PASTOR’S COLUMNSunday of the Word of God - On September 30, 2019, onthe Feast of St. Jerome the great Scripture Scholar, PopeFrancis in an Apostolic Letter entitled Aperuit Illis declaredthat beginning this year, the 3rd Sunday in Ordinary Time, that is today, would be known as the Sunday of the Word ofGod. The title of the document comes from this verse in St.Luke’s Gospel: “He opened their minds to understand theScriptures.” (Lk 24:45) That verse is part of the passage fromthe walk Jesus had with two disciples on their way back fromJerusalem along the road to Emmaus on the evening of Hisresurrection. Recall that they did not recognize Jesus. TheHoly Father went on to say: “This was one of the final acts ofthe risen Lord before his Ascension. Jesus appeared to theassembled disciples, broke bread with them and openedtheir minds to the understanding of the sacred Scriptures. Tothem, amid their fear and bewilderment, he unveiled themeaning of the paschal mystery: that in accordance with theFather’s eternal plan he had to suffer and rise from the dead,in order to bring repentance and the forgiveness of sins (cf.Lk 24:26.46-47). He then promised to send the Holy Spirit, who would give them strength to be witnesses of this savingmystery (cf. Lk 24:49).”their study and reflection on the Acts of the Apostles and inmid March will begin a brief five session study of the Eucharist in Sacred Scripture. Mark Chasse, who gives leadershipto the Scripture Study Group can always be contacted formore information at mchasse1@comcast.net. I also encourage you to incorporate reading some scripture into your personal prayer. Not sure where to begin reading the Bible? Iwould suggest one of the Gospels as a good place to start. In that most of our Sunday Gospels this year will be fromMatthew, that might even narrow it down more as a place tostart. So as to highlight even a little more, the place of the Word ofGod in our Sunday worship, the Readers will process in withthe Book of the Gospels, and we will use incense before theproclamation of the Gospel.Christmas Collection - I would like to highlight andacknowledge and give thanks to everyone who made a special monetary gift to the parish through your Christmas offering! As noted in a previous bulletin, the in pew Christmascollection between both worship sites was 25,003. SAINT PAUL SCHOOL NEWSRELIGIOUS ED NEWSOUR NEW RELIGIOUS ED CURRICULUMThe Gospel Weeklies connect our kids to the Gospel eachweek in relevant and meaningful ways. This innovativeprogram spans grade levels 1-8 and unites our children, not only with the Gospel, but with their siblings and parentsas well. Experiencing Mass together weekly as a family isone of the deepest blessings we, as Catholics, receive. From Promise (gr. 1) to Good News (gr. 2 & 3) to Venture(gr. 4, 5 & 6) to Visions (gr. 7 & 8), students are guidedthrough the Gospels alongside their parents, in an agerelatable manner. For example, in this week’s Gospel,Jesus calls His disciples to drop their nets and follow Him.For our youngest children (Promise), the focus of theirlesson is the vital truth that Jesus is their friend, while ouryoung teens (Visions) are invited to embrace their ownunique vocation (or calling) in their lesson.Saint Paul Schoolis now taking applications for the2020-2021 academic year.PreK through Grade 8To learn more about Saint Paul School, please contact Admissions Director,Kelly Esposito, 860-828-4343 x136admissions@stpaulkensington.org.Visit our website and social media s to all of our alumni who joined us on Jan. 20thfor our Annual Alumni Basketball Game! Michael Englert, OFM Conv. The third Sunday in Ordinary Time, by Papal initiative, isto be observed as a special day devoted to “the celebration, study and dissemination of the Word of God”.Saint Jerome, famously said: "Ignorance of Scripture isignorance of Christ". Although the Mass is replete with somuch scripture, Catholics often feel overwhelmed in tryingto read the Word of God on their own. Here at St. Paul we have many parishioners who havebeen reading the Word in small groups every other weekfor approximately three months. These Scripture Studygroups have just completed the Acts of the Apostles.Reading how the Early Church Christians were being ledby the Holy Spirit in amazing ways, and even in very ordinary ways, we can come to appreciate that their experiences were not at all different from how the Spirit of Godleads us in our lives today. We are currently planning a new study to look at theWord of God and how He speaks to us through both theOld and New Testaments about His Gift of the Eucharist. There will be an Scripture Study Information Session onThursday, February 20th from 7-8:30pm in the St. PaulChurch Hall. Meetings will begin the week of March 16th.More details will be posted in the bulletin soon.We pray that you will take to heart Pope Francis’ encouragement as well as the Holy Spirit’s promptings and stepforward that you can be guided privately and in a group toHear His Word and be inspired to share what you haveheard.HOSPITAL VISITS Our friars will be happy to visit you oryour loved one in the hospital if you kindly let us knowwhen you are there.
