BRANDED CONTENT – LOS ANGELES BUSINESS JOURNAL 35NOVEMBER 8, 2021KEYNOTE SPEAKERA Look at this Year’s Keynote Presenter Dr. Tom LeightonCEO & Co-Founder of Akamai TechnologiesFew, if any, know the IT and artificial intelligence space as well as Dr. Tom Leighton, the CEO & co-founder of Akamai Technologies. Dr. Leighton also happens to be thisyear’s ORBIE Awards keynote speaker.Dr. Leighton co-founded Akamai Technologies in 1998 and served as the company’schief scientist until he became CEO in 2013.Under his leadership, Akamai has evolvedfrom its origins as a Content Delivery Network(CDN) into one of the most essential andtrusted cloud delivery and cybersecurity platforms, upon which many of the world’s leadingbrands and enterprises build and secure theirdigital experiences. As one of the world’s preeminent authorities on algorithms for network applicationsand cybersecurity, Dr. Leighton discovered asolution to freeing up web congestion usingapplied mathematics and distributed computing. Akamai used this technology to create theworld’s largest distributed computing platform, which today delivers and secures tens of millions of requests per second to billions of usersaround the world.“Akamai’s mission is to make the Internetfast, intelligent, and secure,” said Dr. Leighton.“We enable and protect business online for theworld’s leading enterprises, helping them todeliver fast, intelligent and secure online experiences. We do this though our intelligent edgeplatform that spans the world in more than4,000 locations and through our cybersecurityportfolio that generated 1 billion in revenuelast year and grew 25% over the year before.”During Dr. Leighton’s time as CEO, Akamai’s revenue has more than doubled, growingfrom less than 1.4 billion in 2012 to 3.2 billion in 2020, while earnings per share has morethan tripled. Over the same period, annualrevenue from Akamai’s security business grewfrom less than 25 million to more than 1 billion, growing 25% year-over-year in 2020.“I am so immensely proud of and gratefulfor the hard work of all the Akamai employees who have worked alongside me for thepast two decades to fulfill a vision,” added Dr.Leighton. “It all started in the 1990s, whenTim Berners-Lee, who was down the hall fromsupport millions of enterprises and billions ofpeople everywhere,” Dr. Leighton continued.“We’ve scaled successfully thanks to our talented employees and the skilled work they doon behalf of our customers and the billions ofInternet users around the world. Through upsand downs – from the dot com crash and 9/11of 20 years ago, through the financial crisisof 2008, and now this worldwide pandemic– Akamai employees have continued theircan-do attitude and customer-first mindset, enabling our platform to manage more traffic, more web transactions, and more cyberattacksthan ever before. Their creativity, teamworkand tenacity are key to what makes Akamaisuch a unique and strong growth company.”Dr. Leighton holds more than 50 patentsinvolving content delivery, Internet protocols, algorithms for networks, cryptography anddigital rights management. He and Akamai’sco-founder Danny Lewin were inducted intothe National Inventors Hall of Fame in 2017for having invented the methods needed tointelligently replicate and deliver content overa large network of distributed servers.“To be honored by the National Inventors Hall of Fame is a recognition I accept onbehalf of all the people who have contributedto Akamai, and all the people who inspiredand taught me,” explained Dr. Leighton. “Weknew we were on to something on one day inMarch 1999, when other platforms crashedwhile they tried to deliver the NCAA’s MarchMadness for ESPN and a new trailer that wasstreamed online for the Star Wars film, ThePhantom Menace. Akamai’s intelligent edgeplatform successfully handled an unprecedented volume of hits that day for ESPN andfor Entertainment Tonight, the only site thatshowed the trailer that evening that didn’tcrash.”In 2018, the Marconi Society selected Dr.Leighton to receive the Marconi Prize for “hisfundamental contributions to technology andthe establishment of content delivery networks.” He is also a member of the NationalAcademy of Sciences, the National Academyof Engineers, and the American Academy ofArts and Sciences.‘Akamai was founded with the vision of enabling the Internet to scaleso that it could support millions of enterprises and billions of people everywhere. We’ve scaled successfully thanks to our talented employeesand the skilled work they do.’me at MIT, predicted Internet congestionwould be a problem – ultimately, they calledit the ‘World Wide Wait’ – and he challengedsome of us at MIT to solve the problem. Fromthe beginning, we have always believed thatthe best way to deliver content and protectassets on the Internet is through a distributededge platform or edge network, close to wherethe end users are. Thanks to the hard work ofso many talented people over 23 years, thatvision has grown into the Akamai we knowtoday.”“Akamai was founded with the vision ofenabling the Internet to scale so that it could033 49 Orbie.indd 35Dr. Leighton has served on numerousgovernment, industry and academic advisorypanels. He also supports numerous charitableorganizations dedicated to improving STEMeducation and opportunities for K-12 students, including The Center for Excellence in Education, the Society for Science and the Public(sponsor of the Intel Science Search), TheMathematical Association of America (sponsor of the Math Olympiad), the Math Competition for Girls, and Girls Who Code.Dr. Leighton graduated summa cum laudefrom Princeton University in 1978 with aB.S.E. in Electrical Engineering and ComputerScience. He received his Ph.D. in AppliedMathematics from MIT in 1981.“Research has shown that students who areexposed earlier to hands-on STEM learningopportunities, in culturally relevant ways, show increased interest in STEM,” commentedDr. Leighton. “For this reason, the AkamaiFoundation supports learning experiences forstudents like the ISEF (International Scienceand Engineering Fair) and Girls Who Code, and STEM education in general, with a focuson the pursuit of excellence in mathematicsin grades K-12. Our foundation also makesgrants to local and nongovernment organizations around the world to help them developSTEM-related skills in populations that areunderrepresented in today’s technology workforce.”Touching on ways to improve equity in theSTEM field, Dr. Leighton shared his belief thatimprovement will come when more employersmake a concerted effort to train and recruitpeople from populations that are underrepresented in STEM professions.“We started the Akamai Technical Academy to train people without STEM backgroundsfor technical roles at our company. The program has proven to be successful in launchingcareers in tech, particularly for women and forpeople of color, and the outcome and resultshave been beneficial to our company and ourworkforce. Harvard Business School recentlypublished a case study about it, touting themodel and its achievements.”11/3/21 1:00 PM

36 LOS ANGELES BUSINESS JOURNAL – BRANDED CONTENTNOVEMBER 8, 2021LEADERSHIP AWARDA discussion with this year’s ORBIE Leadership Award honoree, Mary Gendron,Senior Vice President and Chief Information Officer of Qualcomm, Inc.The CIO of the Year ORBIE Leadership Awardwill be presented this year to Mary Gendron, who serves as senior vice president and chiefinformation officer at Qualcomm Incorporated.Gendron was chosen for the honor in largepart due to her proven track record of successfultechnology leadership throughout her career. Shehas made significant contributions to – and had ameaningful impact within the Southern Californiatechnology and business community, while inspiring others through her personal, professional andcivic contributions. For her exceptional work at Qualcomm andbeyond, her accomplishments have been acknowledged by peers, industry leaders and prior ORBIEwinners, and she is clearly deserving of this year’shonor. The Los Angeles Business Journal had a conversation with Gendron to learn more about herinnovative work at Qualcomm and her perspectiveson the evolving role of CIOs and the IT landscapein general.Congratulations on earning the annualORBIES Leadership Award! In yourmind, what does it take to be anaccomplished IT leader in 2021?Thank you, this is a true honor.IT is such an exciting place to be! Theworld is ever changing and every day it’s evolving more rapidly than it was the day before.Technology change is accelerating, data isexploding, geopolitical climates shifting, andnew business models are evolving. An IT leader’s success hinges on speed and agility—it’sessential to embrace the momentum.Technology is becoming more complex; it’sgetting better and faster. At the same time, weare more connected, and business opportunitieschange rapidly. IT leaders need to orchestrateenvironments that help business stakeholdersdo their jobs better—environments wherethe speed of decision making, solutions, andresponses can support the organization’sdynamic business. This requires expertise in proactively leading change by strategically aligning the ITfunction to the highest priorities of the broaderbusiness; making continuous measurement, refinement, and monitoring part of the organization’s DNA; and shaping a culture thatthrives on being limitless—one that looksbeyond what’s happening now and focuseson connecting longer-term dots that enableemployees to innovate and help shape trends. You have to do better than simply matchingthe needs of the workforce you’re supporting. You must get out in front of them. How has the pandemic changed thenature of CIO leadership? From the onset of the pandemic, I knewthat it was critical to lead with empathy. Whileall our life circumstances are different, we caneach understand another person’s frame ofreference when we consider their unique situation. Taking a genuine interest in your teamand approaching them in a way that showsyou understand their challenges and feelingshelps them feel supported. While I have alwaysstrived to be empathetic, the coronavirus pandemic amplified its significance. In addition, the pandemic showed us theimportance of enabling our business in a con-033 49 Orbie.indd 36‘I’ve found that collaboration andsupport generally come through a trueinterest in learning and active listening,no matter the level of employee andthe c-suite is no exception.’community of IT professionals who are unitedand working toward a set of overarching goals– creating a common linkage, direction, strategy, and values that drive the individual capabilities in the same direction. It supports aligning the IT function to the highest priorities ofthe broader business and allows us to make thebiggest difference by creating the most businessvalue. We can do more together. In addition,OneIT creates a brand that helps our businessstakeholders understand who we are.MARY GENDRONSenior Vice President and Chief Information OfficerQualcomm, Inc.nected world, allowing people to work fromanywhere in a secure manner. Qualcomm hadbeen enabling this vision, but in fact it wasn’tuntil the pandemic hit that what we had beenworking on as possibility, quickly moved froma nice to have to a critical need. As a result ofthinking ahead we were able to navigate theearly days of the pandemic quite nicely. Someof the challenges we’ve experienced during thepast two years have always been there, but thepandemic has given us the ability to reimaginethe workplace and workforce of the future innew and exciting ways. How does an effective CIO achievecollaboration and support from theother members of the C-Suite?I’ve found that collaboration and supportgenerally come through a true interest in learning and active listening, no matter the levelof employee and the c-suite is no exception.Top executives want to know that you understand and appreciate their top issues. CIOsneed to bring insight that spans the business, not just the IT function—this is part of getting out in front of the workforce. You haveto spend enough time building relationships, understanding the business imperatives, andunderstanding the world so you can see issuesthrough the other c-suite members’ lenses.Approaching work in this way enables youto be proactive and anticipate the solutionsthat IT can provide to create the most businessvalue. Typically, other members of the c-suitedon’t initially consider what they need fromIT. It’s the CIO’s job to take initiative, to showhow IT can be a differentiator and how it canhelp accelerate the organizational strategy. What’s the most meaningful technologytrend you’ve observed in the last10 years, in terms of impact on theworkplace?Considering the rate of change, it’s impossible to choose just one technology trend. Somany trends have impacted our workforce. We are able to process extremely large datasets thanks to the evolution of IT architectureand the cloud, and those data sets are alwaysincreasing in size. We can also leverage dataanalytics, machine learning, and artificialintelligence to exploit data by identifying patterns and providing insights into solving biggerproblems. What used to take hours and involvehuman intervention now takes minutes or seconds for a machine, freeing up humans’ time todo the more important work of disseminatinginformation and making decisions.Another trend is moving to the edge –processing at the point where the decision ismade. This minimizes latency, improves versatility, enhances reliability, eases scalability, andultimately increases value. This has an obviousimpact on the efficiency for any workforce. Myfavorite example of the edge is autonomousdriving where automobiles adjust based onreal-time information, making them safer andmore efficient. Please share the “OneIT” concept youhave developed at Qualcomm.OneIT celebrates both the individual piecesthat make up the information technology organization and the collective whole of the organization. As with any IT function, ours is madeup of individual capabilities, each an expertin their domain. The OneIT concept creates aAre you seeing more women enteringthe IT space in general? While I’ve seen an increase in womenentering the IT space during my career, statistics show that women in tech are stillunderrepresented. Even today, the percentageof women in tech is drastically lower than thepercentage of women in the workforce. Ona positive note, the proportion of women intech has grown slowly but steadily for the lastcouple of years. However, we have yet to fullyunderstand how the coronavirus pandemicaffects that trend. Some early studies havefound that women in tech have felt the pandemic’s impacts more than their counterparts.Looking beyond women in general, weshould be looking at representation of womenof color in technology as the statistics are evenmore grim. We need to be comparing our organizations to the national statistics, developingstrategies to outperform the averages, and continuously comparing ourselves to ourselves sowe’re increasingly mirroring the characteristicsof the broader population.Overall, leaders need to do a better job ofcreating an environment that welcomes, continuously develops, and supports the advancement of women in IT, and they need to morphthat environment as the world around uschanges.Do you have any predictions for whatthe future might hold for excellent CIOleaders?Information Technology has become a keydifferentiator for organizations as technologyevolution has introduced big data, artificialintelligence, machine learning, edge computing, and other trends. Businesses are seeking todo more, increasingly accurate, and faster work, and IT is a key enabler. In a short amount oftime, organizations that fail to embrace technology as one of their key pillars will struggleto deliver on their strategy and commitments. They will lose to the competition. The ITfunction is becoming more in demand whichrequires a seat at the table and alignment withthe rest of the business. As for excellent CIO leaders, there’s alwaysgoing be room for innovative, courageous, capable leaders – it’s always about the people!11/3/21 1:00 PM
