Dear Friends,During the early 1980’s a television series featuring four veterans ofthe Vietnamese war came to our screen. They were wanted for acrime they hadn't committed and were on the run from theauthorities. In spite of all this, they still had time to fight for goodcauses which came their way. Any idea of the title yet? Finalclues: the leader was called Hannibal Smith and the maincatchphrase to the program was“I love it when a plan comes together”.I guess all of us make plans of one variety or another, some bigand elaborate; others may be small and especially personal.Whatever plans we make, we all have a common goal, to ensurethe plan comes together and achieves the required result. One of the privileges of being a vicar is to be part of peopleswedding plans. As you may be aware, weddings can take a longtime to plan and it can be a process that involves not just time, buteffort, finance and maybe a little bit of stress. However, theexpression that can be seen on the Bride and Groom’s faces afterthe event, reflects their joy and perhaps a little bit of relief of whentheir plan comes together.Every church in the Diocese of Wakefield has been commissionedby the Bishop to present Transformational Plans. Plans that willdrive churches forward in their worship, care, prayer and spiritually,in their evangelism and outreach and in their communityinvolvement. These plans can be summed up as:1.Understanding where we areIt is always important to take stock of where you are and also todiscover what are our strengths and weaknesses are. We alsohave to look for opportunities where the church can be mosteffective in its mission. Additionally we need to be sure that wehave developed the financial and personal resources required sothat our common life is built in such a way that it is futuresustainable.1

2. Seeking God’s vision of where we should beAll our plans need to be rooted in the worship and prayer of thechurch and our experience and belief in a God who transforms usand through us operates in our community.3. Working out how to get there. The plan will help us clarify our way forward. It will provide us withaims and objectives that can steadily be worked through, enablingfuture goals to be met. The plan is intended to be a workingblueprint for the church. It is not supposed to be a plan that is setin stone, it should be something that is constantly being reviewed, renewed and updated to meet ever changing parish life. These plans are to be delivered to Bishop Stephen on Sunday the1st of November in Wakefield Cathedral. This is not the end of theprocess but just the beginning. The plans need then to be put inplace. Almost like planting seeds they need to be cultivated, nurtured and allowed to bloom so that the fruit of the plans can beactive both in the church and in the community.Yours in Christ’s serviceDavidP.S. Remember the tv series “The A Team”.“Don’t you just love it when a plan comes together”2

Practical Christian HelpThose of you who were at the Churches Together Christian Aidservice will have heard about Nadia, who lives in the DemocraticRepublic of Congo. The death of her father three years ago left Nadia’s family indesperate poverty – their hope for the future hanging by athread. Nadia was forced to drop out of school, but a tailoringcourse run by Christian Aid Partner, Humanite Nouvelle, has givenNadia hope that one day she will be able to open her own businessand support her family. At one of the interactive prayer stations wehad a sewing machine very similar to the one we saw Nadialearning on.We have recently taken that hand-driven Singer sewing machine toC.A.R.T in Huddersfield. The joy with which it was received was soexciting. The lady who took it off us is the one who checksmachines over before sending them out to Africa. She was sopleased to receive a hand machine as she said one of those ismore use than a dozen electric ones. We felt so blessed that themachine we had used in a prayer station in church was nowbeginning a journey to Africa, and who knows? It may even be usedin the tailoring school where Nadia was.If you have a treadle or hand sewing machine anywhere in yourfamily, do think seriously about passing it on to C.A.R.T.Mine was originally my grandmother’s, but was still in good workingcondition. I still used it regularly until inheriting my sister’s electricmachine ten years ago. However, even if your machine isn’tworking, C.A.R.T. will still be interested as they buy parts on e-bayand make good any machines that aren’t working.Anne Blount4

A message from the BishopDear DavidCommon FundFirst of all I am writing to thank you and members of your church forthe efforts that you have made to ensure that last year you paidyour Common Fund assessment in full.As you know the Diocese is facing serious financial difficulties andyour full payment is significantly helping to alleviate our problem.More importantly you are contributing to the work of God across ourdiocese and to sustaining and developing our ministry and mission. Our “Common Fund” is a practical expression of our mutual supportand care. Through it we are investing in the future and are fulfillingour purpose of transforming lives, transforming congregations andtransforming communities. We know finances are difficult issues for many people at present, but I sincerely hope that we can look forward to the same levels ofcommitment and support for the coming year. Please pass on my thanks to your PCC and members of yourcongregation.Bishop StephenHonley Male Voice ChoirSt Mary’s Church HonleySaturday 27 Juneat 7.30 pmTickets 6.00available from Kariday Ltd,2 Westgate Honley5

HONLEY NEWSMens SocietyOur speaker at the April meeting was Vernon Briggs. He told usabout his early life and upbringing as a member of the SalvationArmy. He highlighted some of his memories with pieces of music. He explained that parallel to his Salvation Army life, heencountered C of E services at school. So it was not a leap in thedark when he decided to be confirmed into the Church of Englandin his later life.Vernon explained some of the differences between the SalvationArmy and Anglican Eucharist services. He gave warm praise forSalvation Army music, but said it was a personal choice to make hischange to become a full member of the Church of England. Many thanks for a very interesting evening.A Postcard from WakefieldDear Mr WainwrightThank you very much for the donation to the Church Urban Fund. News from ChinaWell, here I am, back in Wuxi! It was so lovely to see you all againand enjoy my worship in our beautiful church at Easter. It all seemsrather a dream now, but I am already looking forward to comingback to Honley in 6 - 8 weeks time. The weather here is great at the moment, very warm at 26 degrees, with a gentle breeze and so far no mozzies! It’s fun to be backhere, surrounded by a different language and mysterious letteringbut it has it's frustrations too - like trying to explain to thehairdresser how you'd like your hair cut! (it's ok, he did a good job inthe end). I really must try harder to learn the language so that Ican communicate better!I look forward to seeing you all in July.LoveLiz CummingsRecently Departed - Zina SaylesTo all involved at St Mary’s Church Honley, may I take thisopportunity on behalf of myself, and all of our family to thank you allfor your much appreciated kind support during my wife's long anddifficult illness. Having Zina mentioned within your prayers hasmeant so much to our family. In addition may I also say thank you to both Dean Henry and Maryfor their tremendous support throughout this difficult time.Sadly Zina passed away on Monday the 13th of April, but I'm surethat through your prayers and support, and with God's love, she isnow at rest in a much better place. Thank you all once again.God Bless.Keith Sayles11

St Mary’s Annual Meeting held on 19 AprilThirty-eight members of the congregation stayed after the morningservice for the AGM. The Annual Report for the DCC was read by CliffGreen (Secretary) and accepted with thanks, as was the FinancialStatement presented by Ian Walter. This showed a deficit of 3,300 forthe year 2008, although this was less than expected due to a legacy of 5,000 and income of over 5,000 from the Street Market. PaulineAdams was thanked for her work as St Mary’s Treasurer.Churchwardens John Ambler and Clive Waind presented a writtenreport on the condition of the church buildings and contents and werethanked for their work over the past year. Peter Wildman, ElectoralRoll Officer, had provided a written report in his absence and thisshowed 148 people on St Mary’s Roll with 21 of these resident outsidethe parish.Written reports had been received from the following church groups. The Vicar commented on each of these organisations and theirvaluable contributions to Parish Life.Outreach CommitteeWorship Planning GroupParent & Toddlers GroupHandchime GroupInfant & Nursery School Men’s SocietyMothers’ UnionDeanery SynodChurches TogetherJunior SchoolStreet Market Committee ChoirA number of elections were made for ratification at the Parish AGM(see below). Please note the date of our next meeting. It will take place inChurch on Thursday 4th June and is booked as a Deanery QuietEvening, but there will be some hymns and the Rev. Geoff Garsideis coming to address us. All are welcome.Hilary Willmer had us role-playing somewhat to our surprise beforegiving us information about the work of C.R.O.P. and verydisturbing and graphic it all was. This was the scene at our Maymeeting and it was good to have so many people present in spite ofthe seriousness of the subject. This was to tell us about the effectson all the family when very young people are groomed for the sexindustry. I have leaflets for anyone interested in learning moreabout this organization. The Mothers’ Union theme this year is The Cost Of Relationshipand this was reflected in our Festival at Kirkheaton Church on May11th. The people who knew Jesus, Mary, Lazarus, Zaccheus andothers had their lives transformed by Him but what did they have tosacrifice because they knew Him?Baby Bags and Angel Pockets have gone to their gratefuldestinations. Thank you so much. The gifts themselves are verywelcome but the thought that someone cares means a lot too.Let me know if anyone wishes to attend the June Jamboree atCleckheaton on June 3rd or Fun in the Field at Mirfield onSaturday, July 11th. Thank you,Brenda WildmanThe Offside RuleIf you are clever enough to understand the Offside Rule, then youmay not have been confused by recent arrangements for getting upto go to communion at the 9.30 am service. Basically, to avoidcongestion, please keep the centre aisle as ’one way traffic’towards the altar. Further guidance may be on the pew sheet orgiven by sidespersons.13John Terry

BROCKHOLES NEWSSt George’s DaySunday 26th April saw fair weather at St George’s Church for the, nowannual, occasion to mark St George’s Day. Proceedings began with avery meaningful Celtic Communion Service. The children thenenthusiastically formed up, under or around, the fantastic dragon andfollowed the Honking Hedgehogs Band on a short procession round theRecreation Ground. Back in the Church grounds there were tastysausages and burgers on the barbecue, fun and games under gazebosfor the children and a queue for face-painting.The final part of the day saw the inside of the Church really busy for theCelebration of St George, during which there was singing from the ADgroup and Brockholes School children. This was primarily an activity atthe Church for the community, but people’s generosity allowed us tosend 100 to Cystic Fibrosis and put 100 in Church funds. Thanks to everyone who worked hard to make the day go smoothly andto all who came, supported and hopefully really enjoyed a happy day.The Organising CommitteeSt George's District Church Council OfficersAt the last meeting of the DCC, officers were elected. RogerKenworthy was elected as Treasurer. There were no nominations forSecretary. If you feel that you have some spare time and somesecretarial/computer skills and would like to become involved in the lifeof the church, please volunteer.Rosalind WattOther helpWould you be willing to help in other ways? The churchyard needssome TLC. Can you spare a few hours about every fortnight (in thesummer) to cut the grass, strim the edges, keep brambles at bay, pruneshrubs and bushes? (Not necessarily all of these all on your own!)If you can help with these or any other tasks please speak to eitherMargaret Kenworthy (687169) or Rosalind Watt (663783).15

AD Coffee Morning with African ThemeThe AD children had made, during previous meetings, someexciting African masks so the plan was to display these and invitepeople for coffee. The Church took on a real African appearanceand on Saturday 16th May we welcomed Brockholes people to tourthe exhibits and have coffee. The children were ‘tour guides’ and ‘servers of biscuits’. It was avery relaxed morning and nice to see families and friends comingalong to support and see the temporary ‘new look’ at St. George’s.Proceeds of 100 were divided between ‘Save the Children’ andChurch funds. Thanks to all who helped and to all who gaveencouragement by their attendance. We were pleased to welcome the Head Teacher of BrockholesSchool who, in keeping with the African theme, brought souvenirsof her recent educational visit to the Gambia, provided a powerpoint presentation of life in the Gambia and talked to visitors, sharing her experiences and thoughts about what she had learntfrom her travels.AD LeadersADThe May meeting was held on Thursday 14th May and, inpreparation for the above event, 15 young people busiedthemselves putting up displays – particularly their own masks. Theweather was dry enough for some outside, running about games toget some fresh air and exercise after working so hard.AD LeadersSummer Lunch 2009This event will be on Sunday June 28th 12.15 for 12.30 pm inBrockholes Village Hall. This has been a successful part of oursocial calendar over many years so we hope it will be wellsupported.Tickets are 8.00 for adults and 4 for children aged 5-12. Under5s free. District Church Council Meeting held on May 12thItems of Interest:-1.2.3.4.5.6.7.The Vicar explained that St George’s has to produce a“Transformational Plan” to present at the Cathedral onNovember 1st. This has to include several aspects of Churchlife and needs to be an achievable action plan for “Where arewe going by 2013?”St George’s 150th anniversary is in 2013 – a working groupwas set up to plan celebrations - others welcome. The Treasurer reported that Expenditure had exceededIncome by 608 in the first 4 months of 2009 – the Fabricfund is still healthy and is needed as a buffer for unforeseenexpenditure.New folding chairs are to be purchased thanks to a charitydonation.Dangerous trees in the Churchyard have to be felled – thiswill cost 2,000.Vacant post of D.C.C Secretary – a volunteer is sought forthis post. There are 8 meetings a year on Tuesday evenings.Givings Officer – each parish is required by the Diocese toappoint someone to help increase our income – training willbe given.Suzanne DuftonOTHER ITEMSMainly for MenI have been diagnosed with Prostate cancer which iswell past the ‘removal by surgery’ stage. A simpleblood test would have given an earlier warning.I didn’t have my test soon enough and left it too late. Can I urge my male friends, if you are in any doubt, to go to yoursurgery and ask your GP if you can have the PSA blood test carriedout.Richard Hay17

A wedding readingLove is a temporary madness,it erupts like volcanoes and then subsides. And when it subsides you have to make a decision. You have to work out whether your roots have so entwined togetherthat it is inconceivable that you should ever part.Because this is what love is.Love is not breathlessness,it is not excitement,it is not the promulgation of eternal passion. That is just being "in love" which any fool can do.Love itself is what is left over when being in love has burned away, and this is both an art and a fortunate accident. Those that truly love, have roots that grow towards each otherunderground, and when all the pretty blossom have fallen from their branches, they find that they are one tree and not two.from Captain Corelli’s Mandolin, by Louis de Bernieres(With best wishes to Rebecca and Craig in their new married life together).Signs and symbols in churchThe most common symbolmisunderstood is this one - IHC.andoftenthemostPeople sometimes think the letters come from the Latin’ ‘Jesus HominumSalvator’ meaning, ‘Jesus, saviour of the world’, or even ‘In his service’.But they don’t. They are the first three letters of the Greek for JESUS which in Greek was IHCOYC.Confusingly Greek has two ways of writing the sound ‘s’ as in the middleof Jesus. It can be either a ‘C’ or what looks like a rather stylised ‘E’.Additionally, when you translate the Greek letters IHC into Latin they comeout as ‘IHS’. So you can see both spellings that mean the same thing. In many churches this abbreviation has been repeated and used todecorate the whole length of the white cloth covering the altar.18Parish Pump

Garden warningThis is good or bad news depending how much you like yourgarden: now doctors have warned that pruning, mowing andweeding can be just as dangerous as playing competitive sports.Apparently too many of us rush at our gardens in a fit of madenthusiasm; digging the whole allotment at one go, laying a lawn ina day, hauling the rocks for the rockery in a couple of hours. Theresults are a painful mix of gardener’s back, weeders’ wrist, pruner’s neck, extensive damage to lower backs, and strains toligaments and joints.Instead, here’s how to survive your garden this summer: do somegentle stretching to warm up muscles and joints; keep it to twohours a day until you are fit; kneel down when planting, with bothknees on a cushioned pad; if digging, use a small spade, and moveless at a time. When lifting anything heavier than a slug, bend yourknees and keep your back straight. Finally, don’t stick at any onething for long – keep moving around. On the bright side, medical studies also reveal that even half anhour of gardening a day can reduce blood pressure and cholesterollevels, and aid your mental health.Parish Pump‘O happy day’ - 20th JuneHere’s some good news: you are likely to be happy on at least oneday this month. According to research, 20th June is the happiestday of the year. One academic has even worked out a formula:O (N x S) Cpm/T He Happiness. The letter ‘O’ stands for enjoying outdoor activity. ‘N’ is for connectwith nature, which is in full bloom in June. ‘S’ is for socialisationwith neighbours and friends. ‘Cpm’ stands for childhood positivememories, ‘T’ is the mean temperature, which should be warm inJune. ‘He’ is the symbol for holiday expected.Have a good day!Parish Pump19
