Mind Persuader - David Knight Hypnosis7

Chapter Three – The Conscious MindWe have 1 mind but in 3 distinct parts. The conscious mind, thesubconscious mind and the unconscious mind.To really understand why hypnosis is so important to us it isimportant to have at least a basic understanding of how these 3minds work. In Program One we look at the conscious mind. When you understand the 3 minds you will understand the magic ofthe Mind Manual that you are reading now.The conscious mind is like the small bit of the iceberg that you cansee above the water line.Prepare to be mesmerised. Mind Persuader - David Knight Hypnosis8

The Conscious MindThe conscious mind consists of everything inside of our awareness. This is the aspect of our mental processing that we can think and talkabout in a rational way.The conscious mind includes such things as the sensations, perceptions, memories, feeling, and fantasies inside of our currentawareness.Your conscious mind is what most people associate with who you are, because that is where most people live day to day. But it’s by nomeans where all the action takes place.Your conscious mind is a bit like the captain of a ship standing on thebridge giving out orders. The conscious mind communicates to theoutside world and the inner self through speech, pictures, writing, physical movement, and thought. The conscious mind is our will, our here-and-now awareness. It is thepart of the mind we use to set goals and perform rational evaluations. When you are instructed to “use your intent” at the outset of variousexercises, it is your conscious mind you will use.Your conscious mind is your thinking mind and it’s just the tip of theiceberg. This is the mind you are using right now to read thismanual. Your conscious mind is processing around 60,000 thoughts aday and is 99% busy. Everything you do starts with a single thoughtfrom your conscious mind.I like to think about the conscious mind as the keyboard on acomputer. It’s the starting point of all action or in other words it’s theplace where all the information is input. Mind Persuader - David Knight Hypnosis9

Freud often used the metaphor of an iceberg to describe the two majoraspects of human personality. The tip of the iceberg that extendsabove the water represents the conscious mind. As you saw in theprevious image, the conscious mind is just the "tip of the iceberg."Beneath the water is the much larger bulk of the iceberg, whichrepresents the unconscious. While the conscious and subconscious are important, Freud believedthat they were far less vital than the unconscious. The things that arehidden from awareness, he believed, exerted the greatest influenceover our personalities and behaviours. Because your conscious mindis so busy it becomes hard to control all the thoughts that you have. This can lead to some thoughts being negative, no matter how hardyou try to keep a positive attitude.60,000 thoughts a day means you have 2,500 opportunities everyhour to think positive and make positive changes to your life.Your mind has the ability to move your brain from state to state.Whenever you mind moves a state the brain may choose to make amemory and that memory alters what the brain may later do.Everything you do begins with a single conscious thought.Everything around you started its creation with a single consciousthought. The conscious mind involves all of the things that you are currentlyaware of and thinking about. It is somewhat akin to short-termmemory and is limited in terms of capacity. Your awareness ofyourself and the world around you are part of your consciousness. Mind Persuader - David Knight Hypnosis10

Your conscious mind is your objective or thinking mind. It has nomemory, and it can only hold one thought at a time. This mind hasfour essential functions.First, it identifies incoming information. This is information receivedthrough any of the the six senses: sight, sound, smell, taste, touch, orfeeling. Your conscious mind is continually observing and categorisingwhat is going on around you.To illustrate, imagine that you are walking along the pavement andyou decide to cross the street. You step off the curb. At that moment, you hear the roar of an automobile engine. You immediately turn andlook in the direction of the moving automobile to identify the soundand where it is coming from. This is the first function. The second function of your conscious mind is comparison. The information about the car that you have seen and heard goesimmediately to your subconscious mind. There, it is compared with allof your previously stored information and experiences with movingautomobiles. If the car, for example, is a block away, and moving at thirty miles perhour, your subconscious memory bank will tell you that there is nodanger and that you can continue walking. If, on the other hand, the car is moving toward you at sixty miles perhour and is only 100 yards away, you will get a “danger” message thatwill stimulate further action on your part. Mind Persuader - David Knight Hypnosis11

The third function of your conscious mind is analysis, and analysisalways precedes the fourth function, deciding.Your conscious mind functions very much like a binary computer, performing two functions: It accepts or rejects data in making choicesand decisions. It can deal with only one thought at a time, positive ornegative, “yes” or “no.” This is why people who adopt positive thinkinglifestyles regularly read inspirational quotes. Our single track mindscan only entertain one idea at a time, so keeping it occupied withuplifting material has the power to block negative thoughts.Positive affirmations are also very useful for keeping our brainsoccupied with pleasant and empowering thoughts or visualisations. It is continually sorting impressions, deciding which are relevant toyou and which are not.So, you are walking across the street, you hear the roar of the movingautomobile and you see that it is bearing down on you. Because ofyour knowledge of the speed of moving vehicles, your analysis tellsyou you are in danger and that some decision is required. you firstquestion is, “Do I get out of the way? Yes or no?”If the decision is “yes,” then your next is, “Do I jump forward? Yes orno?” If the decision is “no,” because of cross traffic, then your nextquestion is, “Do I jump backward? Yes or no?”If your decision is “yes,” this message is instantly transmitted to yoursubconscious mind and in a split second, your whole body jumpsback out of the way, with no additional thought or decision on yourpart. Mind Persuader - David Knight Hypnosis12

Chapter Four - So What Exactly is Hypnosis?Neither sleep nor unconsciousness, hypnosis is a state in which aperson has shut out distractions and is free to focus intently on aparticular subject or memory.Practitioners stress how normal and commonplace the hypnotic stateis. Almost everyone, they point out, experiences some form ofhypnosis spontaneously - while daydreaming, reading, or even whiledriving long distances along a highway (road trance.)When a person is in hypnosis, he/she is deeply relaxed physically, butmentally many times more alert than his/her normal state ofawareness.He/she hears and responds to everything and is an active participantin the therapy. He/she has great control over what he/she will or willnot do and will instantly reject any suggestions uncomfortable to him/her.If the individual likes and wants the suggestion given they are allowedto enter the subconscious mind. This part of us is like a computer andmust respond to what is allowed to go into it.We are all what the programming in the subconscious mind perceivesus to be. If this part of the mind views us as fat, we become fat. If itperceives that we smoke, we smoke and so on with weight loss, drugaddiction and other problems.Under hypnosis we are able to accept this subconscious computerand reprogram ourselves to be whatever we wish to be. Mind Persuader - David Knight Hypnosis13

Hypnotic Personal DevelopmentIt has been maintained that all hypnosis is essentially self hypnosis. It is certainly impossible to be hypnotised by someone else unless youwant or allow it to happen. Once you have learned how to hypnotiseyourself, practice will enable you to put yourself in a ‘trance’ wheneveryou wish, quickly and easily.Psychotic and severely mentally unstable people, however, shouldnever attempt self hypnosis as it is unlikely to produce results. The most effective way of learning self-hypnosis is to have a qualifiedHypnotherapist teach you, they can give you post-hypnoticsuggestions that will help you enter the state easier if required.Besides that, you need to know what to do when you get into trance.hypnosis is an extremely powerful tool that can make big changes inyour life when used properly. You may own a set of wrenches but they are useless to fix your carunless you have an understanding of mechanics and know what youare doing.Self HypnosisAn "altered state" of consciousness occurs when you processinformation outside of your primary representational system.Hypnosis is a state of concentrated, focused attention.Going into hypnosis involves turning your attention away fromexternal experience and directing it internally.Understanding by the conscious mind is not necessary for change. Mind Persuader - David Knight Hypnosis14

Why Should I learn Self Hypnosis?Self hypnosis is an excellent way of taking control of your life.Whether your aim is to lose weight, gain more confidence or overcomefears and phobias (and so much more), you will find your ownsolutions to your problems. This Hypnosis Mind Manual shows youhow to achieve your full potential without the need to pay expensivefees for outside help. It's a well-known fact in the hypnotherapybusiness that 'all hypnosis is self hypnosis.'What will I learn? This Mind Manual and the Mind Persuader Silver Video ConferenceZooms teach you how to reach the subconscious mind throughbypassing your conscious mind (the part that you are thinking withright now) and implant suggestions that will be effective to your aim.It is vital that these suggestions are phrased in such a way that theywill not be misunderstood. This manual shows you, in simple, easyto-follow steps, how to create a personalised hypnosis program thatyour mind will accept and act upon. Can anyone learn self hypnosis? We are all open to suggestions during everyday life but we are free toaccept or reject them. You will understand how and why certainsuggestions have such an impression on you, and by completing theexercises in the guide be in a better position to design your ownfuture. It doesn't matter if you're 19 or 99 this manual is intended foranyone who is interested enough in their own well being to dosomething about it.“In the creative state a man is taken out of himself. He lets downas it were a bucket into his subconscious and draws up somethingwhich is normally beyond his reach. He mixes this with hisnormal experiences and out of the mixture he makes a work ofart.”E.M. Forester – English Novelist Mind Persuader - David Knight Hypnosis15

Chapter Five - How Hypnosis WorksYour mind follows certain rules. These rules never change so once weknow what these rules are it makes it easier to understand whyhypnotherapy works.Over the next few pages the rules of the mind are explained. You donot need to understand these rules 100% but they will help youunderstand the hypnotic process as the course proceeds.Hypnotherapy is very much like electricity! You press the switch andthe light comes on, it is as simple as that! This course is designed togive you enough information to give you a reasonable understandingof the hypnotic process and then all the tools required to get the jobdone. The human brain works in two basic ways and is split into two halves. The conscious and the subconscious, the left and right hemispheres.Left hand side the conscious and the right hand side thesubconscious. The left brain controls the logic and the right braincontrols the dreamer state. The left hand side of the brain controls the right hand side of the bodyand the right hand side of the brain controls the left hand side of thebody. Except in left-handed people where the above is reversed! Butnot always!! Getting the hang of it?The left and right hand side of the brain are linked together by thecortex and in the front of the cortex is a little black box Hypnotists callthe frontal lobe or critical factor. Suggestions that enter the mind in arelaxed state will bypass this critical factor and can be placed directlyinto the subconscious or unconscious mind. Here mind strategies arealtered or replaced instantly, just like reprogramming a computer. Mind Persuader - David Knight Hypnosis16

Affirmations and VisualisationWouldn’t it be great if we could write our own script, direct ourfeelings and actions and focus energy on the things and people whoare most important to us? Well, you can.Daily affirmations are simple, positive statements declaring specificgoals in their completed states. Although they sound rather basic atthat level, these empowering mantras have profound effects on theconscious and unconscious mind.By using positive affirmations, short phrases that reinforce our worthand capabilities, it is possible to free ourselves from relying on thevalidation and approval of others. Researchers from StanfordUniversity have found that positive affirmations can indeed makelasting changes to the way we see ourselves in several areas of ourlives.Affirmations are positive statements that can help you to challengeand overcome self-sabotaging and negative thoughts. When you repeatthem often, and believe in them, you can start to make positivechangesYou might consider affirmations to be unrealistic "wishfulthinking." But try looking at positive affirmations this way: many of usdo repetitive exercises to improve our physical health, andaffirmations are like exercises for our mind. These positive mentalrepetitions can reprogram our thinking patterns so that, over time, webegin to think and act differently.Successful people, from top salespeople and entrepreneurs tobestselling authors and olympic athletes, have figured out that usingwillpower to power their success isn’t enough. You need to let go of any and all negative thoughts and images andbombard your subconscious mind with new thoughts and images thatare positive and stated in the present tense. Mind Persuader - David Knight Hypnosis17

The Idea Behind AffirmationsThe technique you use to do this begins with daily affirmations, whichare simply statements that describe a goal in its already completedstate.Positive affirmations are a key part of taking responsibility for ouractions and feelings. In creating affirmations that are personal to us,we are taking a step away from the past and the voices of critics thatwe may have internalised.Affirmations help us to move towards a future that we feel in controlof and hopeful for. When practiced daily, there is simply lessheadspace for negative thoughts. Although it may feel odd at first, practice turns affirmations into habits of thought, which can evolveinto automatic positive thinking. You can train yourself to re-set corebeliefs and become a positive thinker for the rest of your life.Creating Personal Positive AffirmationsAffirmations are simple statements repeated to ourselves to change athought about something. You can create your own uniqueaffirmations, using a few building blocks. Start with the phrase "Iam.”Then add things you have done in the past, because if you’ve done itbefore, the chances are you can do it again. Think creatively, here. You can also make affirmations about statements relevant to thingscurrently happening in your life: I am content with myself I am responsible for myself and accountable for my actions I accept what has happened and am at peace I have prepared for these exams and deserve success Mind Persuader - David Knight Hypnosis18

Look to the FutureNote that when you are making affirmations, try to always frame yourintentions positively. Instead of saying, “I struggled with this difficultybefore and won’t let it stop me now”, say, “I have conquered thisbefore and can do it again.”Keep Your Affirmations CloseWrite down your affirmations and keep them in places where you willsee them every day. Copy them to an index card and stick them onyour fridge, in your wallet, on your dressing room mirror or desktop. The more you see them and repeat them, the more you reinforcethem. Every week, add a new affirmation to your list.Affirmations are statements that you say either out loud, or quietly toyourself. By doing this, you affirm to yourself whatever it is that youdesire. For example, if you have an important interview coming up,you could affirm to yourself that you will have “a great interview”.When you verbalise something and repeat it to yourself, it willinfluence your thoughts. This is why affirmations are successful. Ifyou say to yourself, “I will have a great interview”, you willautomatically begin thinking about your upcoming interview as agreat interview. What you focus on, you attract so begin usingaffirmations to focus on what you desire. Mind Persuader - David Knight Hypnosis19

There are three rules to remember when using affirmations:1. Always affirm the positive.Avoid asking yourself, “What if it’s a terrible interview?” or thinkingthings like, “I’m so nervous”. These statements focus on the oppositeof what you want. Be positive, and use words that reflect what youwant to happen. If you want to be confident, use that word in youraffirmation.2. Make your affirmations short and simple.Use a short phrase, or one sentence at the most. Your affirmationshould be like a simple mantra that you can repeat over and overagain, without thinking.3. Don’t force yourself to believe it. Just say it.You don’t need to force yourself to believe your affirmation, simplyrepeat it over and over and it will naturally have an effect on you.Repeating the statement many times will cause it to work for you.Affirmations are simple, easy to use, and very powerful. Manyprofessional athletes use them to perform well. Successful businesspeople use them to close deals and run their businesses, and artistsuse them to be creative and come up with innovative ideas. You canuse them too, in any area of your life.Daily affirmations are to the mind what exercise is to the body.Repeating affirmations helps to reprogram the unconscious mind forsuccess. It helps eliminate negative and limiting beliefs andtransforms your comfort zone from a limited one keeping you trappedin mediocrity to a more expanded one where anything is possible. It helps to replace your “I cant’s” with “I cans,” and your fears anddoubts with confidence and certainty. Mind Persuader - David Knight Hypnosis20

Visualisation To induce the trance state and to deepen your selfhypnosis, you can begin to really make use of your wonderful creativeimagination by visualising certain scenes.Imagery is said to be the language of the brain. Long before languagewas invented, people must have thought in a more abstract way.Sign language is an example of this mode of thinking, as the wholesituation is often portrayed in a few simple signs. Sign language usesthe left brain hemisphere, a part which is less dominant since theadvent of reading and writing and language skills.Children can think in pictorial form, much more easily than adultscan. The reason we adults have lost this skill may go back to the old‘daydreaming in class’ syndrome, although there are still a lot ofadults out there who can and do think in images. Mind Persuader - David Knight Hypnosis21

Many landscape gardeners, interior designers, artists, for example, areable to construct an image in their mind before putting it onto paperor canvas. They may not always be aware that they are visualising, but the fact isthat they are not satisfied until the painting is perfect (as it was intheir mind.)In the same way, songwriters, poets and musicians often have ‘an ear’for their work, and a sculptor has ‘a feel’ for his masterpiece. In order to effectively deliver messages to the brain, therefore, wemust use the language that our brain understands the best, which inmost cases is visual imagery.Long before language was invented, human beings used images, sounds, feelings, smell and taste to form their abstract thoughts. These modes of thinking are known as our 'representational systems'and help us to send strong messages to the subconscious mind, which are far more powerful than words.“A Single picture paints a thousand words.” Mind Persuader - David Knight Hypnosis22

Consider this.Which of these sentences has the strongest effect on you?a) This is a dangerous situation.b) The stale stench of death in the air, hairs on the back of the neckstand up on end and a cold shiver runs down your spine as yourthroat produces excess saliva – all you can see is blood. The description of the second example uses olfactory (smell),kinaesthetic (feeling) and visual (imagination). We could haveintroduced a piercing scream to give us the auditory stimulation, andyou may recognise the saliva as using the sense of taste. In Self Hypnosis we need to be aware of our own representationalsystem. You probably instinctively know which system you prefer touse, but if not you can close your eyes and see if you can picture avase of flowers or the face of someone you love, in your mind's eye.You can test your auditory skills for ‘listening’ to the lyrics of afavourite song, or the voice of your mother or some other importantperson, or can you imagine the feel of a piece of silk or the soft fur of acat or dog, or the smell of an orange or a perfumed rose? Most likely you will find that you are able to utilise different modes ofthinking, however some people are predominantly visual, auditory orkinaesthetic, and if you find that you lean towards one particularmode of thinking then this is the one you should initially use for yourself hypnotism.“Nothing in life is to be feared it is only to be understood.”Marie Curie – French Chemist Mind Persuader - David Knight Hypnosis23
