Case Studies4Student Profile. . . be inspiredGail’sStoryGail Laurie first rang the College whenshe saw an article advertising a Tech SavvySeniors class in her local newspaper. Her grandson had just given her his oldcomputer, and she wanted to learn howto use it. But more than that, Gail wantedsomething that would help her step out ofher comfort zone—to hopefully begin anew chapter of her life.At the beginning of the course, Gail wasshy and self-conscious of her own limitedskills; for her, this was uncharted territory. But the friendly and open atmosphere ofthe classroom quickly brought Gail out ofher shell. “You get to know them and you’dchat each week, and then you just keepcoming back for more,” she recalls. From the start, Gail was particularlysurprised by the way lessons are structured.Instead of a rigid curriculum wherestudents are expected to learn a predetermined set of skills, classes are centredaround each individual’s learning journey, giving students room to explore andfamiliarise themselves with various digitaltools on their own terms in a safe andsupportive environment.“We don’t do a curriculum where we’ve gotto learn this and that. It’s ‘What would youlike to learn today?’, or ‘Do you have anyquestions’, and we gravitate around that,”Gail explains.“It’s just alovely, relaxedway of learning. There’s nopressurewhatsoever.”Nowadays, attending classesmeans more to Gailthan just acquiringskills—it’s alsoabout meeting newpeople, and enjoyingthe company of friends.“It’s become a socialthing for me, there’s agroup of us that havereally gelled.” Gail andher fellow Tech Savvystudents like to share and discuss anythingnew they’ve learned that week, and wouldoften go out for lunch together after eachclass. Beyond her core group, Gail alsolooks forward to seeing new faces in theclassroom. “It keeps things interesting,”Gail says, “and you learn all these differentthings and new perspectives.”TECH SAVVY SENIORSTech Savvy Seniors means more to Gailthat just acquiring new skillsFor Gail, Tech Savvy Seniors adds meaningto her life in many ways—big and small. Itmeans she’s able to sort the photos that hergreat grandson sends her into neat, labelledfolders on her computer. It means she nowhas the motivation to get out of the houseand meet up with new people. It also meansshe feels excited every week wonderingwhat interesting things she’s going to learnin class, and looks forward to going homeand practising the newly-gained knowledgeon her personal computer.“It’s given me a sense of purpose—something to look forward to I just really enjoy it.”Online Anytime COURSE GUIDE Accounting Skill SetApply communication skillsApply communication strategies in the workplaceApply critical thinking to work practicesApply digital solutions to work processesBuild and maintain business relationshipsComputers : Office Skill SetContribute to the health and safety of self and othersCreate electronic presentationsCreate your own Colour WheelDeliver a service to customersDesign and produce business documentsDesign and produce complex spreadsheetsDesign and produce spreadsheetsDevelop and apply thinking and problem solving skills Develop and present business proposalsDevelop personal work prioritiesIntroductory Business SkillsLead personal developmentOperate digital devicesOrganise business meetingsParticipate in sustainable work practicesPlan and apply time managementPlan and prepare for work readinessPromote products and servicesResearch and develop business plansSupport personal well-being in the workplaceUse business resourcesUse business software applicationsUse digital technologies to collaborate in a workenvironment Use digital technologies to communicate in awork environment Work effectively in business environments Work effectively with others Write complex documents
