krav maga training & youHi, I’m Jon Bullock, UK Director of Krav Maga Global. Thanks for requesting this guide.I’m pleased that you are showing interestin beginning KravMaga training with an approved KMG Global (UK) club and Ireally hope that this guide may answer any questions thatyou have and give you the confidence totrain in Krav MagaLet’s start:You might think that I’ll begin this guide with a detailed explanation of Krav Maga, it’s history, techniques, and top instructors? Actually, all I’m willing to say right now is that Krav Maga is apractical, effective and realistic system of self defence that was developed, and continues to bedeveloped in Israel. I’ll talk about this later on in your guide.Let’s start with what’s important to you right now!How can Krav Maga benefit you and has it helped people just like you? There is a well-known saying in the Krav Maga world that Krav Maga is for everyone and to beabsolutely honest with you – I disagree!Krav Maga is for you if you want to achieve one or all of the following things:1) Improve your self confidence to make good decisions2) Learn effective self defence skills to look after you or your loved ones3) Enhance your fitness to be able to cope with situations of conflictLearning Krav Maga will allow you to achieve one or all of the above as long as you are a motivatedand committed individual, you like to meet and spend your time with like minded people. Aboveall, you are not someone who starts something and then gives up making excuses as to why!In fact, I am so confident that Krav Maga will get you the result you are looking for, that if you weretraining Krav Maga with a Krav Maga Global (UK) club , I’ll offer you the following reassurance:We understand sometimes it’s hard, you start off with the best of intentions and things just don’twork out. We can provide you with all the opportunity there is to progress but if you don’t turnup to train, then there isn’t much you can learn and you won’t improve. However, if you attendtwo classes every week for at least 16 weeks we’ll guarantee that you will increase your fitness, increase your confidence, improve your knowledge of self-defence and your ability to defendyourself and your loved ones. At any point, you can approach the instruction team to discussyour progress. Sometimes the smallest of corrections or instructions. Now, I know that’s a pretty bold statement, however we sincerely believe in what we are teachingyou and we know that what you are going to be learning will give you some fantastic life changingskills.

krav maga training & youBefore I tell you more about Krav Maga, the training and what you can expect,I want to introduce you to David Forster David has been training Krav Maga for over5 years and his story really shows thateveryone has very similar reasons and goalsfor learning Krav Maga, it’s just that someactually go out and do it, whilst othersdon’t’!“I have just entered my 5th year of trainingin Krav Maga and I’m now at Graduate Level.Recently, I’ve been thinking about how I gotto where I am now, as thinking back to why Ibegan helps me realise how much training inKrav Maga has done for me, the challenges Ihave overcome and the successes that I havegained. To be truthful, quite frank and thankful, I cannotsay that I began Krav Maga training because ofa life-changing incident on the street, I knowthat many people begin training for this reasonand to be honest that’s a bit late. I didn’t wantan incident to occur to make me realise thatmy safety and that of my family is important!I work in the City of London and the culture isall about excess, the eating, the drinking andthe client liaison. I was always conscious thatI needed to balance this lifestyle with healthyactivity as I have seen so many friends loseeverything from health, wealth and familythrough various events linked to not takingcare of themselves.I have always been ‘in and out’ of the gym, without any real focus. I think the problemthat most people find when they join a gymis that they don’t have a goal a reason forbeing there and a lot of people think that tojust join the gym is enough. I know countlesspeople who ‘joined the gym’ and never actuallywent and I think the reason is purpose. Youneed to have a purpose whether that is to losea certain amount of weight or to get strongerby setting yourself a physical challenge, to justjoin and go is simply not enough! When I found Krav Maga, I felt I had found mypurpose and my route to fitness and a healthylifestyle, whilst at the same time, giving mesome skills to protect the people I love themost. My motivation was that of being a Dad,I have two youngsons and I alwayswanted to ensureI could protectthem.WhenIwasresearching whatto learn, what inspired me about Krav Magawas the practical approach. I am quite a directguy, I don’t really like learning things that Irealise are pretty much useless to me, or I findout that it’s going to take me 10 years to getanywhere near being proficient! By that I don’tmean I was looking for a quick fix, I know thatdoesn’t exist yet anything practical shouldbe useable in some way shape or form in arelatively short period of time. It doesn’t meanI will be perfect at it, yet at least it’s useful.Krav Maga is no nonsense, which suits medown to the ground! I like the approach thatKrav Maga takes as there are no rules to whatyou must learn, as you must learn anythingthat will help keep you safer.Krav Maga also brings out the ‘inner you’ thatperson deep inside you that rarely comesout, and would only come out if you are in asituation of danger. I am a very passive person, yet through training I know that I can protectmy sons if I need to, that my ‘inner person’exists and can ‘come alive’ if and when I haveno other choice. To be successful, I believe you need goals, bethat short, medium or long term. To reach anygoal you have to invest the time, so I thought itmight be useful to let you know what my goalsare:1. To attend training on a regular basis, at leasttwice a week2. Attend as many additional training eventsthat the KMG (UK) arranges each year to furthermy knowledge.3. Attend those sessions that are specific to mycurrent experience.4. Go to Israel and train

krav maga training & you“The only one of the above I havenot yet achieved is number 4,however that is on the cards”I am often asked by people who donot train in Krav Maga ‘can I fight’ it’s a pretty lame question everysituation can be so different, sobeing able to fight is one thing yetbeing able to avoid it is completelydifferent and, to be honest it’s justas valuable. To give you an example afterstarting Krav Maga, even after thefirst couple of months of training, Inow find myself doing the following ALWAYS knowing who is around meand what’s going on around me as Itravel aroundMove to another train carriage if Idon’t like a certain situation or anindividual who is near meWhen I use public transport I makesure I have at least two exits awayfrom a potential situation“Does this make me paranoid?ABSOLUTELY NOT, it just showsthat I am aware”So the answer to the question isYES I can fight, and I am also damngood at not getting in that fight and that suits me just fine!I am also asked questions such as‘Am I a black belt?’Focusing towards my next grade isgreat for my progression, it givesme my medium term goals. I willachieve my Expert Level 1 (the KravMaga equivalent of Black Belt). Abelt doesn’t dictate how I respond,my grade is more a reward forshowing what I know at a givenmoment in time it doesn’t dictatemy reaction in a difficult situation as every situation is so different. Imight have to adapt my skills to theenvironment. When you first start training in KravMaga it is new, it is different and youfeel out of your comfort zone soonthat feeling goes and is replacedwith a much better feeling of beingpart of something.Sometimes you have to dragyourself to training, we are allhuman, and you’ll never regrethaving done so. Overcoming our‘lazy’ emotions is tough sometimeswith the pressure of life yet pushagainst it and you’ll come out ontop and feeling great!Look, it’s a journey we all shouldhave a journey that needs to beenjoyed. I have trained with someinspirational and interesting people.I have made some fantastic friendsand shared some great experienceswith them. Why do I get on with these people?Simple. We share the same valuesand are like minded. We havebecome part of a community muchthe same as your community athome or at work we share commongoals and a passion for Krav Maga.I’m nearly finished so stay awakeso I can say one thing. It is VERYeasy to find excuses to not dosomething, and the classic oneis that of ‘I can’t afford it’ andfor some people, that may be thecase and for many, you can findthem sitting at home watching SkySports night after night, or downthe pub every weekend and if thatis you, either accept that’s who youare and don’t say ‘I was going totrain in Krav Maga but, but, but” ortake a look in the mirror, step out ofyour comfort zone and give it a go who knows, you may enjoy it!So to finish I am 50 years oldthis year, I keep getting betterand better! I feel fitter and moreconfident than I ever have before. Thanks for reading this, I hope ithelps and I really look forward tomeeting you at Krav Maga trainingsome day you won’t regret it!Stay SafeDave ForsterThere are a lot more people likeDave – and like you – learningKrav Maga.I guess its time you found outwhat Krav Maga actually involvesand what you will actually learn.

krav maga training & youTo make this easier, it’s probably better to letyou know what Krav Maga isn’t and give you abrief history of Martial Arts training in generalMartial Arts can be separated into 3categories:Sporting Systems - Systems designed forsporting purposes, such as Boxing, Thai Boxingand Tae-Kwon Do. The aim is to WIN something, status, money, a belt or a trophy.Traditional Systems - Systems createdmainly from Japan or China many years agosuch as Karate, Kung Fu and Jiu Jitsu which areoften for spiritual reasons or, to help combat aspecific problem that existed many years agoin these countries.Reality Based Systems - These are modernsystems devised for the modern world. Thereare no traditional or sporting elements, theyare practical systems designed to increasethe chance of remaining safe in a situation ofconflict in a difficult environment. As you will have guessed, Krav Maga isa reality-based system. We do not haveany traditional aspects (long, complicatedmovements) and you cannot compete inKrav Maga, there is no sporting element. Thereasons being, we train without rules, withoutlimitations.Training without rules or limitations DOESNOT mean that each session you are hurtingeach other, far from it. You are simply trainingyourself to do whatever might be necessary toprotect you or your loved ones you are notgiving your brain a limit to what it may be willingto do if you train with limitations, and neverpractice everything that ‘may’ be necessary itcould put you at a disadvantage. So why do we train without limiting thinking SIMPLE you need to always prepare yourselffor the worst case scenario because let’s behonest anything less that ‘worst case’ is abonus right?I want to ask you 4 simple questions tohelp you understand about worst-casescenarios.1. Which is worse? Being involved in a conflictsituation in the day or the night?2. Which is worse? The conflict situationinvolves one or more than one person who istrying to hurt you?3. Which is worse? The person(s) trying to hurtyou having some level of skill in fighting or theyhave no skill?4. Which is worse? The person(s) trying to hurtyou ‘may’ or may not have access to some typeof weapon such as a knife?THE HISTORY OF THE SYSTEM1 / IMI LICHTENFELDImi Lichtenfeld was born into aHungarian Jewish family and grew upin Bratislava. His father was a ChiefInspector in the police force andowned a gymnasium where he taughtself-defence. As a young man, Imi wasa successful boxer and wrestler. In the1930′s, riots threatened the Jewishpopulation of Bratislava. Imi helped todefend his Jewish community againstgangs and realised that sport hadlittle in common with real combat, andbegan developing a system of practicalself-defence for life threateningsituations. In 1940 Imi left his homeland to servein the Czech Legion and then settledin Israel. Israel’s leaders immediatelyrecognised Imi’s fighting skills and hebegan to train Israel’s first fightingunits in military close quarterscombat. This training includedfighting fitness, sentry removal andany other military-oriented problemsthat required a creative solution. He became the Chief Instructor ofPhysical Training in the Israel DefenceForces and it was during this timethat his system came to be calledKrav Maga.

krav maga training & youThe simple answers to the simple questionsI am of course hoping that your answers to thequestions are. That the worse case scenario is being in asituation at night involving more than one assailant who have some level of fighting skill and they do have access to a weapon. That is pretty much a worse case scenario foryou right? It certainly is for me!So that’s how we are preparing you for conflict when a situation begins we want you to bethinking that ‘There MAY be more than oneperson” involved. “They MAY have some levelof skill” and “They MAY have access to sometype of weapon”.To help prepare for that worse case scenario,Krav Maga gives you skills that you learn atyour own pace in the following areasThose skills are SELF DEFENCE TECHNIQUES,FIGHTING SKILLS AND DEFENSIVE TACTICSSelf Defence Techniques are physical skillssuch as blocks, movements and how to getyourself out of certain holds and grabs asquickly as possible. This includes self defence techniques to use ifyou are on the ground, if you slipped or fell andfound yourself in a difficult positionThe techniques also involve how to protectyourself in a situation where some sort ofweapon may be present. You’ll learn these techniques in every situationand practice for what might occur!it is in you so Krav Maga doesn’t change yourinstinctive reactions. It improves on what youdo naturally, to give you the highest possiblechance of protecting yourself or somebodyelse. When dealing with a situation you MAY, needto continue defending yourself even after theinitial conflict is over so Krav Maga trainingwill build your fighting skills to be able to dothis.Krav Maga teaches you how to use your body’snatural weapons for self defence, your hands, legs, feet, knees, elbows and fingers weredesigned for self-preservation to help reduceinjury to yourself if you trip over in the streetwhat do you naturally do? You place your handsout to reduce the impact of the fall! This is aninstinctive reaction and you need to build onthose reactions, which is exactly what KravMaga training does! When a football team play a match, theyhave tactics - methods they will use to defeatthe other team that work in-line with theirstrengths! This is the unique defensive tactics training ofKrav Maga. how you think, act and behave toavoid or deter the situation what do you doafter the situation where do you go? Who doyou call? Who do you need to help? Are thereany other dangers?Krav Maga is about gaining the right skills andhaving the correct attitude and abilities to copewhen fast moving, scary events happen. You’llsurprise yourself at how are you able to carryout what you learnt when it really matters andto make good decisions in stressful situationsAll of these techniques that you will learn arepracticed in every position that you could endup in standing up, sitting down, on the ground,in a crowded area or when with a loved one we must practice for what is likely to occur!Having said all this Krav Maga builds your instinctive reaction don’t try and change what is already in you!Everyone is different in age, height, weight, size, strength, flexibility, fitness andconfidence levels Every skill that you learn is built on yourinstinctive reaction. You cannot change instinct;PLEASE REMEMBER EVERYBODYIS DIFFERENT!

krav maga training & youTHEREFORE KRAV MAGA TRAINING IS AT APACE THAT SUITS YOUKrav Maga can be adapted to suit you and anylimitations you might have to say that KravMaga is only for those who are 21 years old, fitstrong and flexible is ridiculous as the systemwould be completely flawed unfortunately,we’re only 21 once!Krav Maga is for everyone meaning that it canalways be adapted! There is a fantastic clipon YouTube of a guy who is in a wheelchair learning to effectively defend himself usingKrav Maga. how many limitations does hehave? Many yet the system adapts for theindividual!Your journey so far if you’re ready to start yourKrav Maga journey then scroll to the end of thisguide to see a special offer, otherwise read on.Up until now you have learn about how KravMaga is taught, the skills that you will learn, the attitude and ability that you will develop HOWEVER, now it’s important that youunderstand WHY you need these skills Why should you learn Krav Maga?I want to tell you a story about my dog,Vallie!Yes, that’s right I am going to tell you aboutmy dog; I’m another annoying pet owner!Vallie is 3 Years old. She is a fantastic, placidand well tempered dog and from a distancecan seem quite intimidating as she looksstrong and just loves to run at people!Every morning, like clockwork Vallie goes intothe garden to do what dogs do. One morning,I let Vallie out as normal without realising myneighbour’s cat was sitting in the middle of thegrass intently enjoying the sun. Now, Vallie seesthe cat and runs straight up to her, and juststands literally wagging her tail. Meanwhile, the cat hasn’t realised Vallie is right behind her.Just so you know there is no way in the worldVallie would attack the cat, she just wants toplay. So oblivious to the danger the cat turns around, and finds herself face to face in the worst casescenario, right in front of her is a Dog!!What does the cat do? And how does this relateto Krav Maga training? For a spit-second the cat FROZE justmomentarily – she did nothing It then looked around for somewhere to run and decided she could not With no other choice, the cat made a loudscreeching hissing noise, raised its paws.made itself as big as possible and looked damnangry!THE HISTORY OF THE SYSTEM2 / EYAL YANILOVEyal Yanilov began practicing Krav Maga in1974, at the age of 15, under the personaltutelage of the system’s founder, ImiSde-Or. Eyal eventually became theGrandmaster’s closest student andassistant. He is the only individual towhom Imi personally awarded both theFounder’s Diploma of Excellence and thethen-unprecedented rank of Expert Level8 – the highest rank in Krav Maga.Together, Imi and Eyal wrote a series ofbooks laying out the principles of theKrav Maga system in an accessible format, aimed at the civilian sector. Soon after, ashead of the Israeli Krav Maga Association’sprofessional committee, Eyal createda new curriculum for Krav Maga, andtransformed it into an organized, formalsystem built on principles of action andunique instructional methods. Alongsideefforts to spread the discipline of KravMaga among the general public, Eyal wasalso training anti-terrorist units in Israelaccording to the principles of combat asexpressed in Krav Maga.Eventually, Eyal traveled abroad andbegan to teach the system in manycountries around the world. In the UnitedStates and Europe, Eyal taught Krav Magato special military and law enforcementunits, as well as to civilians. In order tomanage the challenge of making KravMaga truly international, Eyal foundedan interrnational federation and servedas its president, under the tutelage andwith the support of Grandmaster Imi. Inpractice, Eyal has personally trained allof the world’s first-generation Krav Magainstructors.

krav maga training & you“I loved the realistic techniques and the ‘dowhatever it takes’ approach to self defenceand knew then this was the best fit for meand I booked an quick-start class for theHertfordshire region– and have not lookedback!” Charlotte, London Club MemberVallie at this point was very surprised, shejumped backwards and the cat ran off and overthe fence. So where’s the Krav Maga?Simple, you are an animal; we all are just we areslightly more developed than others. However, our reactions in conflict are just the same asthe cat The only difference between the catand humans is that the cat is constantly aware, looking for dangers in the form of people, carsand other animals. Most humans aren’t thataware of their immediate surroundings.Ask yourself this question, if the cat had seenVallie from a distance running out of the backdoor what would the cat have done? What did she do first? She froze just for a splitsecond. In a conflict situation you will freeze. The second thing that the cat did was toattempt to run. This is what you should do when I say run, Idon’t mean you attempt to copy Usain Bolt andrun 100m in under ten seconds, it might justmean not getting in to a certain carriage onthe train, it might mean walking away from ataxi rank where you can see some trouble orindeed it might be running fast it just meansto move yourself away from the conflict. If all else fails, if you cannot avoid the conflictyou may have to protect yourself, to fight foryour safetyFLIGHT, FIGHT, FREEZE – These are ourprimitive stress responses!Remember Flight is to move awayFight is to protect yourself which couldsimply mean shouting, it doesn’t always meanimmediate physical self defence Freeze this is doing nothing we will ALLfreeze for how long we freeze is differentmatter Generally you would get hurt in conflict if youfreeze too long. The situation you are facedwith is so unfamiliar, so scary, fast moving andso unknown that you are not able to cope withwhat is going on in your body, the release ofadrenalin and having to make a good decisionas to what they should do!So what is the simple, effective aim ofKrav Maga training? Yes, you are correctto reduce the freeze. Learning to not freezein tricky situations is only the first step, KravMaga teaches you to make good decisions, quickly and effectively, giving you the bestpossible opportunity to remain safe. Why’s thisimportant?Because those who desire conflict with youhave a plan! They may have made their plan 3 seconds agowhen they saw you in the street or in the pubor in very worse case scenarios they may havebeen planning this confrontation for a longtime Your job, your first task, your mission is to breaktheir plan; disrupting their plan at the earliestpossible moment. With this in mind I want toshare with you another story to highlight theaim about training in Krav Maga with KravMaga Global (UK).Learning Krav Maga the right way meanslearning the right response first!About a year ago I was asked by a Krav MagaInstructor in another part of the country togo and review his lessons and how he wasteaching. He is a very committed instructorand is always looking for advice, guidance andfeedback for that, he should be commendedas it is very rare to find someone of his calibrewithout a large ego in the Martial Arts world.I went to visit the instructor. I watched hislesson. He was an inspiration to watch, hisskills were sharp, quick, focused and he lookedimpressive.

krav maga training & youOn the particular day that I went to watch him,he was teaching a group of beginners howto release themselves from the very trickysituation of being grabbed around the neckor throat. This is of course is a very dangerousposition to be in, so he went about explaininghow to get out of this situation through using aKrav Maga technique. His demonstrations werevery good and he got the students performingwell. At the end of the lesson we sat down and hewas keen to know what I thought I initially said to be honest, your technical skillsare very good indeed, impressive to watch andyou got everyone doing the technique to agood standard. However, the method in whichyou taught them was quite frankly hazardous! His face was a picture. This isn’t exactly whathe wanted or expected to hear. What did Imean by hazardous? He spent the whole lesson teaching peopletoo watch someone approach them, then grabthem by the neck, then practice the technique. Now, this is fine, yet what were they supposedto be learning? These are beginners remember. That’s right they were supposed to be learninghow to make good decisions. Now, I don’t knowabout you, however letting a stranger grab meby the throat seems like a poor choice!evade that contact first then learn how to dealwith it, if and only if, it became inevitable. In thescenario being taught the instructor had notconsidered how to disrupt the assailant plan.Remember what I said earlier they have a plan?In this case to grab the throat. So what shouldhe have taught? That’s right – how to break the plan!As the person approached you what couldyou have done? Moved away, shouted, pushthem back, stopped them from grabbing youor, if necessary, used force against them first!!(Don’t worry it’s perfectly legal, I’ll explain whyin a moment.)My final advice to the instructor was thatstudents learning techniques is good yetlearning about decision making, so that whensomeone approaches you take some action,do something, including if necessary doingnothing physical, just moving away and beingaware. You cannot prevent everything of course, onceyou have learnt what you could prevent, youshould THEN learn the techniques to get out ofthat situation.Does that make sense? Is it what you expected? My point to the instructor was that this group ofstudents needed to learn not how to deal witha situation before it had escalated to physicalcontact. They need to understand how toTHE KRAV MAGA GRADING SYSTEM1 / PRACTITIONER2 / GRADUATE.3 / EXPERTThe Practitioner Levels of Krav Maga arethe core of the system. You’ll learn how todefend against the most common attacks,as well as building on your fighting skillsand learning how to avoid a situation orwhat to do after a confrontation. Trainingalso improves fitness, strength, flexibilityand mental determination. You are eligible to move into the Graduateprogram 6 months after completing yourP5 grade. More advanced skills are taughtat G level, including dealing with morecomplicated situations. You are expectedto have a full understanding of all the Pgrades and continue to keep those skillsat a high level whilst you progress throughthe Graduate program.Expert Grades are held by very experiencedinstructors who have a complete understanding of Krav Maga, after passing thecoveted Expert Test. E Levels are normallyalso qualified to teach in more specialistareas such as the Military, Law Enforcement or Security Sector. You can take yourExpert Level exam in Israel 1 year afterpassing your Graduate Level 5.

krav maga training & you“I really enjoy training with KMG Global (UK), thebest thing for me about Krav Maga is the sense ofconfidence the system gives you, knowing what to doin difficult situations ” Remi, London Club MemberEvery situation unfolds like a story, somethinghappens, someone moves towards you maybethey say something or do something? If yourmind is not moving, not calculating what yourbest choice is right there and then then youare freezing too long. and that’s what getsyou grabbed. At Krav Maga Global (UK) you learn in thefollowing way A. Don’t be in ‘that’ situation where possibleB. If the situation starts, take some actionas EARLY AS POSSIBLEC. If you do not react early enough, use selfdefence skills quickly and efficient as youcanDuring training we are developing your abilityto make decisions, skills to defend yourselfand improving your fitness to help cope withthose situations.Talking about fitness, I haven’t mentioned thattoo much.Rarely does a boxer go into a boxing matchunfit why? Because he has to last, he has tobe able to carry on, and make decisions as towhat he is going to do next he doesn’t wantto give up .It is very much the same for self defencesituations you need to increase your fitness, tobe able to carry on protecting yourself or yourloved ones. You need be fit enough to be ableto clearly decide what to do next and not sotired that you choose to give up.The only difference is that if the boxer gives up,it’s just his pride that is lost and maybe a littlehurt. If it’s becoming too much for him, andhe’s about to get hurt, his coach can ‘throw inthe towel’ or the referee will decide when hehas had in enough. In conflict situations, we don’t have theseluxuries we have to be strong and ableenough, to do what is necessary!Fitness is very subjective, for an example, ifyou want to be fit enough to swim 40 lengths, research suggests you should go and swimregularly and work up to 40 lengths. If you want to run the marathon, start runninglong distances. It’s not rocket science is it?This is called the SAID principle, which standsfor, Specific Adaptation to Imposed Demands, simply your body adapts to what you ask of it.The website Athlepedia says:“SAID is a training principle that explains thata certain exercise or type of training producesadaptations specific to the activity performedand only in the muscles (and energy systems)that are stressed by the activity. It stands forSpecific Adaptation to Imposed Demands. To go one step further, according to the SAIDPrinciple, the body adapts in a specific fashionto the specific demands that are placed on it.”For example, if one does figure skating a lot,one will adapt to the specific skill and strengthdemands of figure skating (he or she willdevelop lower body

In fact, I am so confident that Krav Maga will get you the result you are looking for, that if you were training Krav Maga with a Krav Maga Global (UK) club , I'll offer you the following reassurance: We understand sometimes it's hard, you start off with the best of intentions and things just don't work out. We can provide you with all .
