In 1986, Dr. Shaffreyreceived his medical degree from the University of Virginia. He completed his general surgicalinternship at Naval Hospital San Diego in 1987 where he was named the surgical intern of theyear. He completed both neurosurgical and orthopaedics residencies at the University ofVirginia. A spine fellowship in pediatric and adult reconstructive spine surgery was completed in1995.Following completion of his surgical training, he was appointed to the senior staff in theDepartments of Neurological Surgery and Orthopaedic Surgery at Henry Ford Hospital where hewas actively involved in treating members of Detroit’s college and professional athletic teams. In1999, Dr. Shaffrey was appointed Associate Professor of Neurological Surgery and AdjunctAssociate Professor of Orthopaedic Surgery and Sports Medicine at the University ofWashington in Seattle. In 2003, he returned to the University of Virginia as Professor ofNeurological Surgery and Director of the Neurosurgery Spine Division. In 2008, he was namedHarrison Distinguished Teaching Professor of Neurological and Orthopaedic Surgery. OnSeptember 1, 2018 Dr. Shaffrey became the Chief of Duke’s Spine Division. Dr. Shaffrey isboard certified in the fields of Neurological Surgery and Orthopaedic Surgery.Dr. Shaffrey has an active research interest in spinal surgery, particularly in numerousmulticenter outcome research studies of pediatric and adult scoliosis, spinal trauma and tumorsinvolving the spinal column. He has been a funded principal investigator in numerous grants andclinical trials. He serves on the Editorial Boards of Journal of Neurosurgery, Neurosurgery andJournal of Spinal Disorders. Dr. Shaffrey has greater than 100 publications, greater than 500national and international presentations and served as editor for several textbooks on spinalsurgery.During his career in medicine, Dr. Shaffrey has won numerous awards for clinical medicine. Hehas won the Counsel of State Neurosurgical Societies Young Neurosurgeons Award. He hasbeen named to Best Doctors and Top Doctors numerous times. He has an active role in organizedneurosurgery and spinal surgery. He has been the Chair for the AANS/CNS Joint Section onDisorders of the Spine and Peripheral Nerves. He has served as the Morbidity and MortalityCommittee Chair for the Scoliosis Research Society. He has been named to numerous honoraryacademic societies including the American Orthopaedic Association and the American Academyof Neurological Surgery.Shabbar Danish, MD – Rutgers Cancer Institute, Rutgers, NJSince coming to Rutgers Robert Wood Johnson Medical School in 2008, Dr. Danish has beeninvolved in re-designing the care of patients with brain and spine tumors in this region. Hecompleted his undergraduate training at Rutgers University, and his medical degree at UMDNJRobert Wood Johnson Medical School. He obtained his neurosurgical training at the Universityof Pennsylvania, along with fellowship training in Stereotactic and Functional Neurosurgery aswell as GammaKnife Radiosurgery.

Dr. Danish has a strong interest in minimally and noninvasive solutions to treat brain and spinecancer. He has research interests and publications in both fields.Dr. Danish developed the Laser Ablation Program at Rutgers. Much of what has been learnedand developed has been accomplished at this institution. He is also the director for the RWJGammaKnife Center. He has authored dozens of peer-reviewed articles and several book chapters as well winning thefollowing awards:Innovator of the Year Award, NJ Biz, 2012: Development of the Center for Brain Tumor LaserAblationInnovator of the year Award, NJ Biz, 2011: Development of a Multidisciplinary Center for thetreatment of Parkinson’s diseaseAANS Gildenburg Research Award in Stereotactic and Functional Neurosurgery, 2008Zoher Ghogawala, MD, FAANS – Lahey Clinic & Hospital, Burlington, MADr. Ghogawala serves as the Charles A. Fager Chair of Neurosurgery at Lahey Hospital andMedical Center and is Associate Professor of Neurosurgery at Tufts University School ofMedicine. His clinical specialty is the surgical treatment of patients with spine disorders, carotiddisease, and pituitary brain tumors. As Co-Director of the Comparative Effectiveness Research Institute, he is a thought-leader andresearcher in the areas of comparative and cost-effectiveness, and neurosurgical outcomes, exploring the value, benefits and sometimes harmful results of different treatment options. Hewas the principal investigator of the national SLIP study—a randomized clinical trial thatcompared fusion versus no fusion following spinal decompression.Dr. Ghogawala has recently received NIH and PCORI funding support to conduct a multi-centerprospective randomized control trial that aims to compare ventral versus dorsal surgery optionsfor cervical spondylotic myelopathy.Dr. Ghogawala recently edited and published a textbook entitled, The Evidence for Neurosurgeryand he has co-authored the newly updated Lumbar Fusion Guidelines. He has served as the VicePresident of the Congress of Neurological Surgeons and is active on the executive committee forAANS/CNS Joint Section on Disorders of the Spine and Peripheral Nerves. He served as theScientific Program Chair for the 2015 Cervical Spine Research Society Meeting and was also theAnnual Program Chair for the 2016 Spine Section Meeting. He is also on the Board of Directorsof the North American Spine Society (NASS) and the Cervical Spine Research Society.Dr. Ghogawala completed his undergraduate degree at Harvard University, and graduated fromHarvard Medical School in 1991.
