THE SQUEAKY TOY APPROACH TO OBEDIENCEBY DIANE GOODSPEEDI began obedience work with my Lhasa,Sandy, In August, 1991. Sandy completed her CD In October, 1992, and weused scores of 192.5, 193 and 196 toqualify for the 1993 Cycle Eastern Regional. We only had two qualifyingscores out of three at the Regional, butwe learned a lot about nerves, stressand travelling! In November, 1993,Sandy completed her CDX In threestraight shows and we used scores of191, 193.5 and 197 to qualify for the1994 Cycle Eastern Regional. At the '94Regional In August, Sandy broke the sitstay In two classes but otherwise Lostonly 17.5 points over the three classes.This Fall we have continued our utilitywork and hope to start matching inearly 1995.Besides squeaky toys, which Sandy willdo practically anything for, there areseveral factors that have helped uscompete successfully In obedience.A Competitive TrainerOur most important asset is BetsyScaplcchlo, our trainer. Betsy was horrified In August, 1991 , when she learnedthat a new student wanted to competeIn obedience with a Lhasa. Today, Betsyshares our disappointment when wedon't score In the 190's1 Betsy has over15 years experience as an obediencetrainer, has competed with four different breeds (six counting her daughters'sheltie and border terrier), and currentlyhas students working In utility with everything from Border Collies to TibetanTerriers. A trainer who Is willing to work28with any breed is a must. In addition,it Is more difficult to compete with asmall dog particularly during theheeling exercises and that's 1/3 ofyour score in Novice! Betsy understands this difficulty and helps modifyher exercises to solve the problemsencountered with small dogs. Occasionally, we also modify the exercisesfor that Lhasa mentality!A Positive TrainingMethodologyA lot of Sandy's success has to beattributed to the methods with whichshe was trained. Three years of training cannot be covered in one article,however,some of the basics are:Positive Reinforcement - From DayOne Sandy has been trained usingpositive reinforcement. Many trainingtechniques allow the dog to make amistake, then correct the mistake,and then ask again for the correctbehavior. This may work for somebreeds, but It is guaranteed to angerand frustrate a Lhasal All our exercises are structured to obtain thecorrect behavior (versus allowingIncorrect behavior that must becorrected). This minimizes the development of bad habits that must beuntrained and Sandy stays enthusiastic throughout each practice.Use of a Reward - A reward quicklylets Sandy know that her action was

correct. I use both treats and toys(especially squeaky toys) depending onthe exercise and Sandy's level of understanding. When introducing a newexercise I use more treats and as Sandybuilds confidence, I alternate treats,toys and verbal praise.Teach Your Corrections - This is necessity for Lhasa training. As you know,Lhasas get mad when they are corrected and, if pushed, they quitl Inorder to prevent these situations asmuch as possible, I find it helpful toincorporate my corrections Into ournormal practice routine before I needthem. For Instance, one of my corrections for lagging during a fast is to reachdown and "pop" Sandy back into heelposition. Inttially, Sandy would stopcompletely when she saw my handcoming, so I added a new exercise toour heeling. I occasionally reach downto offer a treat or tug gently on hercollar. Sandy is now used to me reaching down and this allows me to makean effective correction when necessarywithout her getting 'mad" at the correction.'Camel' means when she's ready andsorta In my direction. Ah,the points welost while I figured this Lhasa logic out!Obedience Club Trials - I have alsofound that at trials held by obedienceclubs the attention is on obedience, notbreed, and that obedience clubsunderstand what distracts a workingdog. This Is not to say that all combinedshows are bad, but I prefer to get a'reference from someone who hasshown at the show In previous years.Know Your Judges - Again, I have theadvantage of Betsy's years of showing.She knows which Judges like the 'look'that she creates and which Judges arewill
