Prevent Blindness, Ohio AffiliateA Message from our LeadershipCondensed Financial StatementYear ending March 31, 2021The Year of 2020 VisionAs we reflect on our 2020-2021 fiscal year, Prevent Blindness (PBO) can be proudthat we continued to offer a full range of sight saving services without hesitation,even though the pandemic brought many unexpected challenges. We quicklychanged the way in which we reach people so that our services could be deliveredin creative ways that used technology when in-person was not possible.It was also a year of planning for change in leadership. After 35 years of service asPresident & CEO of Prevent Blindness, Ohio Affiliate, Sherry Williams retired in2021. PBO’s Board of Directors already had a succession plan in place for manyyears to assure that our good work continues with strong leadership. Amy Pulles,Vice President of PBO and a long-time staff leader, will assume the role of President& CEO in 2022. As our commitment to you – our donors and partners – we are ingood hands!Even in these time of change, our focus has been steady in serving individuals athighest risk for vision problems – children under age 6, people with diabetes, ethnicgroups prone to glaucoma, seniors and those without financial resources to get theeye care they need. A full range of medical servicesare provided for thousands of uninsured and underinsured people from theNorthwest Ohio area every year, including vision services through PBO’s VisionCare Outreach Program.Patients are provided with vision screenings, comprehensive eye examinations,and donated eyewear.Vaishnavi Aradhyula, MS, MD Candidate and Executive Director ofCommunityCare Clinics, expressed her enthusiasm about implementing thescreenings at the clinic, as well as her commitment to assuring their sustainabilityin the future.PBO Maintains Highest GuideStar LevelPBO earned the highest level 2020Platinum Seal of Transparency fromGuideStar, the world’s largest source ofnonprofit information. To achieve thePlatinum level, extensive information wasadded to the PBO Nonprofit Profile: basiccontact and organizational information; indepth financial information; andquantitative information about goals,strategies, and progress toward ourmission.This recognition shows PBO’scommitment to transparency. PBO Provides Services to High Risk Groups, Educates and Advocates to Protect Vision Throughout a Lifetime2020 Research Fellows Present Findings at Virtual Vision ForumThe research findings of the recipients of PBO's 2020 Young Investigator StudentFellowship Awards for Female Scholars in Vision Research were shared during a virtualVision Research Scientific Forum with topics ranging from: retinopathy of prematuritythat occurs in infants; a treatment regimen for age-related macular degeneration (AMD);and a process that reduces the amount of farsightedness in infants.This PBO award provides training support for future generations of outstanding femalescientists committed to pursuing biomedical, behavioral or clinical research careersrelevant to the mission of Prevent Blindness.16th Annual Eyes on Capitol Hill goes VirtualOhio Members of Congress SteveStivers, Troy Balderson, Marcy Kaptur,Dave Joyce, Jim Jordan and Tim Ryan,and Senators Sherrod Brown and RobPortman joined PBO delegates for the16th annual Prevent Blindness “Eyes onCapitol Hill” advocacy days in February.Visits were virtual and focused on theimportance of vision and eye health andhow PBO helps their constituents enjoygood sight for life.This year’s Eyes on Capitol Hilladvocates asked Ohio’s elected officialsto restore the CDC’s Vision HealthInitiative (VHI) with 5 million andmaintain the CDC’s work in GlaucomaPrevention with 4 million.U.S. Congressman, Steve Stivers (bottom) serves as aco-chair of the Congressional Vision Caucus and is a pastPBO Board of Directors member.PBO Volunteer Leaders Named to Patient Engagement ProgramAnn MorrisonOhio State UniversityCollege of OptometryCatherine UrbanoCase Western ReserveSchool of MedicineYoustina BolokNortheast OhioMedical UniversityPBO is Grateful for Support from Ohio Drivers and theSave Our Sight Fund for Children’s Vision ScreeningsPrevent Blindness received a grant for the periodJuly 1, 2020 through June 30, 2021 from theSave Our Sight (SOS) Fund for PBO to train andcertify 1,000 children’s vision screeners atprimary healthcare practices and public/privatechild care organizations and schools. The fundingcomes from Ohioans who donate 1 or more toSOS when they renew their Ohio motor vehicleregistrations.Funding also provides for the purchase of visionscreening equipment kits. PBO worked inconjunction with the Ohio Department of Healthand the National Center for Children’s Vision andEye Health to develop a new vision screeningtraining/certification program to support the newnational universal preschool vision screeningrecommendations.6Kylie (Glass) Gang, PBO Board Member,and her mother Laura Glass (Alliance,Ohio) were recently invited to serve asexpert advisory board members for thePrevent Blindness A.S.P.E.C.T. (Advocacy,Support, Perspective, Empowerment,Communication and Training ) PatientEngagement Program.They were invited to partner with PreventBlindness on this unique program becauseof their life-long personal experience withvision challenges and leadershipexperience in advocating for wider accessto vision and eye health information andresources.Kylie Gang (L) and Laura GlassAll three of the Glass children hadsignificant vision problems from an earlyage, including Kylie. Two of them hadcongenital cataracts.PBO Receives CARES Grant for Necessary UpgradesPBO was very grateful to be one of 110Central Ohio agencies to receive CARES(Coronavirus Aid, Relief, and EconomicSecurity) Act funding.A 7,800 grant, provided through the City ofColumbus, allowed for the replacement ofoutdated technology that was essential to bein working order with increased remoteworking schedules due to COVID.Prevent Blindness, Ohio Affiliate 2020-2021 Annual Report

Both of his children were signed up to receive eye exams and new glasses at no cost.“This has been tremendously helpful to both of them and has helped them in school. My daughter has an especially significant eyecondition and her vision decreased drastically in just a year. She wasn’t able to see well while walking in the halls or sitting in class.Her glasses have helped her and have given her confidence.”During his daughter’s vision screening at school, Adan told the school liaison that he thought he, too, needed glasses and that hehad never been to an eye doctor because he had no insurance. The liaison completed Adan’s application for assistance from PBO.“I am so grateful that I had this opportunity for a free eye exam and glasses. I wear my glasses every day.
