SinceApple’s products do not have native support for interactive publications, you have to purchase theapplication from the iTunes digitaldownload store. You can either follow this link to be taken to the application purchase pageor use your iPad’s AppStore and search for “GoodReader.”Once Freedom’s Phoenix has loaded, click on “Magazine / Radio / TV” in the website’s navigation bar, thenchoose the option for “Online Magazine List.” You maybe prompted to enter your Freedom’s Phoenix usernameand password at this point. Choose the digital magazineyou wish to download and you will be taken to a pagewith a link that says “Download Magazine File.” Onceyou click this, GoodReader will begin downloading thefile. Once the file has finished downloading, you will beable to access it from the “Recent Downloads” menu inthe “My Documents” screen of GoodReader.Once GoodReader is installed, you can optimize yourdigital magazine experience by changing a few defaultoptions in the application. Launch GoodReader and clickthe settings icon (it looks like a little gear in the bottomleft of the screen). In the “General Settings” tab, it is recommended that you set the “Asks for link action” optionto OFF. In the “PDF files” tab, you should ensure that“Horizontal swipe” is set to ON, and “Fit page to width(portrait)” is set to ON.Once you have made the abovechanges, you will be able to swipeleft and right to “flip” through thedigital pages and the pages shouldappear as intended, just like a realpaper magazine, but with modernpaperless interactivity.3The best software for all android devices sofar has been the FREE software from theAndriod Market: ezPDF ReaderMake a Comment Email LinkSend Letter to Editor Save Link

Localbitcoins.com allows you to buy directly from anindividual; I prefer buying from my peersbecause there is more of a degree of anonymity. You can also use an exchangelike btc-e.com. An exchange will allowyou to buy and sell faster, but I would recommend not putting all of your coins onone as there is the potential for them to behacked. Exchanges also provide an easyway to convert bitcoin into other currencies. You don’t have to buy a whole bitcoin at once, either, only as much as youwant to spend. Due to its easily divisiblenature, you can spend 5 or 5000.4. When you are ready to send bitcoin inexchange for a Freedom Summit ticket, simply follow the link and scan the QRcode with your wallet app. You will be provided the QR code upon proper completion of the registration form. (Freedom'sPhoenix also takes bitcoin for subscriptionto their magazine and contributions. ThatQR code is here). The total of 250 willbe automatically calculated, and doublecheck to make sure you don’t send toomuch or too little. Transactions are irreversible. The payment will be sent instantly and you’ll be on your way to a weekendfilled with liberty, libations, and lunchesfeaturing your favorite speakers includingyours truly. ;)*Paying with bitcoin is easy, but for additionalresources on securing your bitcoin, check outthis very informative video on paper wallets andcold storage:Bitcoin 101 - Intro to Paper Wallets & ColdStorage - Bitcoin Security & Fun with SloppyWallets (Video):Happy bitcoining and silver slinging, I’ll seeyou at Freedom Summit.Meghan Kellison-Lords is a writer and activist from Pensacola, FL. Not only about how to build them, but also what they actually protect against. Despite rumors to the contrary, a Faraday cage is not necessary to protectagainst solar coronal mass ejections becausethe frequency content of such disturbances is atmuch lower frequencies—they don’t couple energy efficiently into small-scale electronics, except through conducted paths (e.g., wires coming into the system). A better precaution againstsolar events is to unplug electronics and usequality surge suppressors. How does field cancelation work?Field cancelation occurs when the free carriers in the conductive material rapidly realign tooppose the incident electric field. If the cage ismade from something non-conductive, the freecarriers are not mobile enough to realign andcancel the incident field. How thick should the conductinglayer be?The conductive layer can be very thin because ofsomething known as the skin effect. That termdescribes the tendency of current to flow primarily on the skin of a conductor. As long as theconducting layer is greater than the skin depth,it will provide excellent shielding because theabsorption loss will be large. The skin depth isa function of the frequency of the wave and theconductor material. As an example, considerthat for a frequency of 200 MHz, the skin depthof aluminum is only about 21 microns. EMPpulses can have frequency content that rangesup to 1,000 MHz. Therefore, wrapping a box ina couple of layers of heavy duty aluminum foil(typically about 24 microns thick) provides thenecessary conductor thickness to protect againsthigh-frequency radiated fields.Does it matter what type of conductor is used? Not much. The conductivity of nearly any metalis good enough to allow the carriers to easilyrealign to cancel external fields. For example,if silver (the best conductor) is used in place ofaluminum, the skin depth at 200 MHz is reducedto about 4.5 microns. Of course, the high cost ofsilver would prevent using it for such a purpose. Can a Faraday cage have holes?Yes, as long as the holes are small with respectto the wavelength of the incident electromagnetic wave. For example, a 1 GHz wave has awavelength of 0.3 meters in free space. As longas the holes are significantly smaller than thatdimension (i.e., a few millimeters), they won’tlet in much of the incident wave. This is why fineconductive mesh can be used when constructing a Faraday cage. In practice, the cage’s lidor door usually causes the most leakage. Tapingthe seam with conductive tape helps to reducethis leakage.8Continues on Page 9

February 20149Continued from Page 8 - Build Your Own Faraday Cage - Here’s HowCan you use existing conductiveenclosures?Yes, there are many conductive enclosures thatcan be used, including ammo cans, metal garbagecans, anti-static bags, and even old microwaveovens. Each has its own level of effectiveness ascovered in my book, Disaster Preparedness forEMP Attacks and Solar Storms. The key criterion is that the gaps and seams remain very small.greatest protection from an EMP. The resultsfrom testing three different types of bags areprovided in Disaster Preparedness for EMP Attacks and Solar Storms. When selecting an ESDbag, consider not only the shielding effectiveness but also the physical ruggedness of the bag.A tear or large hole can compromise the bag byallowing EMP energy to enter.Must the cage be grounded? There is a great deal of confusion regardinggrounding of a Faraday cage. Grounding ofthe cage (i.e., connecting it to some Earth-referenced source of charge) has little effect onthe field levels seen inside the box. Groundingprimarily helps to keep the cage from becoming charged and perhaps re-radiating. The bottom line is that an ungrounded cage protects thecontents from harmful electromagnetic fields aswell as a grounded one.Anti-stat
