Through the Iron Bear Club you willgain unprecedented insight into the world ofBaylor Athletes as they prepare for competition.For more information please visit our aylor Strength and Conditioning: A New BeginningThe renaissance of Baylor’s Department ofAthletic Performance began in December of2007 with the hiring of Head Football Coach ArtBriles. One of the first orders of business forCoach Briles was the hiring of Assistant AD forAthletic Performance, Kaz Kazadi, to be hisstrength coach. Since that time, the AthleticPerformance Department has grown by leapsand bounds with the hiring of additional staffand the opening of the state of the art SimpsonAthletic Center weight room. In this, the firstIron Bear Club Newsletter, you will be introduced to the Athletic Performance staff and theSimpson Athletic Center weight room.Housed within the Simpson Athletic Centerweight room are a number of items that separateBaylor Athletic Performance from other strengthand conditioning departments across the country. In addition to the 24 multi-purpose racks,135 pairs of urethane coated dumbbells, and 20cardiovascular machines, specialized equipmentsuch as the DXA Scanner (measures bone density and body composition) and the OmegaWave (provides a snapshot of the functionalityof the various systems that control the body)provide the staff with information pertaining tothe athletes other programs cannot collect. TheBaylor Department of Athletic Performanceprides itself on its dedication to good old fashioned hard work coupled with a relentless pur-Simpson Athletic Center located within the HighersAthletic Complexsuit of new ideas and technology that will keepus on the cutting edge of athletic performance.It is our sincere desire that through the IronBear Club you will gain greater insight into whatit takes to perform as an elite level collegiateathlete in today’s world, while providing youwith an opportunity to contribute to Baylor Athletics in a way that directly impacts the athletes.We hope that you enjoy getting to know us inthe pages that follow and we look forward toproviding additional information and updates inthe future!

In the 16 months Kazadi hasdirected the Baylor strength program, it hasgrown tremendously. In that time four new staffmembers have been hired and the Simpson Athletic Center has been outfitted as a premier facility in the country.Kazadi brings to Baylor a no nonsense approach to athletic performance that is focusedon the development of the entire individual.Encouraging student athletes to be mentallytough, emotionally stable, and disciplined in allaspects of their life is every bit as important toKazadi’s program as getting them physicallystrong or fast.Prior to his arrival at Baylor, Kazadi was theAssistant Director at the University of SouthFlorida. He also spent two seasons as the assistant strength coach for the Kansas City Chiefsafter a short stint at the University of Missouri.Kazadi graduated from the University of Tulsaand went on to play football professionally afterbeing drafted in the 6th round by the St. LouisRams. Upon completion of his professionalfootball career, he headed to the University ofMissouri to receive his Master’s Degree. Heholds certifications from the Collegiate Strengthand Conditioning Coaches Association and USAWeightlifting. Kazadi and his wife Moniquehave three children, Ra-sun, Isis, and Rohon.Anne Tamporello: Director of Olympic SportsAnne Tamporello joined the Baylor Department of Athletic Performance as Director ofOlympic Sports in January of 2009.Anne TamporelloBefore her arrival she served at a comparablecapacity at Duke University where she oversawall aspects of the training of 21 Olympic sportsprograms, working directly with men’s andwomen’s lacrosse and soccer, as well as women’svolleyball and field hockey. During her time atDuke, she made drastic changes to the wayOlympic sports were trained, consistentlyachieving Top 10 NCAA rankings.Assistant Director of Strength and Conditioningat Texas A&M. There she worked primarilywith the women’s tennis, football, softball, andtrack and field.Tamporello, a Texas native, is a 2001 graduateof Texas A&M University where she was a fouryear letter winner and captain on the soccerteam. She holds certifications from the NationalStrength and Conditioning Association and theCollegiate Strength and Conditioning CoachesAssociation. Tamporello currently resides inWaco.Prior to her work at Duke, she served as anChris Ruf: Director of FootballComing to Baylor from the University ofSouth Florida where he served as an AssistantStrength Coach is Chris Ruf. At Baylor, Rufworks closely with the football team along withoverseeing the development of the track & field/cross country program and organizing the BaylorAthletic Performance Clinic.Chris RufWhile at USF, Ruf also worked at RichLansky’s OPTI as a strength coach and assistedwith Team Florida Gulf Coast Weightlifting.Prior to USF, Ruf spent eight seasons at IowaState University as an Assistant Strength Coachwith their football program. During that time,ISU went to five bowl games and won the firsttwo bowl games in school history.Ruf received his Bachelors degree in healthand physical education with an athletic trainingminor from Luther College where he playedfootball. He received his Master’s in exercisescience from Iowa State in 2003. Ruf is certifiedby the National Strength and Conditioning Association, the Collegiate Strength and Conditioning Coaches Association, and USA Weightlifting.Ruf and his wife Megan have a daughter, Madison.

Volume 1, Issue 1Page 4Charlie Melton: Director of Men’s BasketballCharlie Melton a graduate of the University ofMemphis, began working for Baylor Men's Basketball in 2005.Charlie MeltonMelton was formerly a full-time StrengthCoach at Florida State University, from 20012005. He completed his masters degree in Exercise and Sport Science at the University of Mem-phis in 2000. He holds certifications from theNational Strength and Conditioning Associationand the Collegiate Strength and ConditioningCoaches Association. He is married to Crystaland they have three children, Norah, Robbie,and Sammie.Shaun McPherson: Director of Women’s BasketballShaun McPherson, Director of Strength and Conditioning for Women’s Basketball, is in his ninth yearat Baylor and sixth season with the Lady Bear basketball program.Shaun McPhersonAdam Davis: Assistant Director of Strength a nd Co nditio ningSince joining the Lady Bear basketball program, theteam has made six consecutive NCAA tournamentappearances, been to the Sweet 16 three times, wonthe 2005 NCAA Championship, claimed a regularseason Big 12 championship, and two Big 12 tournament titles. Formerly, McPherson worked withBaylor’s track & field, baseball, and tennis programs,and assisted with football. During his time withthese programs he was part of a national champion-ship, Final Four, World Series, eight Big XII regularseason & tournament championships.The North Carolina native received his master ofscience in education from Baylor in 2001 afterearning his bachelor’s degree from the Universityof North Carolina, where he served as an undergraduate strength and conditioning coach.He is certified by the National Strength and Conditioning Association and is a USA WeightliftingLevel 1 Club Coach.Adam Davis: Associate DirectorAdam DavisComing from Loras College in Dubuque, Iowawhere he served as the Director of Strength andConditioning from January 2007 to January 2008is Adam Davis. At Baylor, Davis assists with thefootball team as well as directing the training ofthe volleyball team, serving as the Director of theIron Bear Club, and overseeing Football’s SportsNutrition Department.Davis was an Assistant Strength Coach with theIowa State University football team in 2006. Priorto that he was a Graduate Assistant StrengthCoach at Illinois State University from June 2004to May 2006.Davis received his undergraduate degree inexercise science from Luther College in 2004,where he was a four year letter winner on thefootball team. He earned his Master’s degree inexercise science from Illinois State University in2006. Davis holds certifications from the National Strength and Conditioning Associationand USA Weightlifting. Davis and his wife Alissa live in Woodway.

At Baylor, Burgeoversees the softball and equestrian athletic performance programs while assisting with football.Tanna BurgeAt Clemson, Burge served as an AssistantStrength and Conditioning Coach for the Olympic sports programs. Prior to Clemson, Burgecompleted a year long internship at The University of North Carolina- Chapel Hill where sheassisted with the Strength and Conditioningprogram for all Olympic Sports.Burge is a Baylor Alumnae. As a student atBaylor she worked as an undergraduate assistantwith the strength and conditioning departmentfor three years. She earned her Bachelor degreein Health/Fitness Studies in 2001. Burge is certified by USA Weightlifting and resides in ChinaSpring.Andrew Althoff: Assistant DirectorAndrew Althoff is entering his first year atBaylor University as Assistant Director ofStrength and Conditioning. Althoff assists withfootball, track and field, and oversees men’stennis.Andrew AlthoffJeremy WeeksWilliam BraddAlthoff comes from Valdosta State Universitywhere he designed and implemented programsfor baseball, softball, men’s and women’s crosscountry and tennis; achieving numerous nationalrankings. He also assisted with football, obtaining a national championship in 2007.career with football, where he was a four yearletter winner, he became a student coach. Heworked with strength and conditioning, as wellas football. He also interned, during summer2006, at University of Iowa working with thestrength and conditioning program for Olympicsports.Prior to Valdosta State, Althoff was at LorasCollege. At completion of his collegiate athleticHe currently holds a BA in Sports Science withminors in Biology and Coaching, in addition tocertifications from the National Strength andConditioning Association and the CollegiateStrength and Conditioning Coaches Association.Althoff resides in Waco with his fiancé, ChrissieSimpao.Jeremy Weeks: Graduate AssistantWill Bradd: Graduate AssistantJeremy Weeks joined the Baylor Departmentof Athletic Performance after interning for thestrength and conditioning program at New Mexico State University. At Baylor, Weeks assistswith football, while overseeing cross country andmen’s golf.Weeks attended New Mexico State Universitywhere he was a team captain and a three yearstarter for the Aggies’ football team. While atNMSU, he earned a Bachelor degree in Kinesiology.Weeks is currently working on his Mastersdegree in Sport Pedagogy at Baylor Universityand holds certification from USA Weightliftingand the National Strength and ConditioningAssociation.Coming to Baylor from Georgia SouthernUniversity where he graduated in 2004 with adegree in Exercise Science is Will Bradd. AtBaylor, Bradd assists with the Athletic Performance Department while overseeing the spiritsquad and women’s golf.After graduating from Georgia Southern,Coach Bradd was a Sport Coach at HIT TrainingCenter until 2006 when he began pursuing thepersonal training profession.Coach Bradd is currently working on his Masters degree in Sports Management at BaylorUniversity.
