "Little Caesar and the Consuls loom high on theCanadian record scene with a tune called 'Don't Make a Fool OfMe' (Bigland 202) a thumping, raunchy affair with 'good backingfrom the group. The flip, 'Little Heartbreaker' is a slower, shuffleselection and very good possibilities for Ilitsville on both sides."Chuck echoes many reports on this fine production.Sandy Gardiner of the Ottawa Journal brings to our attention thefact that two Canadian records are gaining a great deal of attentioninternationally "Unless You Care" by Vancouverite Terry Blackand "Feel So Pretty" by Toronto's own Shirley Matthews.Rita Pavane, RCA Victor's exciting young Italian songstresswill appear at Toronto Maple Leaf Gardens, Sunday, October 25th,one week after her appearance on the Ed Sullivan Show. The RCA Victor Co. through its Canadian General Manager,George Harrison, have arranged to provide a music library for thestudents of the Montreal Association School for the Blind.Greg Hamon who just released his first single on Bigland"Amelia" is scoring with the good music stations and FM outlets. This could be one of the quiet hits of the year.TERRY BLACK's single "Unless You Care" on Arc Canada hasbeen picked up by Interphon (a division of Vee Jay). Terry will beseen in Toronto on the same bill with Gerry and the Pacemakers,Nov. 1st.We have had many enquiries in answer to our suggestion thatan Association of Canadian Artists be formed (RPM Sept.1.) Forthe Toronto area, Mrs. Sandra Dunn, proprietor of the Club Matadorwill donate the facilities of her club once a month for such aneffort. Now all we need is some enterprising young artist or interested party to start the ball rolling for a membership meeting. WeRPM takes a great deal of pleasure in saluting theCentral Canada Broadcasters Association during theirconvention at NiagaraFalls, October18,19,20.Radio and television play a great part in the lives ofCanadians every day and a fellowship type union ofbroadcasters getting together for discussions suchas the CCBA are viewed with a great deal of interest. From these meetings come many ideas and suggestions that can add to our enjoyment and above allstimulate an interest in our own culture. The friendly relationship enjoyed by our broadcast media and music industry has grown mainly because of a need for each other. The choice of NiagaraFalls for a meeting place can possibly symbolize aneed in the industry, just as Niagara Falls has become an internationally distinctive Canadian symbol, perhaps there, Central Canada's Broadcasters maygive birth to a distinctive Canadian image in radioand television.will be glad to act as an intermediary. This could well set the industry back two years, and onemight ask "Can a responsible radio station, program Canadiancontent safely?" Possibly McAdory has hit the nail on the head,ON THEAIRGO WEST YOUNG MAN, and that's exactly what Chuck Cam -roux is doing. Chuck leaves CHSJ Saint John to become a radiopersonality at CFCO Chatham.Rockin' Robbert (Bob Gibbons) reports a smashing selloutand possibly many can learn from his comments that in a countrywhere it is suggested there is NO Payola, the investment of moneyand time is wasted on a music industry. The article is very thought provoking, and possibly many of usshould take heed of the standards by which product will be judged.Keeping in mind that we are competing against 30 years of experience in recording, and studios that are valued at 500,000 to 750,000. It therefore stands to reason that it will take that muchskill, that much money, and that much time to become competitive.Thepolicies of Canadian stations, and programmers areshow for the Chartbusters on their appearance with CHSJ in Saintstrange, and it is questionable what constitutes a HIT record, and talent. Essentially radio stations are not in the record busi-favorite in the Maritimes.David Lyman of CKY Winnipeg writes to tell us of the recentness, and merely use records as a convenience to programming. TheJohn. Coming up, one big big show starring Bobby Curtola, aappearanceof Gale Garnett at a local nightspot. CKY arrangedfor Gale to meet the Mayor of Winnipeg, Stephen Juba, who in turnpresented Gale with an honorary citizenship in the City of Winnipeg. One of CKY's "Watchables of the Month" Margaret Smithhas been named Miss Manitoba. Another "Watchable" Vone Evanswas named Miss Blue Bomber. Looks like CKY can pick 'em.Don O'Neil, PD at CHEX Peterboro drops a line to let usknow of their switch to the sound of "Good Radio at 980". Theynow extend their good music through the day until 6 p.m. Thentheir newest CHEX-Mate Terry Perks takes over with music foryoung moderns.BettyKennedy, oneofCanada's leading femalecommentators sets a veryinteresting pace. A studyin the easy personal sideof the life of a movie staror the struggle of a Canadian artist on the way upisbroughtoutwithahomespun quality. Bettyentertaininghasbeenrecordindustry should be indeed grateful to radio stations forplaying their records. In view of this article, everyone in the industry might take thenext two weeks to consider the value of continuing in the Canadianmusic business or possibly co forget the whole thing.GARBAGE? TALENT? Then why are American companiesinterested in Canadian artists and Canadian productions? Obviously they are trying to buy our .GARBAGE?.GIVE 52 TIMES A YEAR. RPM continues giving.Write now for SPECIAL GIFT SUBSCRIPTION RATESCOMING SOONa new featureCFRB listeners with herafternoon show for sometime. The stature of herguests is evidenced inher photo with RobertGoulet.Nice to hear from GaryHart at CFSL Weyburn.Gary is experiencing somedifficulty in obtaining Canadian releases. (record companies please"SOUNDING BOARD"JUST NAME IT!WE HAVE IT! ONnote).Cam Finley of CJBQ Belleville informs us of a recently launched popular music show covering the Quinte area. This is a drasticchange from their standard format of adult programming, but it isbeing well received from both a teen and adult point of view. It'sencouraging to hear news of changes such as this. Many who claimto be "family stations" rarely program for the teenager.ONE MAN'S OPINIONIn a recent article in the Toronto Telegram's supplement"After Four", Bob McAdory, disc jockey at CHUM, writes aboutGARBAGE"Garbage! That's What They'd Have Me Play - Pure Garbage". Hegoes on to say "Canadian disc jockeys are getting a little tired ofthe wailing, whining, and moaning of record companies that theyare not promoting Canadian talent". He emphasizes that Canadiandeejays would give preference to a Canadian artist "providing thatthe record is good." And he demands that the record be "goodenough to compete with anything that's produced anywhere." Takinga positive approach he goes on, "This rarely happens."He takes a full swing at the entire Canadian industry with theexception of three records and generalizes "You'd be amazed atsome of the unbelievable garbage that is produced in this country".THE ALBUM TO FIT YOUR FORMAT The Top Stars appear on Capitol - Nat Cole, Al Martino,Nancy Wilson, Glen Gray, Mrs. Mills, Peggy Lee,George Shearing, Stan Kenton, Bobby Darin, Vera Lynn,Buck Owens, Vic Damone -In a comment on Canadian talent he asks comically "This is talent?"AND THERE ARE MORE TO COME - SOON!our stand that records must be judged on their ownmerits. However, the word "garbage" in reference to Canadianrecords might be considered very poor taste. Some may feel thisarticle seems to be designed to undermine the entire industry. Itsuggests that overnight we compete with the world for perfection. To say this article and such thinking might "kill" the industry isFRANKIE LANE, "CANNONBALL" ADDERLEY,BOBBY RYDELL, SHELLY MANNE and others from-We are in complete agreement with these comments which re-emphasizeCAPITOL RECORDS OF CANADA, LTD.an understatement. The word that comes to mind is "murder".3

I consider this quite an honour and thiscolumn will give me a chance to get news to you as soon asit happens . . if not sooner. Although much of what goes onin the, music industry stems from many American productioncentres, New York is regarded as the "heart" of the musicbusiness. I hope you find this column informative. The most talked about record on the scene right nowis "Leader of the Pack" by the Shangri-las. The questionasked most often (even by people who haven't heard therecord) is, "Have you heard the new Shangri-las' record? It's a smash!"Although a lot of American publishers and record producers are finding the going rough because of the Britishcraze, many of them are enjoying their greatest success dueto unexpected releases. Today a publisher prays for a smashin England knowing the record will then be released in theUS. There are American publishers enjoying the success ofThe Beatles, The Animals et al, in a way that would neverhave been possible before.A very talented folk singer by the name of BonnieDobson will be recording shortly for Mercury Records here. Many people think she has the potential of a Joan Baez.Bonnie is a Canadian girl. It's wonderful to realize that records like "On TheStreet Where You Live" by Andy Williams and "Funny Girl"EXTRA THE THINGS IN THIS HOUSEEXTRA WHEN I FALL IN LOVEEXTRA I DON'T KNOWEXTRA WHAT IN THE WORLDEXTRA I WON'T TELLBobby DarinParis SistersSteve AlaimoDovellsTracey Dey(Cap)(Qua)(Spa)(Qua)(Qua)0000CHNSON THE BEACHCKEYCFUNCKRCCHECCKCKSAY YOUC KOMCFCFCKWSCKYLCHSJCHUMCJMEby Barbara Streisand can get played on all the "Top 40"stations and that "Summer Song" by Chad and Jeremy andElvis' "Ask Me" can get exposure on many of the "goodmusic" stations.Don Costa, who travels more than any ten people isvery excited about an LP by Kathy Keegan, soon to be released on his DCP label. Kathy was the first person everto record the song "Good Life". As a result of her record, the song was picked up by other artists."Shindig" was highly praised by the TV critics here, proving that even a show geared at a teenage audience canbe accepted by adults. MAN of theP&P44 oro r.Ed Preston of CHML Hamilton reports his station hasgot the "Fair Lady" bugwith the Columbia release, but alsofinds very interesting the Capitol release of "Rock Swing andDance To My Fair Lady" by The Gallants (recommended forrock stations who would like to program good music but areafraid of losing listeners). Ed also recommends the HarryWEEKGORDONSimeone Choral "Accent On Youth" particularly the "Dum DeDum" cut.Dave Amer from CHFI recommends as very good listen-FREDERICKEEBLEing the new Phyllis Marshall LP "That Girl" on ColumbiaGordon Frederic Keeble has been broadcasting for 30 years. He began in 1934 as a freelance actor and vocalist in Toronto. CFCF rose to greater heights under Keeble. In 1950 he became executive V -P and G.M. of S.W. Caldwell Ltd., in Toronto directing operations. His special interest was closed-circuit television and kine recording. In 1961 CTV Television network was formed and Keeblebecame executive V -P.One of the original members of ACTRA, President of theCCBA, his interest in classical music came naturally, hespent four years studying piano at the Royal Conservatoryof Music under Boris Berlin.EVERYONE'S TALKING ABOUTand the Capitol release of Gordon McRae and Dorothy Kirsten"Kismet". Dave is also impressed with the Smothers Bros.release of "It Must Have Been Something I Said".George Wilson of CKFH finds easy listening with "LoveGoddesses" by Percy Faith on Columbia and "By SpecialRequest" by Trios Los Panchos also on Columbia. Great forprogramming is the new "Buddy Greco On Stage" on Epic and"Kismet" with Gordon McRae, Dorothy Kirsten and RogerWagner Choral.Art Collins, CFRB highly recommends the Capitol release of "Deep Velvet" with George Shearing and the Wood -win Choir, particularly the cuts "Passing By" and "Sentimental Journey". Art is also impressed with the "50 Fabulous Years" on UA. by the Leroy Holmes Ork. This LP takesin 5 decades of great music from the 20's to the 60's, be-ginning with the "Charleston" and ending with "Blowing InThe Wind". Single -wise Art recommends the new AndyWilliams "On The Street" (Columbia) and the Roger Williams"Whistl'n" on Kapp: This tune was composed by Williamsand is just great for GMP programming time 1:40. Anotherpleasant single is "I See You" by Cathy and Joe (Merc) and"See -saw" by Jerry Murad's Harmonicats on Columbia andstill with Columbia the new Barbara Striesand "AbsentMe" which was written by Julie Styne and BobGetting close to the rock field Art finds easylistening with the new Cliff Richard single "Fall In LoveMindedMerrill. With You" on Capitol. For exceptionally good listening we recommend the newLiberty release of "This is The Girl That Is" by NancyAmes. There is a new Canadian LP release that certainly merits a little extra attention "That Girl" by PhyllisMarshall on Columbia. Although it leans towards jazz it hasa comfortable sound and should be a top item for programming. A great great release on London is "Arias From JuliusCaesar" with Joan Sutherland and Marilyn Home.Helen Hatton of CHUM -FM is excited over the Epic release of "The Complete Mozart Flute Sonata" by one of theworld's greatest flautist's Jean-Pierre Rampal. Victor hasre -issued two Violin Concerto's written for Heifitz and performed by Heifitz. The first was written by Sir Wm. Walton. The orchestra is conducted by Sir Wm. CETTE ETIQUETTEMarshall, born in Barrie was a first-rate amateursinger at the age of six and became a professional at theage of 13. When television started in Canada, Phyllis wasPhyllisthere, having gained a great deal of popularity through BingWhittaker's radio show "Starlight Moods" in which she wasfeatured. The late Don Hudson was on the verse of producinga TV show "The Big Revue" and after watching Phyllisat work, tagged her for the show. Phyllis then became a TVpersonality.Phyllis has tried her hand at retiring (feeling she shouldgive more time to her family) but showbiz was in her bloodand after a couple of years absence came back with a bangthat could be heard from Halifax to Vancouver. Her club dateswere record dates. Always playing to capacity audiences inCanada her fame reached the UK and after cutting her firstLP "That Girl Phyllis Marshall" on Columbia she enplanedfor England and again packed houses. This LP isn't by anymeans her first attempt at recording. Phyllis has cut manyrecords before but these are stored in her basement.
