Since thebeginning of theyear there hasbeen a lot of groaning about thisfact in our church circles. How dowe celebrate this cultural day oflove and friendship when we haveashes on our foreheads remindingus that ‘you are dust and to dustyou shall return’? As a personwho tends to always see the glassas half full, I consider this to be anopportunity, not a challenge.During the season of LentChristians are called to spendtime doing serious selfexamination for forty days inanticipation of the arrival ofEaster, a season of life andrenewal. What a wonderfulopportunity this gives us to thinkabout what love and friendshipmean us and how we exerciseBy the Rev. Dr. Mauricio Wilsonthose in our lives andrelationships. The comingtogether of Ash Wednesday andValentine’s Day may just serve asthe perfect occasion for puttingaside roses, chocolates andexpensive cards that say things wemay or may not really feel, toready dig in and go deep into whatit really means to love. After all,at the end of the season of Lent weare called to remember andpartake in the ultimate expressionof love humanity has ever known,Jesus’ death on the cross for all onGood Friday. There is a 1978 song, madefamous by brothers Barry, Robinand Maurice Gibb (the Bee Gees),entitled How deep is your love, and every close to Valentine’s Dayit comes to mind for me. Thoughits focus is romantic love, I wonderif it can’t also serve as a questionfor Christian love. How deep is mylove: of God, the other and myself? In the call to be more Christ like(Continued on Page 8)BLACK HISTORY MONTH POTLUCKMark your calendar. These gifts came notwrapped in paper but in passion. They were not placedaround a tree but around a cross. They were not coveredwith ribbons but sprinkled with the blood that Christ shedon our behalf.Max Lucado explores the many gifts that Christ provided tous at his crucifixion. These include not only the gift of thecross, but also the gift of the thorns that pierced his brow. The nails thattore his flesh. The seamless robe that he removed for us. The empty tombwhere he forever defeated sin and death. The hill of the cross is rich with the gifts of God’s grace. These were giftshe didn’t have to give. The only required act for our salvation was theshedding of blood, yet God did so much more. So, as we unwrap thesegifts, we need to pause and listen for his voice. As we do, perhaps we willhear him whisper, "I did it just for you."February 21: He Chose to Be One of UsFebruary 28: He Chose to Forgive UsMarch 7: He Chose to Invite Us into His PresenceMarch 14: He Chose to Love Us ForeverMarch 21: He Chose to Give Us Victory2018 CATECHUMENATEAre you seeking to be Baptized,Confirmed, to be received into theEpiscopal Church, or to reaffirmyour faith?During the season of Lent we will behaving classes for those who wish tobecome a member of the churchthrough one of these rites.Following the general structure ofan ancient church practice, thecandidates will be received into theorder of catechumens the firstSunday in Lent and the classes willbe held from 11am to 12 noon onSunday mornings.Baptisms will take place at theEaster Vigil on April 15 at 8pm.Confirmations, receptions andrenewal of Vows will be at GraceCathedral in San Francisco in June2018.Please speak to Fr.
