The Collect, Post Communion Prayer, Readings and Musicfor the 8.00am, 9.00am, 11.45am and 6.00pm servicesThe Collect for The 165th Anniversary of St John’sAlmighty God,to whose glory we celebrate the 165th anniversaryof the first offering of worshipin this house of prayer:we praise you for the many blessingsyou have given to those who have worshipped you here:and we pray that all who seek you in this place may find you, and, being filled with the Holy Spirit, may become a living temple acceptable to you;through Jesus Christ your Son our Lord, who is alive and reigns with you,in the unity of the Holy Spirit, one God, now and for ever. Amen.Post Communion for The 165th Anniversary of St John’sFather in heaven, whose Church on earth is a sign of your heavenly peace,an image of the new and eternal Jerusalem:grant to us in the days of our pilgrimagethat, fed with the living bread of heaven, and united in the body of your Son,we may be the temple of your presence, the place of your glory on earth, and a sign of your peace in the world;through Jesus Christ our Lord. Amen.First Reading: Jonah 3.10-end of 4When God saw what the people of Nineveh did, how they turned from their evilways, God changed his mind about the calamity that he had said he would bringupon them; and he did not do it. But this was very displeasing to Jonah, and hebecame angry. He prayed to the LORD and said, ‘O LORD! Is not this what I saidwhile I was still in my own country? That is why I fled to Tarshish at the beginning; for I knew that you are a gracious God and merciful, slow to anger, andabounding in steadfast love, and ready to relent from punishing. And now, OLORD, please take my life from me, for it is better for me to die than to live.’ Andthe LORD said, ‘Is it right for you to be angry?’ Then Jonah went out of the cityand sat down east of the city, and made a booth for himself there. He sat under itin the shade, waiting to see what would become of the city. The LORD God appointed a bush, and made it come up over Jonah, to give shadeover his head, to save him from his discomfort; so Jonah was very happy aboutthe bush. But when dawn came up the next day, God appointed a worm thatattacked the bush, so that it withered. When the sun rose, God prepared a sultryeast wind, and the sun beat down on the head of Jonah so that he was faint andasked that he might die. He said, ‘It is better for me to die than to live.’4

But God said to Jonah, ‘Is it right for you to be angry about the bush?’ And hesaid, ‘Yes, angry enough to die.’ Then the LORD said, ‘You are concerned aboutthe bush, for which you did not labour and which you did not grow; it came intobeing in a night and perished in a night. And should I not be concerned aboutNineveh, that great city, in which there are more than a hundred and twentythousand people who do not know their right hand from their left, and also manyanimals?’AllThis is the Word of the Lord. Thanks be to God.Psalm 145. vs 1-8 (9.00am and 11.45am)1. I will magnify thee, O God, my King : and I will praise thy Name for ever andever.2. Every day will I give thanks unto thee : and praise thy Name for ever and ever.3. Great is the Lord, and marvellous worthy to be praised : there is no end of hisgreatness.4. One generation shall praise thy works unto another : and declare thy power.5. As for me, I will be talking of thy worship : thy glory, thy praise, and wondrousworks;6. So that men shall speak of the might of thy marvellous acts : and I will also tellof thy greatness.7. The memorial of thine abundant kindness shall be shewed : and men shallsing of thy righteousness.8. The Lord is gracious, and merciful : long-suffering, and of great goodness.Glory be to the Father, and to the Son : and to the Holy Ghost; As it was in the beginning, is now, and ever shall be : world without end. Amen.Second Reading: Philippians 1.21-endFor to me, living is Christ and dying is gain. If I am to live in the flesh, thatmeans fruitful labour for me; and I do not know which I prefer. I am hardpressed between the two: my desire is to depart and be with Christ, for that is farbetter; but to remain in the flesh is more necessary for you. Since I am convincedof this, I know that I will remain and continue with all of you for your progressand joy in faith, so that I may share abundantly in your boasting in Christ Jesuswhen I come to you again.Only, live your life in a manner worthy of the gospel of Christ, so that, whether Icome and see you or am absent and hear about you, I will know that you arestanding firm in one spirit, striving side by side with one mind for the faith of thegospel, and are in no way intimidated by your opponents. For them this isevidence of their destruction, but of your salvation. And this is God’s doing. Forhe has graciously granted you the privilege not only of believing in Christ, but ofsuffering for him as well – since you are having the same struggle that you saw Ihad and now hear that I still have.AllThis is the Word of the Lord. Thanks be to God.5

Gospel Reading: Matthew 20.1-16Jesus said to his disciples: ‘The kingdom of heaven is like a landowner who wentout early in the morning to hire labourers for his vineyard. After agreeing with thelabourers for the usual daily wage, he sent them into his vineyard. When he wentout about nine o'clock, he saw others standing idle in the market-place; and hesaid to them, “You also go into the vineyard, and I will pay you whatever is right.”So they went. When he went out again about noon and about three o'clock, he didthe same. And about five o'clock he went out and found others standing around;and he said to them, “Why are you standing here idle all day?” They said to him,“Because no one has hired us.” He said to them, “You also go into the vineyard.”When evening came, the owner of the vineyard said to his manager, “Call thelabourers and give them their pay, beginning with the last and then going to thefirst.” When those hired about five o'clock came, each of them received the usualdaily wage. Now when the first came, they thought they would receive more; buteach of them also received the usual daily wage. And when they received it, theygrumbled against the landowner, saying, “These last worked only one hour, andyou have made them equal to us who have borne the burden of the day and thescorching heat.” But he replied to one of them, “Friend, I am doing you no wrong;did you not agree with me for the usual daily wage? Take what belongs to you andgo; I choose to give to this last the same as I give to you. Am I not allowed to dowhat I choose with what belongs to me? Or are you envious because I amgenerous?” So the last will be first, and the first will be last.’AllThis is the Gospel of the Lord.Praise to you, O Christ.Offertory HymnLord, for the years (NEP619)1. Lord, for the years your love has kept and guided, urged and inspired us, cheered us on our way, sought us and saved us, pardoned and provided:Lord for the years, we bring our thanks today.2. Lord, for that word, the word of life which fires us,speaks to our hearts and sets our souls ablaze, teaches and trains, rebukes us and inspires us:Lord of the word, receive your people's praise.3. Lord, for our land, in this our generation, spirits oppressed by pleasure, wealth and care;for young and old, for commonwealth and nation,Lord of our land, be pleased to hear our prayer.4. Lord, for our world; where men disown and doubt him, loveless in strength, and comfortless in pain;hungry and helpless, lost indeed without him,Lord of the world, we pray that Christ may reign.5. Lord for ourselves; in living pow’r remake us,self on the cross and Christ upon the throne;past put behind us, for the future take us:Lord of our lives, to live for Christ alone.Tune: LORD OF THE YEARS Michael Baughen arranged David IliffWords: Timothy Dudley-Smith7

Communion HymnBe known to us in breaking bread1. Be known to us in breaking bread, but do not then depart;Saviour, abide with us, and spreadthy table in our heart.2. There sup with us in love divine;thy Body and thy Blood, that living bread, that heavenly wine,be our immortal food.Tune: BELMONT melody by William Gardiner 1770-1853, harmonized inRevised Church Hymnary 1927Psalm 132 (6.00pm)1. O Lord our Governor, how excellent is thy Name in all the world * thou that hasset thy glory above the heavens!2. Out of the mouth of very babes and sucklings hast thou ordained strength, because of thine enemies * that thou mightest still the enemy, and the avenger.3. For I will consider thy heavens, even the works of thy fingers * the moon andthe stars, which thou hast ordained.4. What is man, that thou art mindful of him * and the son of man, that thouvisitest him?5. Thou madest him lower than the angels * to crown him with glory and worship.6. Thou makest him to have dominion of the works of thy hands * and thou hastput all things in subjection under his feet;7. All sheep and oxen * yea, and the beasts of the field;8. The fowls of the air, and the fishes of the sea * and whatsoever walketh throughthe paths of the seas.9. O Lord our Governor * how excellent is thy Name in all the world!Glory be to the Father, and to the Son * and to the Holy Ghost; As it was in the beginning, is now, and ever shall be * world without end. Amen.First Reading (6.00pm): Jeremiah 7.1-11The word that came to Jeremiah from the LORD: Stand in the gate of the LORD’shouse, and proclaim there this word, and say, Hear the word of the LORD, all youpeople of Judah, you that enter these gates to worship the LORD. Thus says theLORD of hosts, the God of Israel: Amend your ways and your doings, and let medwell with you in this place. Do not trust in these deceptive words: ‘This is thetemple of the LORD, the temple of the LORD, the temple of the LORD.’For if you truly amend your ways and your doings, if you truly act justly one withanother, if you do not oppress the alien, the orphan, and the widow, or shedinnocent blood in this place, and if you do not go after other gods to your ownhurt, then I will dwell with you in this place, in the land that I gave of old to yourancestors for ever and ever. Here you are, trusting in deceptive words to no avail. Will you steal, murder, commit adultery, swear falsely, make offerings to Baal, and go after other godsthat you have not known, and then come and stand before me in this house, which is called by my name, and say, ‘We are safe!’—only to go on doing all theseabominations? Has this house, which is called by my name, become a den ofrobbers in your sight? You know, I too am watching, says the LORD.Here endeth the First Reading.8

Second Reading (6.00pm): Luke 19.1-10He entered Jericho and was passing through it. A man was there namedZacchaeus; he was a chief tax-collector and was rich. He was trying to see whoJesus was, but on account of the crowd he could not, because he was short instature. So he ran ahead and climbed a sycomore tree to see him, because he wasgoing to pass that way. When Jesus came to the place, he looked up and said tohim, ‘Zacchaeus, hurry and come down; for I must stay at your house today.’ Sohe hurried down and was happy to welcome him. All who saw it began to grumbleand said, ‘He has gone to be the guest of one who is a sinner.’ Zacchaeus stoodthere and said to the Lord, ‘Look, half of my possessions, Lord, I will give to thepoor; and if I have defrauded anyone of anything, I will pay back four times asmuch.’ Then Jesus said to him, ‘Today salvation has come to this house, becausehe too is a son of Abraham. For the Son of Man came to seek out and to save thelost.’Here endeth the Second ReadingAnthem (6.00pm) Te Deum in B-flat (Charles Villiers Stanford)WE praise thee, O God : we acknowledge thee to be the Lord. All the earth doth worship thee : the Father everlasting. To thee all Angels cry aloud : the heavens, and all the powers therein. To thee Cherubin and Seraphin : continually do cry,Holy, Holy, Holy : Lord God of Sabaoth;Heaven and earth are full of the Majesty : of thy glory. The glorious company of the Apostles : praise thee. The goodly fellowship of the Prophets : praise thee. The noble army of Martyrs : praise thee. The holy Church throughout all the world : doth acknowledge thee; The Father : of an infinite Majesty;Thine honourable, true : and only Son;Also the Holy Ghost : the Comforter.Thou art the King of Glory : O Christ.Thou art the everlasting Son : of the Father. When thou tookest upon thee to deliver man : thou didst not abhor the Virgin'swomb. When thou hadst overcome the sharpness of death : thou didst open the kingdomof heaven to all believers.Thou sittest at the right hand of God : in the glory of the Father. We believe that thou shalt come : to be our Judge. We therefore pray thee, help thy servants : whom thou hast redeemed with thyprecious blood.Make them to be numbered with thy Saints : in glory everlasting.O Lord, save thy people : and bless thine heritage.Govern them : and lift them up for ever.Day by day : we magnify thee; And we worship thy Name : ever world without end.Vouchsafe, O Lord : to keep us this day without sin.O Lord, have mercy upon us : have mercy upon us.O Lord, let thy mercy lighten upon us : as our trust is in thee.O Lord, in thee have I trusted : let me never be confounded.9
