2F R O M T H E D E S K O F R A B B I R AV S K I5 Windsor DriveCharleston, SC 29407Phone: (843) 571-3264Fax: (843) nu-el.comEvery holiday in the Jewish year has its own unique qualities and flavor. Each holidayfocuses on different elements of life. Some are more concerned about our relationshipwith God, such as the High Holidays when we seek Divine forgiveness and mercy aswell as the strength to be better in the coming year. Others are more centered on ourrelationship with the physical world around us, such as Sukkot when we concentrate onnature, whether using the Lulav and Etrog or sitting in the Sukkah. While every holidayof course has elements of both, Pesach is unique in the way it emphasizes a third aspectand value of our lives, education.Like some holidays, Pesach emphasizes our relationship with God. The holiday requiresthat we tell the story of how God redeemed our ancestors from slavery and performedwonderous miracles for them during and after the Exodus. The Exodus and the miraExecutive Directorcles that were performed, we are reminded are examples of how GodBob Greenbergremembered us and the covenant that was made with Abraham, Isaac and Jacob, thisReligious School Principalmoment binds us to God and God to us. Yet like other holidays, Pesach also makes us& Ritual AssistantDaphne Hubarakeenly aware of the physical world around us, for example we have symbols on theSeder plate, the egg and parsley, which represent the changing season and the onset ofPresidentSpring. Where we feel this impact on our daily lives the most however may be inCraig Browdyfulfillment of one of the most pressing requirements of Pesach, completely removingPresident ElectChametz, leaven, from our lives. We clean and search and sell and burn and nullify. WeAl Hawkinschange dishes, cover counters and use different pots, pans and utensils, we eat different1st Vice PresidentStephen Steinbergfoods. In doing all of this we become hyper aware of our food and surroundings, of2nd Vice Presidentplaces we have checked and cleaned and places we haven’t, of what we are eating andMike Millswhat others are eating as well.TreasurerRabbiEvan RavskiSuzanne LynchFinancial SecretaryRyan BluesteinRecording SecretaryAbby LevineCorresponding SecretaryEllen HoffmanParliamentarianKaren PinoskyPast PresidentMarsha GewirtzmanBoard of TrusteesSandra BrettJulie EllisonRachel LandisJack LawsonBrenda LedermanRaina RubinShara StarTamar SternfeldVic WeinsteinSisterhood PresidentLinda KrawcheckMen’s Club PresidentHoward SnowPesach though, strongly emphasizes one value more than other holidays, the value ofeducation. The Haggadah may tell of the story of the Exodus, but it is framed by theRabbis who are studying it, we read of their thoughts and recount thediscussions that they had as well as the how it is that this story can be taught todifferent children and what lessons can be learned. We emulate the Rabbis of theHaggadah by making it an imperative not just to tell the story, but to teach the story ofthe Exodus. The Seder is constructed so that we, as participants, ask questions and havediscussions. From the oldest to the youngest, everyone at the Seder table is encouragedto participate, not just by reading a paragraph of the Haggadah, but through questions, discussion, teaching and learning. The Seder plate and foods of Pesach encourage evenmore questions to be asked and lessons to be taught. On Pesach we strive to connect with God and the world around us, but we alsorecognize learning and education is a value that is respected and treasured in Judaism, and with out it Pesach, and the Seder, is just not complete. So, this year as we sit downaround the Seder Table and prepare to tell the story of Passover, let us allow it to be amoment when one generation teaches the next about the Exodus, about family stories, traditions and holiday recipes. Let friends teach each other new ways to engage in theSeder, let children make us question time tested answers, and let our learning aroundthe Seder Table deepen our love and commitment to those we love, God and Judaism.Chag Kasher Ve’Sameach and a zissen Pesach.

3P R ES ID E N T -C R A IG B ROW DYTwo years have gone by since my first scroll message in the Spring of 2020 as humanityfell into the abyss that was COVID 19. How can I sum up two years that as a leader ofour beloved Emanu-El community seemed to bring endless challenges from day to dayand week to week and yet, on the other hand, seems to have passed by so quickly that itis now almost a blur. There are so many successes and achievements that we haveaccomplished. Moreover, there is always so much more opportunity and room to buildon our strengths to continue to grow.In reviewing our strengths and accomplishments the first and foremost that comes tomind is our success in navigating the pandemic in a way that prioritized Pikuach Nefesh, the foremost of the 613 mitzvot, the preservation of life. How can I thank everyone-from the staff and Covid Task Force to the individual congregants who were alwayswilling to share their perspectives. Together we focused on the health of our mostvulnerable while creatively working to maintain the bonds of community which were socritical in times of sickness and loss. We organized and set up alternative and traditionaladult education opportunities, shabbat live stream, zoom minyans and meetings, creativehigh holidays where we shared from our homes, the flavors of a most unique andmeaningful Rosh HaShannah sermon. So many members and staff stepped up each toprovide financial support and energy. With the help of PPP and much hard work, wewere able to not only survive, but invest in a way that enabled us to emerge strongerthan ever.Stepping into the presidency, we had just completed a Rabbi search and were in themidst of searching for an executive director. The enormity of the goal and opportunityto hire and onboard new professional leadership was both exciting and daunting. In theensuing months, successes and stresses of forming a team and navigating the challengescannot be minimized. Both our creative young Rabbi and our experienced executivedirector have brought their strengths combining with the knowledge and continuitybrought by Daphne, Leah, Ruth and Larry. I am grateful to our staff for theirunwavering sincere commitment to the best interests of the synagogue and ourcommunity.Inheriting a shutdown kitchen, a plan and a fundraising challenge. With the entirety ofthe congregation stepping up and pulling together, the incredible leadership of a few keylay leaders and synagogue administration, and the selection of capable responsiblearchitects and contractors we now have a new kitchen and a fund to support it. Again, thanks to so many hard-working volunteers we have invested in continual improvementof our security and building and grounds. From locks to fences to plans and training, topolicies and procedures the never-ending efforts to secure our synagogue family haveand will continue to improve. Our grounds look so beautiful thanks to the newinvestments and planting. With the incredible generosity of so many of our mostdedicated families, our amazing array of stained-glass windows continues to growenveloping us in a beauty that makes entering our building an experience in and of itselfif we only take the time to feel it.Continued pg.71-Kathy Fischbein3-Steve Cook4-Jill Steinberg4-Elisheva Holub5-Sy Baron5-Josif Tsveer5-Sarah Book5-Sunny Steinberg5-Liam Solomon6-Gretchen Weintraub6-Maurice Krawcheck7-Alexis Veyber7-Jack Lawson7-Gabe Bluestein8-Ellen Nadler8-Stephen Reichlyn8-Neil Draisin9-Missy Gold9-Harriet Goldberg9-Richard Sorota10-Linda Wyland10-Jane Mendelsohn10-BronislavaChernomordik10-Susan Chase10-Marsha Golod11-Karen Stark12-Ida Polyachenko12-Kailey Allen13-Cliff Ryba13-Ann Ryba13-Stuart Cohen13-Larry Freudenberg14-Henri Gros14-Eric Oser14-Ann Epstein14-Slava Tsveer14-Richard Star14-Nathan Dolbir15-Rebecca Fisher15-Liz Lynch15-Esther Hart16-Sara Scolnick16-Isabella Scolnick16-Madeline KrawcheckContinued on pg. 5

7President ContinuedOver the past two years Emanu-El’s commitment to Tikkun Olam, as envisioned in our strategic plan, has gonefrom strength to strength thanks to our volunteers and strong committee leadership. The accomplishments are arightful source of pride. The new members joining over the past year, both young and old, have helped revitalizeour community and bring opportunities to make new friends with whom to share the joys and spirit of Judaism. Our Membership Committee continues to work hard to spread the word and indeed every member ofEmanu-El is makes a difference when it comes to outreach and to making new members feel welcome. Our synagogue is in some ways getting younger as we approach our 75th anniversary. Our Religious School, under the continued able leadership of Daphne and the Religious School Board, is bursting at the seams. Welook forward to robust Bar and Bat mitzvah classes over the next few years, and we will continue to invest inprogramming for teens ensures our young people graduate with a strong Jewish identity. As Al Hawkins steps up and our new and exciting board slate is finalized, our governance structure is strongerthan ever. Our Bylaws and investment policies are being updated. Our budget for the coming fiscal year isprogressing on time thanks to the efforts of the board, executive, finance and bylaw committees. Lookingforward, we have so many opportunities. We can improve the metrics by which we measure staff operationaleffectiveness, efficiencies, and success of programming. We need to build an adult education committee andgrow attendance providing more learning that more thirst for. We can expand our Chesed or lovingkindnesscommittee to do more to support families and individuals in times of mourning, health challenges and othertimes of need. We can always be even more welcoming as we befriend newcomers to our community. We canand should do more to bring together members who share common interests and demographics throughchildren’s and teen programming, Men’s Club and Sisterhood reinvigoration, along with developing newChavurah groups. Our upcoming 75th anniversary celebration and trip to Israel are wonderful upcomingopportunities for community building.I finish my time as President reflecting upon all of the efforts with a sense of fulfillment having had theopportunity to provide leadership during turbulent times, emerging in a new place with fantastic possibilities. Iwill close with two quotes: “The responsible life is one that responds. In the theological sense, it means that G-dis the question to which our lives are an answer.” —Rabbi Jonathan Sacks. “You are not obligated to completethe work, but neither are you free to desist from it.” —Pirkei Avot 2:21. Please join me in getting involved—sothat the answer to “the question” is a bright future for our Jewish community.Congregational Cookout and Annual MeetingSunday, April 24thJoin us for a community cookout, followed by our spring Congregational Meeting. The meeting will include avote on the incoming Board of Directors, review and vote on a proposed update to our By-Laws, and muchmore. Men's Club President Howard Snow FROM THE DESK OF RABBI RAVSKI Every holiday in the Jewish year has its own unique qualities and flavor. Each holiday focuses on different elements of life. Some are more concerned about our relationship with God, such as the High Holidays when we seek Divine forgiveness and mercy as
