TIMKENSHELF LIFE AND STORAGESHELF LIFE AND STORAGE OF GREASE-LUBRICATEDBEARINGS AND COMPONENTSTo help you get the most value from our products, Timken provides guidelines for the shelflife of grease-lubricated ball and roller bearings, components and assemblies. Shelf lifeinformation is based on Timken and industry test data and experience.SHELF LIFEEuropean REACH ComplianceShelf life should be distinguished from lubricated bearing/component design life as follows:Timken lubricants, greases and similar products sold instandalone containers or delivery systems are subject to theEuropean REACH (Registration, Evaluation, Authorizationand Restriction of CHemicals) directive. For import into theEuropean Union, Timken can sell and provide only thoselubricants and greases that are registered with ECHA(European CHemical Agency). For further information, pleasecontact your Timken engineer.Shelf life of the grease-lubricated bearing/componentrepresents the period of time prior to use or installation. The shelf life is a portion of the anticipated aggregate designlife. It is impossible to accurately predict design life due tovariations in lubricant bleed rates, oil migration, operatingconditions, installation conditions, temperature, humidity andextended storage.Shelf life values, available from Timken, represent a maximumlimit and assume adherence to the storage and handlingguidelines suggested in this catalog or by a Timken associate.Deviation from the Timken storage and handling guidelines mayreduce shelf life. Any specification or operating practice thatdefines a shorter shelf life should be used.Timken cannot anticipate the performance of the greaselubricant after the bearing or component is installed or placedin service.TIMKEN IS NOT RESPONSIBLE FOR THE SHELF LIFEOF ANY BEARING/COMPONENT LUBRICATED BYANOTHER PARTY.STORAGETimken suggests the following storage guidelines for ourfinished products (bearings, components and assemblies, referred to as “products”): Unless directed otherwise by Timken, products should bekept in their original packaging until they are ready to beplaced into service. Do not remove or alter any labels or stencil markings on thepackaging. Products should be stored in such a way that the packagingis not pierced, crushed or otherwise damaged. After a product is removed from its packaging, it should beplaced into service as soon as possible.10TIMKEN BALL BEARING CATALOG

TIMKENSHELF LIFE AND STORAGEA When removing a product that isnot individually packaged from abulk pack container, the containershould be resealed immediately afterthe product is removed. Do not use product that has exceededits shelf life as defined in the Timken shelflife guidelines statement. The storage area temperature should bemaintained between 0º C (32º F) and 40º C (104º F);temperature fluctuations should be minimized. The relative humidity should be maintained below 60 percent and the surfaces should be dry. The storage area should be kept free from airborne contaminants such as, but not limited to, dust, dirt, harmfulvapors, etc. The storage area should be isolated from undue vibration. Extreme conditions of any kind should be avoided.Due to the fact that Timken is not familiar with your particularstorage conditions, we strongly suggest following theseguidelines. However, you may be required by circumstancesor applicable government requirements to adhere to stricterstorage requirements. Most bearing components typically ship protected with acorrosion-preventive compound that is not a lubricant. Thesecomponents may be used in oil-lubricated applications withoutremoval of the corrosion-preventive compound. When usingsome specialized grease lubrications, we advise you to removethe corrosion-preventive compound before packing thebearing components with suitable grease.WARNINGFailure to observe the following warningscould create a risk of death or serious injury.Never spin a bearing with compressed air.The components may be forcefully expelled.Proper maintenance and handling practices are critical.Always follow installation instructions andmaintain proper lubrication.NOTENever use steam or hot water when cleaning the bearingsbecause these methods can create rust or corrosion.Never expose any surface of a bearing to the flame of a torch.Do not heat bearing beyond 149 C (300 F)TIMKEN THRUST BEARING CATALOG 11

TIMKENWARNINGS AND CAUTIONSWARNINGFailure to observe the following warningscould create a risk of death or serious injury.Proper maintenance and handling practices are critical.Always follow installation instructions and maintainproper lubrication.Overheated bearings can ignite explosive atmospheres.Special care must be taken to properly select, install, maintain, and lubricate housed unit bearings that are used inor near atmospheres that may contain explosive levelsof combustible gases or accumulations of dust such as fromgrain, coal, or other combustible materials. If hammer and bar are used for installation or removal ofa part, use a mild steel bar (e.g., 1010 or 1020 grade). Mildsteel bars are less likely to cause release of high-speedfragments from the hammer, bar or the part being removed.Warnings for this product line are in this catalog andposted on http://www.timken.com/warnings.NOTEDo not attempt to disassemble unitized bearings.Components may become damaged and affect the performanceand service life of the bearing.Do not mix components of matched assemblies. ENGINEERINGTHRUST BEARING TYPESTHRUST BEARING TYPESStandard types of thrust bearings manufactured by Timkeninclude:TVL – Single-row angular contact thrust ball bearing.DTVL – Double-row (two direction) angular contact thrustball bearing.ANGULAR CONTACT THRUST BALLBEARINGSThrust ball bearings are used for lighter loads and higher speedsthan thrust roller bearings.TP – Thrust cylindrical roller bearing.TVLTPS – Self-aligning thrust cylindrical roller bearing.Type TVL is a separable angular contact ball bearing primarilydesigned for unidirectional thrust loads. The angular contactdesign, however, will accommodate combined radial and thrustloads since the loads are transmitted angularly through the balls.TSR – Thrust spherical roller bearing.TTHD – Heavy-duty thrust tapered roller bearing with twotapered raceways. Variants include: TTHDSX – where one tapered raceway has a convexouter surface for static alignment (SX). TTHDSV – where one tapered raceway has a concaveouter surface for static alignment (SV).TTHDFL – Heavy-duty thrust tapered roller bearing having oneflat and one tapered raceway. Variants include: TTHDFLSA – where the flat raceway is made of twoself-aligning washers (SA). TTHDFLSX – where the tapered raceway has a convexouter surface for static alignment (SX). TTHDFLSV – where the tapered raceway has a concaveouter surface for static alignment (SV).TTSP – Steering pivot thrust tapered roller bearing, off-apexdesign.TTC – Steering pivot thrust tapered roller bearing, fullcomplement (cageless).TTD – Double-acting thrust tapered roller bearing.TXR – Crossed roller bearing. Each type is designed to take thrust loads. Types TVL, DTVL,TSR and TXR can accommodate radial loads as well. All typesreflect advanced design concepts, with large rolling elements formaximum capacity. For some thrust roller bearings, controlledcontour rollers are used to ensure uniform, full-length contactbetween rollers and raceways resulting in maximum capacity.Thrust bearings should operate under continuous load forsatisfactory performance.14TIMKEN THRUST BEARING CATALOG The bearing has two hardened and ground steel rings withball grooves and a one-piece brass cage that spaces the ballcomplement. The larger ring is called the outer ring, and thesmaller the inner ring. Timken standard tolerances for type TVLbearings are equivalent to ABEC 1 where applicable, but highergrades of precision are available.Usually the inner ring is the rotating member and is shaft mounted. The outer ring is normally stationary and should be mounted withO.D. clearance to allow the bearing to assume its proper operatingposition. If combined loads exist, the outer ring must be radiallylocated in the housing.Type TVL bearings should always be operated under thrust load.Normally, this presents no problem as the bearing is usuallyapplied on vertical shafts in oil field rotary tables and machinetool indexing tables. If constant thrust load is not present, it shouldbe imposed by springs or other built-in devices.Low friction, cool running and quiet operation are advantages ofTVL bearings, which may be operated at relatively high speeds.TVL bearings also are less sensitive to misalignment than othertypes of rigid thrust bearings.Fig. 1. Type TVL.

ENGINEERINGTHRUST BEARING TYPESDTVLTPSType DTVL is similar in design to TVL except that the DTVL hasan additional ring and ball complement permitting it to carrymoderate thrust in one direction and light thrust in the otherdirection.Type TPS bearings have a lower race comprised of two rings, withthe contacting faces spherically ground to provide an aligningfeature. As a result, the TPS bearing is self-adjusting to staticmisalignment. Its use is not, however, suggested for operatingconditions where alignment is continuously changing (dynamicmisalignment).Fig. 2. Type DTVL.THRUST CYLINDRICAL ROLLERBEARINGSThrust cylindrical roller bearings are designed to operate underheavy thrust loads at moderate speeds. Standard versions ofthese bearings can be operated at peripheral bearing O.D. speedsup to approximately 15 m/s (3000 fpm). Higher operating speedscan be attained with the incorporation of special design features.Consult your Timken engineer for these applications. For applications where thrust loads are high, lubricants withextreme-pressure (EP) additives should be used. The preferredinlet location for the lubricant is at the bearing bore as centrifugalforce will cause the lubricant to distribute radially toward therollers. Two types of thrust cylindrical roller bearings, TP and TPS, areavailable.TPType TP thrust cylindrical roller bearings have two hardened andground raceways and a window-type steel cage which retainsone or more profiled rollers per pocket. When multiple rollers areused in each pocket, they are differe
